that doesn't get at what i think is really responsible for the revival of the session musician - technology has made it so common now for one person to make the record on their own, then need to hire a band to play live. bon iver, neon indian, glasser, zola jesus, etc etc. and those are hired 'rhythm section' players, not just horns & strings like that article focuses on.
