Next month is a "guide to" for his top ten albums.

Best comments get published also.

Now, who might? Hmmm?

Ah, apologies.

I used to pick up a stray MOJO every now and then for the free CD, but now I have a new magazine to ignore.

Not only are they doing a feature on that OCD blues fraud Beefhart, they're having the internet write the article for them..

OCD blues fraud: the lost shiny beast outtakes

Masked Gazza, Monday, 12 September 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

Seriously though, if you're offended by a creative person being or having OCD you better avoid all art made since, ooh, that nag in Altamira.

Masked Gazza, Monday, 12 September 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

With just 12 legitimately released studio albums to choose from, two of which are generally reviled by most Beefheart fans and have actually been disowned by Don, I would humbly suggest that the selection of Beefhear's Top Ten Albums really ought to be considered a forgeone conclusion.

OCD? I think you must be confusing Don with Frank.

Bipolar almost certainly; OCD, I rather think not.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 12 September 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

stewart - ranking them is the thing here, right?

from what ive heard, DATRS >= TMR >>>>> SAM. so im no real help.

petesmith (plsmith), Monday, 12 September 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Me personally.

The Beefheart list as a whole.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 12 September 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

The last time we discussed this.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 12 September 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

sorry you're right guys, OCD applies to his fans, not Don himself..

1337 dood3z (1337 dood3z), Monday, 12 September 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

yeah we've discussed this before. I as always go for "Decals." With "Doc" a close second. But most non-OCDs could live with "Clear Spot." it does seem odd to rank the top 10 with only a dozen to choose from. I put "Bluejeans and Moonbeams" as #10 for the hell of it.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Monday, 12 September 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

I assume the list will include the Ozit/Morpheus and the 'archival' and live stuff, which might help.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 06:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure I've done a Cap'n Beefheart Top 10 (or 12) here on numerous occasions so I'm sure Mojo can come along here and steal them if they want.

I assume the list will include the Ozit/Morpheus and the 'archival' and live stuff, which might help

Mostly rubbish tho?

Raymond Douglas Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 08:57 (twenty years ago)

Well you'd think so. I got "MerseyTrout" which was alright, but I don't need another one. The many 'compilations' of the Virgin and/or Liberty tracks seem pointless and opportunistic, as each album proper is very much a snapshot of its time. I'd discount the "Dust blows forward" compilation as it seems a fine and successful endeavour, but I dont own one.

I started this thread, mainly as it would be nice to have a decent and helpful two page guide to Beefheart in Mojo, rather than a thread after the event lambasting it.

Obviously, if you want a better guide, you should search the many and varied Beefheart threads here. (Who am I kidding, varied!)

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

Who am I kidding, varied!

Well at least there's a wide range of people who contribute to them... you, me, Stewart Osborne, Julio... errrrrrrrr... ummmmmmm

Raymond Douglas Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 09:07 (twenty years ago)

My ambition is to get Marissa onto a captain beefheart thread.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 09:09 (twenty years ago)

Hah - you read my mind... 'Emu' is kinda beefheart-esque

"OCD applies to his fans, not Don himself.."

I have written your name down very carefully and painstakingly under the appropriately labelled and headed section of my little black book, underlined it twice in red and attributed a score of 87.2357 (out of a potential 100) to indicate the precise extent of how dismayed I am by your comments.

In the fullness of time I shall also be sharing this information with the rest of Don's fans, several of whom may decide to publish this information on their blogs.

Don't say you weren't warned.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

But how do you represent the second album? What's the best mix of the Strictly Personal, Safe as Milk, and Mirror Man sessions/outtakes?

Maxwell von Bismarck (maxwell von bismarck), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps MM and SP might split the vote, pushing up Bluejeans. Ooh, this is exciting.

Maxwell von Bismarck (maxwell von bismarck), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

"I assume the list will include the Ozit/Morpheus and the 'archival' and live stuff, which might help"

"Mostly rubbish tho?"

The Grow Fins boxset is fantastic but really for completists only.

Bat Chain Puller is / was / should have been a great album - but since most of it was re-recorded and included on later albums it has ended up being far less essential than it would / should / could otherwise have been.

Merseytrout is good, but not as good as Rhino Handmade's I'm Going To Do What I Wanna Do - and in any case there are better live recordings about (e.g. Don's Birthday Party).

None of these should apear on any list ahead of any of the 10 key studio albums.

The Dust Blows Forward is the only comp that actually includes tracks from all of Don's oficicial releases and is thus probably the only one that's actually representative / worthwhile - although you'd still be better off buying SAM, TMR, Decals, Spotlight Kid, Clear Spot, Shiny Beast, or Doc instead.

I'd recommend anyone to buy either of the two Magic Band CD's, or the Fast 'N' Bulbous CD or actually pretty much anything else before shelling out for any of those other shoddily produced and cynically exploitive releases by the cowboys at Ozit/Morpheus.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

"What's the best mix of the Strictly Personal, Safe as Milk, and Mirror Man sessions/outtakes?"

Pwersonally I'd suggest you just get the Buddha reissues of Safe As Milk and The Miror Man Sessions, which between them (iirc) include alternative (and usually superior imo) versions of all the tracks that were included on Strictly Personal, prior to the application of Bob Krasnow's reviled "psychedelic Bromo-Seltzer" effects.

Of course this would result in something of a quandary regarding whether to include Unconditionally Guaranteed or Bluejeans & Moonbeams in place of Strictly Personal in any putative "Top Ten"....
