scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 9 September 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

jack nicholson is silly. even during an emergency.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 9 September 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

has anyone don "walking on sunshine"?

Christopher Costello (CGC), Friday, 9 September 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 9 September 2005 23:32 (twenty years ago)

i saw randy

renegade bus (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 9 September 2005 23:32 (twenty years ago)

paul simon was sleepy.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 9 September 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

rod stewart did people get ready. it was great. he did that in the 80s I think. with jeff beck.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 9 September 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

Kanye did a mighty powerful "Jesus Walks."

Garth Brooks just butchered "Who'll Stop the Rain," making it 2 CCR covers so far, proving what standards Fogerty's songs have turned out to be...

PB, Friday, 9 September 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

Just an hour, eh? That was okay.

Kanye was great. It was good to see him on there.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Saturday, 10 September 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

Ha, what did Mary J do?

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 10 September 2005 00:03 (twenty years ago)

Eh, what she usually does....she's boring. The token "we need a 'soul' singer to make this song appeal to EVERYONE!!!" singer.

(By the way, way to end with a creepy monologue from Jack Nicholson, then segue into a ZANY "Hope and Faith" episode...)

PB, Saturday, 10 September 2005 00:05 (twenty years ago)

(She sang with an off-key Bono on "One")

PB, Saturday, 10 September 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

it didn't end that way though. with jack nicholson. it ended with dr. john at the piano. they cut him off at the last minute on cbs though for fashion rocks.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 10 September 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

Oh man. Any idea what he was playing?

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 10 September 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

Oh, yeah, you're right....

PB, Saturday, 10 September 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

he was singing something about going back to new orleans. so i will call it "Goin' Back To New Orleans".

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 10 September 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

He was playing "Walking to New Orleans" by Fats Domino. He totally changed the rhythm, it was beautiful. The original is an amazing, amazing song as well and should be listened to right away.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 10 September 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

It's time I'm walkin' to New Orleans
I'm walkin' to New Orleans
I'm going to need two pair of shoes
When I get through walkin' to you
When I get back to New Orleans

I've got my suitcase in my hand
Now, ain't that a shame
I'm leavin' here today
Yes, I'm goin' back home to stay
Yes, I'm walkin' to New Orleans

You used to be my honey
Till you spent all my money
No use for you to cry
I'll see you bye and bye
Cause I'm walkin' to New Orleans

I've got no time for talkin'
I've got to keep on walkin'
New Orleans is my home
That's the reason why I'm goin'
Yes, I'm walkin' to New Orleans
FADE:
I'm walkin' to New Orleans
I'm walkin' to New Orleans
I'm walkin' to New Orleans

Not that Fats rhymes "hand" with "shame".

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 10 September 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

that should read "Note that Fats rhymes..."

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 10 September 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

It was kinda poorly lit, no?

The Foo's were good. A bit muted, otherwise. On, and TAKE OFF THE FUCKING COWBOY HAT, BONO, YOU CLOWN!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 10 September 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

Is that Bridget Fonda and Dwight Yoakam? Is that the first time he's ever been seen without his hat?

k/l (Ken L), Saturday, 10 September 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

First time I've ever seen him without it.

Dan, Scott, what network were you watching? I'm on the West Coast and want to make sure I catch Dr. John.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Saturday, 10 September 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

And did Neil really do "Imagine"? I hate the word "inappropriate," but how . . . inappropriate.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Saturday, 10 September 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

Is that the first time he's ever been seen without his hat?

You didn't see "Sling Blade"?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 10 September 2005 01:12 (twenty years ago)

And did Neil really do "Imagine"?

No, he did some mawkish song about God.

Can we retire "Amazing Grace"?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 10 September 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

"Dan, Scott, what network were you watching?"

i was watching pbs and then i switched to cbs. maybe try pbs, they will probably show the whole thing. i was kinda bummed when they cut dr.john off at the end on cbs and it went directly to mark mcgrath from sugar ray high atop radio city music hall. he should have jumped off.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 10 September 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I somehow missed "Sling Blade."

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Saturday, 10 September 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

I saw but I can't remember if he took the hat off or not, although it seems that he must have.

k/l (Ken L), Saturday, 10 September 2005 01:35 (twenty years ago)

the randy newman was actually pretty fucking subversive right off the top.

anthony, Saturday, 10 September 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

Gris gris back to regular programming.

