Lavender Diamond-- The Cavalry of Light EP

Pardon this bit of self-promotion... Lavender Diamond (4-piece feat. myself, Becky Stark, Ron Rege Jr. and Steve Gregoropoulos) released a small EP (4 songs) by ourselves and would like to give people the opportunity to hear it, even though we haven't really distributed it at all other than selling to Aquarius and Amoeba and at shows.

I guess you could call the music something like "epic anthemic folksongs" but sometimes it verges near "AM Gold". Think the Carpenters filtered through Crazy Horse by way of Linda Perhacs.

A few songs are on our website, lavenderdiamond.com, and if you'd like me to send you one we can arrange that via email.

I also think you've got some sorta twenties thing going, J. -- though perhaps I was mostly thinking of this due to Becky's dress sense.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

There's a bit of that, too, definitely.

one month passes...
Just discovered this tonight -- love the songs. I'm kind of fascinated with how music coming out of L.A. (you guys, Jesca Hoop, Ditty Bops, Eleni Mandell, even Fiona Apple) is kind of a sister to recent music from San Francisco (Devendra, Joanna Newsom, Jolie Holland) -- kind of non-rock, but whereas SF acts have some grounding in primitive/medieval styles, the L.A. bands have more of a lost-movieland bent to their style.

Eazy (Eazy), Sunday, 16 October 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

Well, now I have some new names to investigate -- though Fiona I'll just whistle idly about. And the EP is quite good! I forgot to comment on it earlier...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 October 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

hi, j. rosenberg. will have to hear this. hope la is treating you all right.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 16 October 2005 05:44 (twenty years ago)

Eleni I can vouch for through and through... actually she and Steve from LD and Nigel from Blondie have a new band called "The Grabs" who are like Patti Smith fronting Television!

I'll work on getting you guys some CDs when we get our next pressing at the end of this week.
Jeff

I heard "You Broke My Heart" on the radio over the weekend, and had to go out and get the EP. I encourage folks to check that song out on the website -- it's really something.

I always like the fact it's in the big displays near the cash registers for Amoeba. New EP please.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 17:12 (twenty years ago)

as wonderful as becky's voice is on the recording, it's about 100x better live. i was completely unprepared for how stunning she is.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 17:21 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I have to say I'm quite glad I saw them live first -- wonderful way to get introduced to them. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 17:35 (twenty years ago)

There's a split 7" out now on Cold Sweat w/a Devendra Banhart/Little Wings project called "Queens of Sheeba"... more Rege artwork... it's a nice little 7"...

I'm very late to the discussion on this, but I loved The Cavalry of Light EP. "You Broke My Heart" is infectious, but I think "Please" and "In Heaven There is No Heat" may be even better.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 12 June 2006 01:30 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I like "Please" better.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 12 June 2006 01:45 (nineteen years ago)

I like WACO/Wild Stares better.

Jack Cole (jackcole), Monday, 12 June 2006 06:00 (nineteen years ago)

I hope I get to see them in Los Angeles this summer.

I'm about halfway through the new LP right now, and I'm really impressed. Great sense of warmth, space and arrangement, clever lyrics and her gorgeous voice...can't wait to see em live in SF. New track up here

They have absolutely stolen the show for every single gig they have been the opening act at over the last 2 years. Can't wait for the album.

Ben Boyerrr, Sunday, 25 February 2007 08:51 (eighteen years ago)

wait, is that....Ben Boyer?

dan selzer, Sunday, 25 February 2007 08:59 (eighteen years ago)

Indeed, Señor Selzer! I've been on here for ages but just went back to using my real(ish) name due to the New Cruelty Policy on 2nd Wave ilx re: monikers. I'll drop you a note off-thread so I don't derail the Lavender Diamond thread any further!

Ben Boyerrr, Sunday, 25 February 2007 23:52 (eighteen years ago)

I saw this group open for the Decemberists at the 9:30 Club in D.C. a few months ago. They were fun to listen to and a good opening act.

Nathan, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:02 (eighteen years ago)

this albums pretty great so far on first listen, reminds me at certain points of Opals "Early Recordings", which is always a GOOD THING

zappi, Monday, 26 February 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

I play "You Broke My Heart" on my radio show a lot. It's a great song. I'll be sad when it's out of rotation, but I'll still keep playing it anyway.

Total knockout on the recent mini tour of in-store appearances. Looking forward to their whole show on upcoming tour.

Tim Ellison, Sunday, 13 May 2007 22:32 (eighteen years ago)

wow. I didn't know they posted here. I am waiting for the date in June, is it?

youn, Sunday, 13 May 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

So is the album any cop?

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 08:56 (eighteen years ago)

Sounded great when they were playing it in the record store. And most of their set was songs from it.

Tim Ellison, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

it's beautiful, Marcello.

CharlieNo4, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

I missed them @ Amoeba last Friday! They're always great live.
re: cavalry 'in heaven there is no heat' is one of the best tracks ever made.

tremendoid, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

This album is something special.

I looked at the CD booklet, thinking: do they really mean all this or is this just a big wind-up?

Then I listened to the CD and realised that they did.

Becky Stark's voice is phenomenal.

I suppose you could say it's the Sundays meets Mazzy Star but each track goes off in a completely unexpected direction (musically) that they always wrongfoot expectations.

The songs are wonderful...so simple but so profound...for private reasons the words mean a lot to me at the moment.

This is a great, great record. Go out and buy it now, every one of you.
