they were both searching for a utopia that didn't really exist, and the way they went about it was interesting to say the least, but it didn't take minor threat fifty albums to take me to the moon. Points to the arkestra for inspired wardrobe choices though. points deducted from minor threat for making me buy a beefeater album.

what a split EP that would have been!

petesmith (plsmith), Friday, 9 September 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

You don't really exist.

Old School (sexyDancer), Friday, 9 September 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

But I'm right here! In fact, wherever I am, there I am!

Dischord band death match :

Beefeater or Rain Like The Sound Of Trains..

Who sucked the hardest..?

(The answer here is obviously Shudder To Think).

Ellis, Friday, 9 September 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

beefeaters house burning down is the old and new testament of rock

kpcollins (aimurchie), Sunday, 11 September 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

i wonder what minor threat would have turned out like if ian had dropped acid with hank back in the day.

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 11 September 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

pailhead?

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 11 September 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

or egg hunt, maybe.

ugh.

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 11 September 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

i always thought part of the appeal of minor threat was that they had a stick up their ass.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 11 September 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

I was going to say exactly the same thing except my chosen metaphor was "tightly clenched buttocks".

I Oppose All Rock and Roll (noodle vague), Sunday, 11 September 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

I actually saw Sun Ra open for Sonic Youth in Central Park.

That said, GIVE ME MINOR THREAT EVERY. DAMN. TIME.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 11 September 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

Y'all are guilty of being white. Sun Ra wins big time.

disco violence (disco violence), Sunday, 11 September 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

I judge based on the quality of hats, so definitely Sun Ra.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Sunday, 11 September 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

minor threat have the virtue of breaking up as opposed to flogging a dead horse

kpcollins (aimurchie), Sunday, 11 September 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

I read that as "breaking up a dead horse rather than flogging it".

I Oppose All Rock and Roll (noodle vague), Sunday, 11 September 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Obviously part of the point of jazz is vicious, unrelenting horse-flogging.

First of all, Shudder to Think fucking ruled. Secondly, Rain Like the Sound of Trains was never on Dischord. Thirdly, I am not qualified to participate in this T/S because I don't think I've ever heard Sun Ra. Where should I start?

Who Are You, Buster Gonad? (Bent Over at the Arclight), Sunday, 11 September 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Atlantis.

Sun Ra.

Bling Hampton, Sunday, 11 September 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

A matter of opinion about Shudder To Think but as for Rain Like The Sound Of Trains never being on Dischord :

http://www.southern.com/southern/label/DIS/complete.html

87.5 Rain Like the Sound of Trains Bad Man's Grave 7" (2125)

96.5 Rain Like the Sound of Trains s/t LP/CD (lp-1000, cd-2000)

Ellis, Sunday, 11 September 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

Sun Ra- A Friendly Galaxy. That's an OK place to start.
(Well, it's also the only album that I have loaded on my computer...)

js (honestengine), Sunday, 11 September 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

Dude, the .5s on the Dischord catalog #s means they just distributed the albums, which Dischord did for tons of smaller D.C. bands that they wanted to support but not necessarily sign. But I realize I am nitpicking about a mega-obscure band that was meant as a punchline!
