oooh - good question! as an import cd pricer/buyer, i used to totally get psyched for black saint spines, and also for soul note (italian blue note) spines, because the music was great 3/4 of the time, and they were always worth more than we had paid for them. we had BOXES AND BOXES of those soul note/black saint cds just languoring in huge boxes, unsorted for years. one summer, i just asked to be the one to organize the entire back room, and i just sorted thousands of OOP and awesome cds everyday for a couple months, listening to whatever struck my fancy.

agh. this thread makes me pine for my old job.

Impulse!. I only have a few Black Saint titles (two by Cecil Taylor, two by Andrew Cyrille), but I have literally dozens of Impulse! titles.

Damn, Phil, how many times am I gonna have to tell you to check out Henry Threadgill and Air and Muhal Richard Abrams, and there's even some pretty live David Murray stuff out there.

Impulse. Black Saint is a great label but I never liked the rainbow spines.
