The boobs! They're hypnotic!

Bombed Out and Depleted / Kate (papa november), Thursday, 8 September 2005 00:29 (nineteen years ago)

Pretty much true, yeah. "Mushaboom" is a fucking fantastic tune, though.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 8 September 2005 00:31 (nineteen years ago)

I thought Nellie Mckay was the hipster Norah Jones.

Cat Power is just the hipster Feist.

holy beeturds, who is that in the bouncy image?

mike h. (mike h.), Thursday, 8 September 2005 00:49 (nineteen years ago)

Charlotte Church

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 8 September 2005 00:52 (nineteen years ago)

Got the Feist two weeks ago and will be returning it promptly. Very bland and I don't see any futher layers being revealed. Sure she's got a great voice, but this one ranks right up there with that Mai Doi Todd album from earlier this year as beautiful voices used to boring effect. Disappointing.

matt2 (matt2), Thursday, 8 September 2005 02:27 (nineteen years ago)

"further layer"

matt2 (matt2), Thursday, 8 September 2005 02:28 (nineteen years ago)

or "further layers"

matt2 (matt2), Thursday, 8 September 2005 02:28 (nineteen years ago)

I kinda came around to the Mia Doi Todd album, reggae song and all. You just have to place it very firmly in this sunny California-dreamin' '70s context and not let it out.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Thursday, 8 September 2005 03:04 (nineteen years ago)

I actually like this album, and thought I would HATE it...I think the production/arrangement ideas are both MOR and unsettling/odd in a good/subtle (many would say undetectable) way, with a good use of space, etc. The only thing I own that I was similarly smitten with at first listen in the way in which mild fuckedupness trumped loungejazz bistro decadance orthodoxy (though this IS just that, granted) was Herbert's "Bodily Functions" ("Let It Die", to my ears, = "Bodily Functions" - "Silver Apples of the Moon" by Laika). I also think the covers are all really well done, and blend in nicely with her own tunes.

Craig D., Thursday, 8 September 2005 03:18 (nineteen years ago)

I remember saying the same thing several months ago - I wonder if I started a meme?

Anyway, there's nothing for me to love or hate about her (though that animated gif is quite hypnotic). But then there's nothing really for me to love or hate about Norah Jones. Pretty, pleasant, inoffensive music that doesn't do much for me other than make me feel mildly drugged.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 8 September 2005 03:22 (nineteen years ago)

Charlotte Church got some big ass titties.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 8 September 2005 03:29 (nineteen years ago)

I've liked what little I've heard of the Hanne Hukkelberg record on Leaf, speaking of this sort of thing. The "noise YSI" thread is getting pretty hot 'n' heavy, btw... Now lift, and separate.

Craig D., Thursday, 8 September 2005 03:36 (nineteen years ago)

Charlotte Church got some big ass titties.

Put em on the glass chandelier, milo.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 8 September 2005 04:19 (nineteen years ago)

Is that really Charlotte Church?

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 8 September 2005 04:36 (nineteen years ago)

feist sounds like the bee gees!

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Thursday, 8 September 2005 05:30 (nineteen years ago)

what does that make hanne hukkelberg?

jermaine (jnoble), Thursday, 8 September 2005 06:35 (nineteen years ago)

Feist is more like a hipster Madeleine Peyroux.

save the robot (save the robot), Thursday, 8 September 2005 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

Hipsters are just a feisty Norah Jones.

disco violence (disco violence), Thursday, 8 September 2005 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

Damn, when did Charlotte Church become such a sex bomb?

wow!, Thursday, 8 September 2005 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

Craig D. OTM bringing up Hanne Hukkelberg here.

That album is far better and far more inventive than Let It Die.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Thursday, 8 September 2005 15:42 (nineteen years ago)

feist sounds like the bee gees!

Well, she covers the Bee Gees.

I think she sounds like Sade sometimes, but I think Sade has a great voice.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 8 September 2005 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

I keep coming back to this thread to see the boobs animation. I hate you, Dom :(

mike h. (mike h.), Thursday, 8 September 2005 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

Norah Jones' "Sunrise" is an awesome song.
Feist's "One Evening" is a beautiful Hall and Oatsey late night jam.
Mia Doi Todd's "Casa Nova" is a summer gem.
Madeleine Peyroux's cover of "Between the Bars" is haunting and sad.