Cunga (Cunga), Saturday, 10 September 2005 03:00 (twenty years ago)

One of the guys from Rebirth Brass Band mentioned that they're going to be part of another benefit concert on CNN on the 20th.

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 10 September 2005 05:23 (twenty years ago)

how many times can "one" be repurposed, that is the question

hstencil (hstencil), Saturday, 10 September 2005 05:25 (twenty years ago)

Evidence of said telethon suggests Neil Young and Van Morrison are now essentially the same person. (But with different voices, I guess.)

M. V. (M.V.), Saturday, 10 September 2005 05:34 (twenty years ago)

neil didn't wear a purple jumpsuit, c'mon.

hstencil (hstencil), Saturday, 10 September 2005 06:01 (twenty years ago)

- And did Neil really do "Imagine"?

No, he did some mawkish song about God.

Can we retire "Amazing Grace"?

-- Alex in NYC -

Can we retire all songs about God? When is this country (USA) going to get past the idea that it is somehow God's favored nation? Aren't people EVERYWHERE God's children? So many here think America has a monopoly on God.

Davlo (Davlo), Saturday, 10 September 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

i don't remember randy newman singing this part of the song:

President Coolidge came down in a railroad train
With a little fat man with a note-pad in his hand
The President say, "Little fat man isn't it a shame what the river has
done
To this poor crackers land."

hstencil (hstencil), Saturday, 10 September 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

don't people in every country sing songs about god? plus, he is canadian. and canada is a GODLESS NATION! Unless you count Tim Horton.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 10 September 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

" don't people in every country sing songs about god?"

Usually the fundamentalist ones run by clerics. Is this really the way to go?

Davlo (Davlo), Saturday, 10 September 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

So you're in favor of banning songs. Very American of ya.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Saturday, 10 September 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

"Is this really the way to go?"

you have heard of the pilgrims, no? there is a long history of zealotry here. some would say it is the way things have always gone. the days of irreligious patricians deigning to rule here out of a sense of noblesse oblige are coming to an end. the Wasps are heading for the hills. but i would hardly call neil young a zealot. although i agree with you about the questioning god genre of pop song. it's pretty tired.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 10 September 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

Did Newman really not do the Coolidge verse? Seems unlike him to cut that, though at the same time he grew up in New Orleans and may have wanted to help even if it involved, y'know, pussin' out a little

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Sunday, 11 September 2005 07:47 (twenty years ago)

i didn't see the randy performance, dammit, but for whatever it's worth aaron neville did the coolidge verse at the first katrina telethon, on nbc (he changed the word "crackers" to "people," as has been discussed on a couple other threads, but otherwise did the whole verse, and the performance was damn near inspirational).

and some blues-rock type in nashville, i forget who, referenced the song in his performance on the mtv-vh1-cmt-a-thon lasst night, singing "six feet water on the streets of evangeline" and "they're trying to wash us away.

guess this is the official louisiana katrina anthem. which makes total sense.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Sunday, 11 September 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

bridget bridget bridget! i can't believe i missed neil. thought dixie chicks were pretty good.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Sunday, 11 September 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't Neil less questioning God and more criticizing zealots, hypocrits, etc.?

JC-L (JC-L), Sunday, 11 September 2005 22:40 (twenty years ago)

Pleasant Plains - I didn't realize I said I was in favor of banning songs. Thanks for clearing up what I didn't say.

Davlo (Davlo), Monday, 12 September 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

Got it. You don't want to ban them. You just don't want artists to sing about God anymore.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 12 September 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

I'm not saying I don't want artists to sing about God. Hell, let them sing all they want. Here's some topics to get them started;

Thousands of dead in Gulf Coast. Did they piss God off?

Thousands of dead babies every year from starvation. Bad babies, bad.

Priests rape children. God remains silent.

Iraq.

9/11

Rwanda

Hell, all of Africa, really.

Is God a racist?

Or does He just really hate Man?

Now I realize that these topics aren't popular, so we'll just get songs about how great God is to all of us (us being white, middle class Christian heterosexual males). God Bless the USA!

Davlo (Davlo), Monday, 12 September 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

oh read one Book of Job already.

Old School (sexyDancer), Monday, 12 September 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Davlo -- Randy Newman is on top of it. Don't worry.

A|ex P@reene (Pareene), Monday, 12 September 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

"Now I realize that these topics aren't popular, so we'll just get songs about how great God is to all of us"

Maybe you want to give the Neil Young song in question a good listen
