I know a NUGGETS III would be miles better than a NUGGETS IV. If somebody compiled a box of 90's garage acts, we'd probably be forced to deal with the cornball likes of Nashville Pussy, the Makers and the Oblivians. Plus all those Estrus-type bands who thought they were Billy Childish (barf bag, pleez!).

I looked into the Nuggets concept more after checking out those shows this weekend. I was surprised how open-ended it really was - Jac Holzman was mostly interested in compiling great songs from albums that in their mind only had one truly great song. Other ideas were floated - for example, Kaye more or less had a counterproposal of doing eight volumes with each one focusing on a different region of the country, but Holzman said to focus on doing just one double LP. Kaye also was skeptical it would come out, so even though he had the idea of picking garage rock songs, he didn't feel the need to be doctrinal about it so he threw in some "weirder" stuff simply because he liked them and thought they sounded good in the mix of tracks. A follow-up volume didn't work out because of licensing issues, but there were quite a few hits, BIG hits in fact, that Kaye selected for that (and I imagine they contributed to the licensing difficulties that prevented the compilation from happening).
Anyway, I guess it's the kind of project a lot of people already did at home whether they realize it or not. I have a series of compilations I made doing just that - gathering the one great track by said artist or album from a particular era (or in my case, from each decade). But there's definitely a magic and a coherence in taste (or "vision" even if the compilation process was very casual) that makes that first Nuggets volume very special. I don't even think the second volume has that - "Do You Believe in Magic?" is one of my very favorite songs about rock n' roll, but it for some reason it makes that second volume feel too calculated, like it could've been added by a marketing person because they wanted a really big universally-approved hit that would convince parents (of the time) to buy it for their kids or something.
If I ran with the original concept Holzman had, I think the '80s compilation I'd make would be really poppy simply because the acts involved would only have the one track that I'd like to hear again. ("Bette Davis Eyes"!) The picks above are far more interesting and feel like an extension of the music Kaye compiled together, but they're also bands that I'd like to explore much more beyond one song.

Some of the suggestions above are strange. Like Voivod and the Three O'clock are both fine, but how perverse to want to hear them on the same record?

Yeah it’s a great song. Something about the nonchalant vocal delivery sounds very modern compared to other songs from the era and closer to indie pop from the past decade.

Here’s another one which should have been a chart hit and it’s relatively unknown:
Cube - Concert Boy
