What kind of Bass is this?

I went to a Garage Sale today and I bought this Bass for $3. I gave it to my brother for his birthday and we have no clue what it is.

It does work. One of the Tuning Machines are broke so we went to Guitar Center to find one. Turns out no one knew what make or model it was and the tuning machines were too big.

The technician said it's probably from the late '60s because it has 2 buttons to turn on the pickups instead of a switch.

Someone help me out.

Looks like a striped bass to me.

Hurting (Hurting), Sunday, 11 September 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

I plus i took off the Pickgaurd and the Neck and there wasn't any stamps or stickers.

Voodoo Child, Sunday, 11 September 2005 03:21 (twenty years ago)

It could just be some home-built piece. The headstock is really odd - especially the metal plate.

Hurting (Hurting), Sunday, 11 September 2005 03:21 (twenty years ago)

Is there any logo under the metal plate? If not, the world may never know. I like it though. The side markers on the neck are sort of reminiscent of something Hoshino (the Japanese parent company of Ibanez) used to do...other than that, I got nothing for you.

i dunno, but heres a six string version

After some totally pointless research, because I was bored, I'm pretty sure it's a 1965 Teisco Del Ray without the logo plate.

Looky here, and go to the bass ID page -

www.teiscotwangers.com

$3 was a pretty good price, I think. Nice job.

John Justen (johnjusten), Sunday, 11 September 2005 05:34 (twenty years ago)

(XfuckingPost!) might be a Teisco

amon (eman), Sunday, 11 September 2005 05:36 (twenty years ago)

NB-4, to be exact.

Let's try this again, shall we?

(flurry of xpost!) After a bit more digging, I'm sure it's a Teisco. Be back in a bit with price info if I can find it.

John Justen (johnjusten), Sunday, 11 September 2005 05:37 (twenty years ago)

damn they made some crazy ass guitars. 4 pickups!?

amon (eman), Sunday, 11 September 2005 05:39 (twenty years ago)

The selling price should make you happy.

I love Teiscos. Made out of pure, unadulterated crazy.

John Justen (johnjusten), Sunday, 11 September 2005 05:43 (twenty years ago)

Um, not to be a big geeky vintage guitar snob or anything, but never trust a "tech" from guitar center. I think you could probably go to a local shop that has a hankering for the old and odd, and try to repair the tuner. Whatever you do, don't modify the bass just to make something fit. Because when you do that, it makes the guitar-playing baby jesus cry.

John Justen (johnjusten), Sunday, 11 September 2005 05:48 (twenty years ago)

Oh Man, Thanks a lot guys. I knew it was something Japanese. The Guitar Tech. at Guitar Center said it looks like it's from Holland but that guy's a big dumb jerk. Don't go to Guitar Center in West Paterson, NJ. It sucks.

I'm going to go to Robbie's later and see if they have the parts.

Voodoo Child, Sunday, 11 September 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

He said it was from Holland? That's AWESOME. What a monkey.

John Justen (johnjusten), Sunday, 11 September 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Why Holland? That's a fucking cool look bass, btw. That head stock is outrageous.

ok, guys. i have a new challenge for you. if any of you can help me with the info on what type of tuners would fit on this bass (or where to find them) it would be awesome. i know it would make the guitar playing baby jesus cry, but i don't really care. i just need this thing to work.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Sunday, 26 February 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

Christopher Costello (CGC), Sunday, 26 February 2006 19:21 (nineteen years ago)
