RFI: Sami / Joik Music

I have no idea if anyone can help me with this, but it's worth a try. I was watching Ray Mears' Bushcraft last night, and he was in Lapland, talking to a Sami woman who was singing joik (yoik?) folksongs.

She talked about how she was also making modern interpretations of this music with modern musicians. They played some of this over the end credits and it was amazing - fluid, echolallic almost Cocteau-Twins-like vocals over the top of epic Scandinavian rock.

But the one thing I didn't catch was the woman's *name*! Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Yes! Thank you! Yana Mangi is the one who was on the programme, but Mari Boine came up in google searches and I might try her as well.

btw, www.yanamangi.com has some samples but for some reason doesn't come up on google until a few pages in... weird.

If you find modern joik music interesting, you should try Wimme Saari too. He's released a lot of experimental/ambient joik music, both as a solo artist and with collaborators, such as Rinneradio (Rinneradio even has an LP called "Joik", where Saari is a full-time member of the group).

I don't know that much about joik music, but last spring I was DJing at a party for students of Sami language culture, and I found out that there's a whole spectrum of modern joik music, ranging from ambient to pop to metal. I played some metal CD they wanted to hear, and it was pretty much like your ordinary metal, except that the vocals were joiked.
