I can't find out anywhere who else is playing with her (as in "who's her DJ?", and "other artists on the bill?") on her tour which starts in a week or so. Does any of y'all know.

M.I.A. is explosive like a cool-ass car bomb!

Confounded (Confounded), Thursday, 8 September 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Did anyone see her on the Mercurys? It was the first time I'd ever seen her. I thought she was preposterous.

"Full of herself" was an expression that sprang to mind: she seemed to think she was the first immigrant to ever make a record. And her speech went on for far too long.

I was also curious to know just how long she'd really lived in that "mud hut" she kept going on about.

Robbie Baldock (bongoboy), Thursday, 8 September 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

"mud hut" is, in fact, a euphemism.

jb, Thursday, 8 September 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure what for, though.

Please stop the hateration! M.I.A. is explosive like a cool-ass car bomb!

Confounded (Confounded), Thursday, 8 September 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

So then...no one gonna help me out with the information I'm looking for, and post anti-MIA shit which probably should go onto the more appropriate (past) MIA threads.

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 8 September 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Can't wait for the next album.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 8 September 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

"Does she still dress like Blossom?" I hope so.

I would have to think it will still be Diplo, no?

Since the late 1980s, the group has conducted some 200 suicide bombings— far more than any other terrorist group. LTTE suicide bombers have attacked civilians on mass transit, at Buddhist shrines, and in office buildings. In October 1997, a suicide truck bomb killed 18 people at the 39-story World Trade Centre in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital.

Beyond suicide bombings, the LTTE have used conventional bombs against political and civilian targets and have gunned down both Sri Lankan officials and civilians. LTTE fighters wear cyanide capsules around their necks, so they can commit suicide if they are captured.

LTTE suicide attacks have targeted political leaders in Sri Lanka and India, including:

* the May 1991 assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi at a campaign rally in India;
* the May 1993 assassination of Sri Lankan President Ranasinghe Premadasa;
* the July 1999 assassination of a Sri Lankan member of parliament, Neelan Thiruchelvam, an ethnic Tamil involved in a government-sponsored peace initiative;
* a pair of December 1999 suicide bombings in Colombo that wounded Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga; and
* the June 2000 assassination of Sri Lankan Industry Minister C.V. Goonaratne.
* the September 2005 assassination of North American DJ and musician Wesley Pentz, professionally known as Diplo.

Legroom at the Vista (Bent Over at the Arclight), Thursday, 8 September 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

Wait, so the 80s are back? You mean young people are emulating the styles of 15-20 years ago?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 8 September 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

MIA's singsong cadence is both child-like and streetwise, perfectly mirroring the smiley-faced menace of the electro-informed palpitations behind her!

TAMILITARY, Thursday, 8 September 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

Has this tour started yet????

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

Yes.

SHE IS SO DYNAMITE LIKE A COOL ASS BOMB: http://www.miauk.com/

Confounded (Confounded), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

She played Miami, last Sun. Her dj is from Miami but I forget his name though it was in the papers here after Diplo quit. She apologized for regurgitating the same material over and over and promised to write some new songs.

The dj seemed quite humorless and they had a tense moment at one point on stage because he seemed to be trying to mess up the beats to trip her up. Maybe he was getting her back from handing him the microphone earlier to "say hello to his hometown" and putting him on the spot.

Re: her style...she just wore OP shorts and a t-shirt and looked very comfortable, no problems there.

Thea (Thea), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

What "opened" for her in Miami???

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

I think it was just one of the res dj's from I/O Lounge.

Thea (Thea), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

sounds dullish

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

twas, but stuck in Miami you take what you can get.

Thea (Thea), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

I think Diplo is opening some of the shows... cause he's headlining the Toronto after party: http://www.hollertronix.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3692

Quinn (quinn), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

which reminds me - Dear Sam Hunt of Windish,

if you read this can you and Tom git more bands down to Miami, it's humiliating when I see Acid Mothers Temple playing in Orlando and not here. you're doing better than most I see - ie Seu J, Prefuse, Kittin, etc.
gracias, muy amable, tchau

Thea (Thea), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)
