don't be jerk, this is china (FE7), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

animal collective with vashti bunyan - prospect hummer

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

"Oh Shit" by the Transit Kings and I might just have to say "Gold Digger" by Kanye West (I cannot get the hook out of my head). I'd say "Helena" by My Chemical Skeleton-in-Closet, but that was actually released in 2004.

There's been a slew of re-mastered and re-released stuff this year (from the Stooges to the Virgin Prunes to my beloved Killing Joke), but I gather this question is asking for strictly new stuff.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Mine's probably still "Hate It Or Love It".

I Ain't No Addict, Whoever Heard of a Junkie as Old as Me? (noodle vague), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

Half Man Half Biscuit- We Built This Village On A Trad Arr Tune

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

hard to pick just one

probably white rose movement-love is a number (black strobe mix) but I do have a real soft spot for the reverso 68 mix of "tito's way" by the juan maclean.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

Of Montreal "The Party's Crashing Us"

OR...

The Mars Volta "L'Via L'Viaquez"

billstevejim (billstevejim), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

I can't do one. Here are five:
1) Heartless Bastards - "New Resolution"
2) Kanye West - "Touch The Sky"
3) T-Weapons f/Pitbull and Notch - "Mira Mira"
4) R. Kelly f/Snoop Dogg - "Happy Summertime"
5) Josh Rouse - "It's The Nighttime"

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

white rose movement!

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure most people are sick to death of hearing about this song, but it's still "Since U Been Gone" for me. Hasn't gotten old yet after 5,000,000 plays (articles about indie crossover appeal notwithstanding)

Legroom at the Vista (Bent Over at the Arclight), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

Possibly "Easy to Be Around" - Diane Cluck
Serenesque yet pensive-ish.

mox twelve (Mox twleve), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

I'd say "Helena" by My Chemical Skeleton-in-Closet, but that was actually released in 2004.

Yay. Treating this as a 2005 single, right now my favourite track would probably be either this or The Foo Fighters' "Best of You". This will probably change as I pick up more and listen more to some more releases, especially as I get more into some of the more 'challenging' ones. There seems to be some good stuff on the Four Tet album but I still have a lot of catching up to do.

Sundar (sundar), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

(And there's probably even better stuff on Otomo Yoshihide's Guitar Solo. But these really are the songs that stand out most in my head at the moment.)

Sundar (sundar), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

Sleater-Kinney - Jumpers

Ben Dot (1977), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

[i]I'm sure most people are sick to death of hearing about this song, but it's still "Since U Been Gone" for me. Hasn't gotten old yet after 5,000,000 plays (articles about indie crossover appeal notwithstanding)

snowballing (snowballing), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 07:11 (twenty years ago)

I think the thread title specified "track," i.e. singular, i.e. one track only.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 07:12 (twenty years ago)

Ah thanks Marcello, I didn't understand it.

snowballing (snowballing), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 07:15 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I can pick just one without feeling impossibly guilty, so shall show a flagrant disregard for the titular request and choose a handful of current favourites.

Bloc Party - "So Here We Are"
Guillemots - "Made-Up Love Song #43"
Embrace - "Feels Like Glue"
British Sea Power - "North Hanging Rock"
Patrick Wolf - "The Libertine"

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 07:19 (twenty years ago)

Showing a flagrant disregard for the titular request IS HOW NAZI GERMANY STARTED

(hang on a minute, though, isn't that how Nazi Germany finished?)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 08:26 (twenty years ago)

There is no difference between "favourite" and "best"!

Broken Social Scene - Windsurfing Nation
Sufjan Stevens - Casimir Pulaski Day
Super Furry Animals - Cabin Fever!
Elbow - Great Expectations

Simon H. (Simon H.), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

It's not the same thing "Favourite" and "best" sometimes someone likes a piece of crap which isn't that great but What The Hell??? There are some tunes that might be baaaad but have some groove or a great chorus or maybe just remind you of a particular place or moment.

elgolfo (elgolfo), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

Beta (abeta), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

In the UK yes, but it had its first domestic release this year.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Ian Riese-Moraine: Let this bastard out, and you'll get whiplash! (Eastern Mantr, Wednesday, 7 September 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

white rose movement!

I was disappointed to find that they were a band, and not a movement advocating devolution and independence for Yorkshire

Ben Dot (1977), Thursday, 8 September 2005 01:03 (twenty years ago)

The version of the Mars Volta's "L'Via L'Viaquez" that they play on MTVU is different from the 12.5 minute thing I just listened to, right? Because the MTV version sounded great on the occasions that I heard it, like both the tightest and the catchiest thing I've heard by them. Probably still not my #1 track of the year but I liked it so much that I like "The Widow" now.

Sundar (sundar), Thursday, 8 September 2005 04:34 (twenty years ago)

devendra covering "fistful of love"

someone needs to hand this man a rock album. he's got the voice for it.

recent contender: "gone," kanye

fancybill (ozewayo), Thursday, 8 September 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Saturday, 10 September 2005 08:38 (twenty years ago)

"D.E.A.D.R.A.M.O.N.E.S" by Modern Life Is War. Best hardcore song in years.

"Publish My Love" from the coming Rogue Wave album is also one of the best songs I've heard this year.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Saturday, 8 October 2005 06:39 (twenty years ago)

is Ron Artes from this year? If so, that. If not it's that PSC song with T.I. but only cuz the hottness of that one dark-skinned girl in the video cannot go unremarked upon. Nothing else really jumps out at me. That MIA/Mylo thing would be tops if it wasn't so long winded, and yeah I know it's 3 minutes. Di di di indeed
