I just finally got Cartoon Land. Haven't listened to side two yet. I WANT to like the Twinkeyz more. They have more personality. But I don't know if they have the songs. I will have to listen to side two and find out - WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 8 September 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

what version of the vinyl? The original Plurex LP's pressing was all crappy. I like them both but lean towards Twinkeyz.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 9 September 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

No, the new one on Anopheles. I think the original album was called Alpha Jerk.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 9 September 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah, you're right.

I haven't listened to either in ages, I only have the original Simply Saucer CD on Cargo from way back, and the track on Homework, never heard the more recent expanded reissue.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 9 September 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

I have them both, but it wasn't money well spent - they're both overrated, and I think they are only perceived as interesting in light of the fact that they were doing something 'different' with a wee bit of prescience in otherwise dire times. Compare either to the early Pere Ubu stuff (for instance) and it's wildly apparent.

Dee Xtrovert (dee dee), Friday, 9 September 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

Simply Saucer are decent but not all that. The Twinkeyz are beauty incarnate. As for comparing to the Twinkeyz to Pere Ubu, two different things going on completely, each great but crawling down a different path.

Jean Baptiste Le Moyne (Grodd), Friday, 9 September 2005 01:00 (twenty years ago)

I wonder why they chose to leave "Little Joey" (which is on one of the early Homework comps) off of Cartoon Land. Is it too straight or something?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 9 September 2005 01:23 (twenty years ago)

I'd take either of these bands over Chrome or MX-80 Sound, fwiw.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 9 September 2005 01:50 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, I LOVE those mid-70s avant-garage Ubu/Debris/MX-80-type bands! All so precious, and a limited commodity since the indie-label thing was just in it's infancy then. And I could do some serious pondering trying to choose between Twinkeyz and Simply Saucer. (But I'm too lazy, so I'll just play the patriotism card and choose Saucer, since Canadian bands of that ilk were naturally even more scarce than the "regular" American specimens.

Really, tho, comparing those two bands is somewhat akin to comparing Hawkwind with Roxy Music - not a lot of common ground aside from both being "different", just like Dee said.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 9 September 2005 01:59 (twenty years ago)

OMG this Twinkeyz album rules.

I've spent my whole life proselytizing for "Aliens In Our Midst" as one of the 5 or 10 best singles EVER by anybody EVER. No question about it. search login 'diamond' keyword 'midst'

Simply Saucer: really sweet, but also somewhat overrated by the UG crew.

karl Ikola: possibly best taste, coolest reissues, of the last 10 years? I mean, he's only done a few of note ... BUT: TWINKEES, ... motherfucking DEBRIS!!! (I have a Debris original, thank you [bought the sucker SS too!]) , and that new one that Seward liked so much. whatever it's called, still need to get it..

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 9 September 2005 05:24 (twenty years ago)

Simply Saucer are awesome, you guys are crazy.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 9 September 2005 06:14 (twenty years ago)

They are pretty awesome.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 9 September 2005 06:30 (twenty years ago)

I didn't get that into the Debris CD.

Touch and Go's CD of Chrome's Half Machine Lip Moves w/ Alien Soundtracks takes the cake for me.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 9 September 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

I've changed my mind ... Simply Saucer!!

Stormy Davis, Sunday, 22 June 2008 07:41 (seventeen years ago)

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Sunday, 22 June 2008 09:26 (seventeen years ago)

eleven years pass...

Actually it might be the Twinkeyz

"Tonight Again" is so fucking good it's like a bunch of weird nerds playing the best faux-Rolling Stones song ever
