Boards of Canada Oscar See Through Red Eye can be listened to on Bleep.

I did, I was wondering what you guys thought of it..?

I was a shade disappointed. They seem to have lost their mystique, their simplictiy and basically what makes them BoC. (In that track at least)

The guitar isn't really welcome. The percussion is interesting, but not Boards enough. It sounds too modern. Too produced. Rarr.

I listened to it several times this morning and came away feeling rather "ho hum" about it.

There have been many reports of fake BOC albums and songs leaking over the course of the past couple weeks, and honestly if someone had played this for me without knowing that it was bonified, I probably would have thought it was a fake as well. It just doesn't doesn't have the "grab" that a lot of their past work does, instead sounding like 5-10 elements pulled from past songs and pushed together into a 5 minute nebulous blob of sound.

Of course, I'm still interested in hearing the full length when it arrives, but if it's more of the same, I'm afraid they'll have officially jumped the shark in my mind.

Yeah, that's EXACTLY the way I feel. ://

I'm still trying to figure out when Boards Of Canada became Koreshesque cult leaders as opposed to musicians.

Whenever Beautiful Place... came out.

Anyway, they just put that shit in to add mystery. There's nothing to say they actually are koresh supporters :)

I thought "Oscar" was quite good. If I'm not ultimately that excited about it, it's because I think it sounds too much like their past work.

I think it sounds great and still very BoC. I know I'm basing this on some crappy stream but the mix seems super crisp sounding and all the elements stand out front unlike in their previous music. It sounds very ProTools, unlike their past stuff, which sounds mixed-to-tape (cassette, even) to these ears.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

The mixed to tape thing was completely on purpose dude.. I think the new production just totally destorys the BoC feel. And as for the elements standing out, it seems like a mess of ideas trying to be different but typical BoC. Typical melodies, just without the impact. It sounds more like pleasant advert music than mind bending IDM. I'm disappointed with this track.

this sounds pretty great to me

(x post) Seems your disappointment here has more to do with BoC not sticking to what they were doing - what - 5 to 7 years ago? That's how I felt when "Geogaddi" was released: "This is a tired attempt at recapturing MHTRTC, with rougher, murkier textures. They've lost me." Then I listened to it again a while later and was knocked out. I barely listen to MHTRTC anymore. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the new album.

Oh, and don't get me wrong. I LOVE things mixed to tape - I often still mix to cassette myself - and generally can't stand that everything's-seperate-yet-in-your-face shiny ProTools sound. But it seems to work nicely on this new BoC track, if that's what they did.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

I started from the beginning too though mate; when Geogaddi was released I definitely didn't feel the way I do now.

Obviously, this is one track and I've heard it a limited amount of times and I'm not subscribing myself to a concrete judgement. That's just my first impressions. My first impressions of Geogaddi were of equal pleasure - I welcomed the murkier rougher textures. They'd changed in a decent way. I'm not asking for another MHTRTC - impossible and retroactive. If anything I'd like to see them go darker.

doublepost as well :> - about the ProTools slash Cleaner sound, I think it should be reserved for their Remixes for like Boom Bip etc. God I don't know. I need to hear the whole album I guess :)
