any thoughts on the new album? It is growing on me after a few listens, especially the second half of the album.

Listened to it a couple times, put it away for a while (thinking "ehhhh"), came back to it, and then realized after some more plays that it's my second favorite after Hong Kong.

'Hong Kong' is a classic, but once they lost the tin they lost the plot, imho.

one year passes...
Monolake has made some of my favorite electronic music.

They have some very intricate and yet subtle sound design. It impresses me that the music can be very propulsive, yet relaxing at the same time, fairly unique for this kind of music.

I think it is all top notch. I would perhaps consider the later music more interesting to me than Hong Kong, with the strange and haunting sounds they seem to be capturing from digital software.

I don't know how well or often people use their music in mixing situations, some of it doesn't seem as well suited to that need.

the basic channel cd rules - is that HongKong?

five years pass...

Dear person who sold Hong Kong to Penguin Music a year ago or so,

Thank you, although I pity either your financial state which brought you to sell such a good cd, or your lack of appreciation for it, You've brought a thoroughly lovely slice of brilliant ambient dub, and some of the best basic channel-style techno bangers to my life. And yes, I made sure to take the CD out of the metal case.

I haven't listened to the earlier albums, but I love love love Gravity and Cinemascope... Such deep layers of emotion in such minimal settings.

Incidentally, a moment ago I just saw an ad on Boomkat for "Hong Kong 2008 edition"

Hmmmn.

three years pass...

I haven't really been paying attention to Monolake in 10 years, but I grabbed the new album, and it's way darker than you'd expect from this guy. Quite impressive though:

Apparently this is the second part of trilogy, with Silence being the first part. I wonder if that one is worth getting?

not that i could really explain to you why

imagine being locked in a system of pipes for an hour

something like that

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Monday, 5 March 2012 22:53 (thirteen years ago)

Bleak, bleak, bleak.

Whenever I listen to this I tell myself this is what Ableton Live was invented for, this music.

Should I sell my copy of Hongkong (in the OG tin case)?

first of all, there's a track on there that's not on the reissue

but even if this is a step in gradually going to a digital music collection, what you need to do is snap the CD tightly onto the inner ring and put it on the shelf until it eventually cracks the CD into 5 or 6 pieces, then you will be a true chain reaction head like me.

Basic Channel's criminal long game is both deplorable and inspired. If these guys weren't busy pioneering dub-techno they could have done well at slowly destroying the environment / poisoning the next generation / gerrymandering electorates etc. etc.

Sorry Tuomas, I am American and therefore am a slave to the free market.
