Who created the over-worn and ridulous fashion fad of wearing the collar of your shirts popped up?

Chelsea Schwaegerle, Saturday, 10 September 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

it comes from sailing. when you are sailing you wear polo shirts (duh) and you take them off to sun tan then quickly put them back on when it gets cold. but since you put it back on fast you forget to pull the collar down, then you see your reflection in the sea and you realize its a quite fetching look

Umm I think you can trace it at least as far back as men in the 1930s who were cold and/or getting rained on. And then through stiff Gilded Age fold-down collars. And then through Victorian high collars. And probably past that, but I'm not enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology, so I couldn't tell you. It's a three-century fad!

- Best popped collar in 20th century literary history: Saul Bellow's Seize the Day.

- Why the early-80s new-wave popped collar was so cool: Combined high-collar influences of 1950s prepdom with high-collar influences of 19th-century dandyism. Also cheaper and less overkill-looking than the post-punk neckerchief look.

- Query: Collarless shirt as bastard 1980s aesthetic cousin of the popped collar? Note to self: enroll at FIT.

- Why turned-up collars worked with 1950s dress shirts and blazers: Collars / lapels were very, very slim to begin with.

- Why cold men in 1930s/40s turned up collars: Scarves were for women, big over-the-suit coats were for rich people, and hats weren't actually doing so much to keep the wind off the arteries.

- See also: tuxedo/formal shirts.

I've seen a couple of these assholes recently and I want to say, "Wow, you actually think that little affectation looks more cool than ridiculously self-conscious? Nice pink shirt, too, by the way... ya fa-mummble mumbble..."

I turn it up to protect my neck or to look preppy and sporty.

Me and my film crew've been documenting the 2-polo layered popped collar in the wild like Crocodile Hunter. The Lacoste croc ate skittles and exploded (popped!) = mystery explained.
