Go On, rip me a new arsehole and disagree with me being (ILM word alert) snarky about Brandy and db Boulevard.

Pete, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The No Doubt single is ace, even unto the nonsensical words. I thought you'd decided you liked the Brandy single?

Tom, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Although their Top Of The Poops performance was half-crap, I think No Doubt is classick. Alizez gave me a flashback. Vanessa Paradis "enfer" all over again. YUCK.

helenfordsdale, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, I detest the No Doubt single with its "Chill Out - its Bounty Killer and No Doubt"...

Whenever the Brandy single comes on I do have to resist the urge to turn the radio off. After about a minute I can put up with it, and I quite like the chorus. But as I say, if I never heard it again it would be no great loss. I think it is ambitious, but it just doesn't work for me.

Pete, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What happened to the Hives crashing into the top 10? I thought they would have been a wee bit higher than 23.

Billy Dods, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's on the album though. Also the Hives LP gets big rack space in the megastores and the single was tucked away down the bottom of new releases.

Tom, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the Alizee single, but it's a weird flashback: about 10 years ago there used to be this French chart show on British radio and practically everything on it sounded exactly like "Moi ... Lolita". Specific to its country of origin in a way very little pop music is these days.

Robin Carmody, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Moi Lolita" makes my Austrian wife very happy indeed, as its sound takes her back to her 80s yoof. But the truth is, it's probably only a hit because Alizee = rrrROOWWWRRRrrr.

Colin Meeder, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sure, there's that line "chill out, it's Bounty Killer and No Doubt," but you have to realize how exciting it is to have a Jamaican artist crack the charts in America.

All you Brits are used to it...as a dancehall and ragga fan, all we get over here is Shaggy.

cybele, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

bah, that's mostly what we get, as far as the charts anyway.

michael, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Its what we call the "Its nice to be free" moment in the UK, when a poorly made single grasps for the ragga audience in a desperate attempt to make up sales. I'm sure ND have been big ragga fans for years, but this is pathetic.

What are you talking about vis a vis an album Tom?

Pete, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Hives question.

Tom, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i can sympathize with cybele but my heart lies with pete. it's cool and all that all my goony friends now know the name bounty killer (esp. funny to hear one of them breathlessly anounce "that new no doubt single is (awkward pause) dancehall! can you believe it? and it features beenie killer!" "bounty killer." "right, him!" but the single is atrocious. it's not even -really- dancehall. (lovers dancehall, maybe? har har.)

jess, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Enrique = after 514 years we finally have our revenge for the Armada! Ha! It's you the Brits deserve, frankly.

Mark Morris, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bah - that should be "all you Brits deserve", obviously.

Mark Morris, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pl. add my name to the list of No Doubt haters. Not because it is or isn't 'real' Dancehall but because it is a rubbish pop song. And yes, they were bluddy TERRIBLE on TOTP.

Andrew L, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Hey Baby" is one of the best songs of the year so far. Extremely hummable, extremely danceable, extremely FUN. I don't care if it's dancehall or not.

As an aside, the song they did with PRince is equally fabulous.

Dan Perry, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

everyone just needs to get off their high horse and admit they like that no doubt song cuz it's about butt sex. okay?

As an aside, the song they did with PRince is equally fabulous.

pardon me, while i choke on my cap'n crunch.

jess, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i like everything evah!

(is that off enough for you jess?)

mark s, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

thanks, ned.

actually mark, i'd be highly disappointed if you liked everything ever. but if you like that no doubt song then i have to retract my offer of sharing pirate gold.

jess, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The No Doubt record makes my teeth grind, but I know that this puts me at odds with Tom. That said though they played I'm Just A Girl on the radio this afternoon and that rocks.

Perhaps its the nasty sight of her face on the back cover of Q which bugs me too.

Pete, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry to be obsessive, but the No Doubt song does sound like they're using the "Plant It" riddim and it was, afterall, produced by Sly and Robbie...

Just had to, I'm sorry.

cybele, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No Doubt are a bit boring. There is not much to that song, did the Neptune's produce it?

AAF "Movies" is good. I don't think they deserve to be lumped together with the Nu-meatl crowd...they are a straight forward rock band.

What the hell went wrong with O-Town?...Number 38?...That big ballad type song they did was great.

Victoria Beckham take note, talking on records is a no-no.

db boulevard = bland and instantly forgettable. Nice video.

Brandy = R'n'b by numbers. Tedious.

Enrique = great chorous!

j>e>l, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

may be jumping the gun (for Pop Eye) but what'd yall think of Jamiroquai "Love Foolosophy" on Top Of The Pops? (BTW - we now have TOTP on BBC America!)

not much of a fan, but sounded kinda classic especially compared to everything else on the show (No Doubt, puh-leese). that bright guitar riff in the chorus adds a bit of edge to their sound - imagine (!) Jamiroquai goes 80's!!!

as for Enrique... Mommy makes it go away (alright, Kylie then)

Paul, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

makes it go away...?

even perv-ier than intended

Paul, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The No Doubt song is good because it doesn't sound real. Good ND songs ("Just A Girl", "Simple Kind Of Life", "Hey Baby") = the songs where the band are quite obviously trying on hats, doing something just once and not even pretending that they have any real commitment to the idea. Not-so-good ND songs = their "mean it, man" moments ("Don't Speak", "Ex-Girlfriend").

The Brandy song improves. The music hits you, and then you realise that the song's not so good, and then the music really hits you, and the song creeps up on you. At any rate it sets a new record for funkless R&B grooves.

Tim, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

James is right / wrong about the Ant Farm: they *are* a straightforward rock band, just an absolutely dreadful one.

I adore the DB Boulevard single unreservedly.

WHO IS BUYING RECORDS BY PUDDLE OF MUDD???

Robin Carmody, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree Puddle of Mudd are bad. Nickelback do a much more likeable impression of Soundgarden/alt rock.

Anyone seen the video for Alizae?

Oh, and the S-Club song is pretty poor, they can do much better. Rachael is getting married. And Paul now looks asthough he is receeding. Group body language on recent BP performance was not good. They need a break.

j>e>l, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Video for "Moi Lolita": Jailbait French girl comes home from disco, is yelled at by Maman in front of little sister for being a trollop. Much disco dancing. Ends with disturbing indications that little sister is also about to "grow up too soon".
