One of them makes overblown AOR/prog/disco displays of complete lack of restraint and taste, topped off with lyrics and singing that are often jarring and repellent, and the other hangs out in Chicago with post-rock guys. I luv 'em both!

I like that quality of Conn's records where all the retro touches are mixed up, so while it seems to be 'period' music it's always ambiguous WHICH period it's from, it's kind of Tralfamadorian. (I use this word a lot, I need a synonym). Same as Tom Waits, or Quentin Tarantino's films. I think QT is due for a re-revision anyway, now that everyone repeats the Penman line about "These films are fake, they don't have any life in them" - well duh, they're pictures projected on flat surfaces. They are NOT REAL. Ian Penman cites 'Taxi Driver' as a film with 'life' in it, even though it's equally schematic (not a bad thing), but glamorous NYC psycho veterans probably appeal to Ian's vicarious fantasy life than the 'video-store geek' does, probably because it's too close to reality in his case. Also, I thought it was ironic that he accused Zappa of a) Having contempt for his audience, and b) Not applying himself to anything, then went on to praise that hardworking showman Tricky!

Sorry, of course I meant "the 'video store geek' is closer to reality" etc.

It's Bobby, hands down. His complete lack of restraint and taste, topped off with lyrics and singing that are often jarring and repellent is far more enjoyable.

Is Bobby Conn better than Todd Rundgren?
