Pop-Eye - Hear'Say! Um......ah.....Chocolate Puma! Alisha's Attic! And WHAT THE HELL ARE THE GORILLAZ DOING WITH 44% OF LAST WEEK'S VOTE?

Tom, Wednesday, 21 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, I *expected* the Gorillaz. I did not expect that Alisha's Attic would be around to plague my life. I nominate their version of Suede's "Still Life" as one of the worst things the nineties vomited up.

The Hear'say single is awful. The Gorrilaz single is far worse, however, if only for Albarn's smug belief in his own coolness which has been so evident in recent interviews. Can the man not just go away?

but, but, erm, i, erm, quite like the gorillaz record, the fast versh anyway. its got a good beat etc...

carsmilesteve, Wednesday, 21 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Quiet in the back there.

The Hear'say single is great and I'll fight to the death any man who says otherwise. I never really liked "Never Ever" with its appalling faux sincere talkie bit - and while the harmonies are a bit ubiquitous in Pure And Simple - its a much more fun song. And its even better when they do it "live" as the harmonies are stripped down and we have - for better or worse - five people who were picked with one of the criteria they could sing.

I know your argument about seeing everything up front will remove the interest from the band two three singles down the line but this doesn't wash with me. We know these people a lot more, we have been presented with their personalities - which is something we have never got from Westlife (or pre-packed personalities with regards to Steps). S Club 7 - with their various TV series - were equally visible in a scripted way, which does not make what they will do next any less interesting. The past is boring - and Hear'say will be tabloid fodder for a while yet.

I think the great (not) idea for Popstars actually came from New Zealand originally but we claim everything successful from NZ as our own so that counts. Still, if you think Hearsay are bad, take a listen to Bardot's "Poison" (Australian Popstars first song) and get it in perspective. "Pure And Simple" is pretty harmless and probably deserved to be Number 1 given how crap the competition. It's nowhere near as bad as Gorillaz. Or Rod Stewart. Or Alisha's Attic.

I heard this listening to the UK Top Forty Countdown last week (ie 128.3.01). BBC DJ goes live to Hear'Say, holed up wherever. Instant background: shrieking and mike-breakup. I'm cooking, so not listening 100%, and thus assumed the following was said by bolshy JoanJett-alike Kym, but in fact it was said by junior bolshy muso Myleene (I checked by watching popstars the following evening - Kym was crying, the big girly girl). I like this speech: it's an all-purpose declaration of war on uselessness. "The lid has literally been lifted off the music business, It gives everyone a chance. Anyone out there trying to fake it - anyone who doesn't deserve it, they're quaking in their boots. Cos we're coming to get you!"

four months pass...
Hey, U lot can just shut up about Alisha's Attic! They're a hell of a lot better than most of the shite that U see in the charts now! I don't give a monkeys what sort of music you're into, I'm not some mad arsehole or something, but I think you'll find that Aa actually have skill and talent. They don't mime to their songs, they write their own stuff and don't have this stupid attitude that loads of 'artists' have now, such as Damon Albarn, those sluts out of Attomic Kitten, etc... There, I've said my piece. I'm off.

hey!! look!! my famous original rant abt hear'say, soon to be transformed into the Gibberish that Ate Glenn MacDonald (ie *my* gibberish, Glenn: I'm teasing me, not you, this time).

Doesn't my name look funny all written out in full?

mark s, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry Mark, you've been upstaged by the Alisha'a Attic fan. The last one left in the wild.

DG, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't acertain as to whether I should take offence at that last comment, or be chuffed at it... so I'll just take it with humourous indifference.^_^

Did I miss Hear'Say's second single or something?

Andrew L, Saturday, 11 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You may well have done: it was very missable.

If anyone's interested, pop-eye will be back as part of the NYLPM revamp.