I will now make a 3" CD mini-mix of those songs and use a still of Charlotte Church and her big ballingos as the cover art.

Legroom at the Vista (Bent Over at the Arclight), Thursday, 8 September 2005 20:27 (nineteen years ago)

2nd the "One Evening" love ... "Lonely Lonely" is the other standout with its unexpected shifts in pace.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Thursday, 8 September 2005 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

Those are my two favorites as well! I'm excited; I'm seeing her tonight.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 8 September 2005 21:05 (nineteen years ago)

I like Feist, but there is something a little "empty" about Let It Die. Her first CD Monarch is much better. Here are some things to take into consideration:

1) Usually looks like she's on drugs
2) Choked while performing her biggest hit solo at a Canadian awards ceremony
3) Toured with Peeches, performed as a sock puppet
4) Great vocals on Almost Crimes by Broken Social Scene
5) Dates Buck 65

Whether these factors work for or against her are in the eye of the beholder I suppose...

Feist doesn't date Buck 65. She may have at one time, but not anymore.
He's engaged.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 9 September 2005 15:19 (nineteen years ago)

Actively disliked the album for about six months - especially "Mushaboom", but excepting the Bee Gees cover - and mainly for its Hipster Norah Jones quality at that - but came round to all it all of a sudden. Maybe Gonzales is a key redeeming factor...

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 9 September 2005 22:18 (nineteen years ago)

TRUE. Saw her and was bored off my ass. Annoyed by the crowd because none of them come out to see local bands. Annoyed by Feist berating the crowd for not dancing and not moving closer to the stage.

oh, heck as long as we're here:
I don't really hear a Norah Jones influence at all on Feist. Are we just using that as shorthand for "critically overrated" or something? Because I've never even started to understand this thread. I just click on it for the Church Jiggles.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 12 February 2006 00:30 (nineteen years ago)

i doubt there's any kind of direct influence. but they're both very musicianly pop vocalists with smoky, alto voices and a bit of a jazz streak.

also, i thought i would do sir tofu (who gave me all the feist i own) a favor by giving him a reason to return to the thread and see a bit more cc.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Sunday, 12 February 2006 00:41 (nineteen years ago)

If Joni Mitchell out out a debut record today she would be lumped in with Norah Jones too.

yeah her most recent album sounds as good as 'The Reminder' really.

blueski, Friday, 20 July 2007 23:49 (seventeen years ago)

the reminder is fucking fantastic. let it die is now a distant memory, it is like she was really just warming up. 'Intuition', '1 2 3 4', and 'My Moon My Man' have all filled my head for difficult cycles to work.

Feist is a prime example of where an excellent voice and lousy songwriting will get ya. Give me an off-pitch singer with great songs any day over this tripe.

libcrypt, Saturday, 21 July 2007 02:15 (seventeen years ago)

Deej, what Feist songs have you heard? I think you might like some of them, like the smoooooth songs on Let It Die.

jaymc, Saturday, 21 July 2007 02:20 (seventeen years ago)

The hipster Norah Jones, no.

She's the hipster Mungo Jerry. I mean seriously, "Mushaboom" is basically "In the Summertime" for the 21st century.

"Black Horse & Cherry Tree" was huge among the over-30 set. I'm not sure what's keeping the album on the charts.

The Reverend, Saturday, 21 July 2007 14:21 (seventeen years ago)

So whoever is producing those numbers is tracking EVERY COPY of the record sold? Cause there are prime numbers in there.

calstars, Saturday, 21 July 2007 14:37 (seventeen years ago)

i only know a few tracks off the latest really but ... feist has way better phrasing than jones. (see "honey, honey")... i generally give bonus points to just about anybody covering nina simone also. granted, not everything she's done is righteous so i can sort of see where haters might base their feeling.

There's that song "Brandy Alexander," which sounds like a sentimental 70s ballad.
