Anybody else catch this, and do a double-take? Brings a smile to my face everytime it pops up.

saw the commercial the other night. i was all "hey!"

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 12 September 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

bound to happen sooner or later, I guess. Beck and the White Stripes probably aren't far behind... those are the only big indie name holdouts I can think of.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 12 September 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

1337 dood3z (1337 dood3z), Monday, 12 September 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

cool. he has a kid now. there's bills. his parents paid 80 grand for him to go to UV. who knows what tuition at upper middle class universities will be when his kid(s) are of age

karl, Monday, 12 September 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

on the plus side, at least he didn't sell one of his GOOD songs.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 12 September 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

A song about a life of subsistence ice fishing and its preferability to slavery in an authoritarian former soviet satellite does, indeed, put me in the mood for reasonably-priced consumer electronics. I can't be alone in that.

I look forward to Chevy finally dropping Bob Seger in favor of "Heaven Is a Truck."

A|ex P@reene (Pareene), Monday, 12 September 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

Happily they didn't have another band re-record the song, ala Weezer's "Island In The Sun"'s appearance in a vacation resort spot some time back.

you're not! i'm gonna go buy a clock radio.

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 12 September 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

has the advertising world finally run out of uses for Such Great Heights?

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 12 September 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

OMG, I bought so many MandMs and I don't even like Iron and Wine

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Monday, 12 September 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

when is someone going to make an "indie rock commercials" compilation/DVD? Perhaps containing the "legendary" VW spot with Nick Drake! The "classic" "You Start Me Up" Windows ad with the Rolling Stones! The Gap ads with Luscious Jackson and, uh... that other guy!

Gawd I hate advertising.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 12 September 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

No, I don't believe I've had it in the ear before, but a cruise does sound nice.

A|ex P@reene (Pareene), Monday, 12 September 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

I really don't understand why people get so upset about ads. It's not that much different from a song being on the radio all of the time. All of these bands should take the money and the run, it's the only part of the record industry that can provide them some substantial easy money. As has been said, Malkmus has a kid now, and kids are expensive.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 12 September 2005 23:39 (twenty years ago)

It's also funny how the people who complain the most about tv ads are very often people who don't watch much tv.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 12 September 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

I know I know, I'm not begrudging him the extra dinero and I'm probably never gonna see this ad (I do watch TV but I dunno what constitutes "a lot" - I do watch more stuff that's rented/borrowed/bought than is broadcast). And its not just music in ads that I don't like, its ads in general, as a whole, as an industry. But its every artists' personal choice if, how, and when they decide to interact with that industry. Whether or not I like the results is another matter (I invariably do not).

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 12 September 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

GRIMEY SIMEY, Monday, 12 September 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)

It's definitely lost a lot of the stigma it had in the eighties, with "This Note's For You," etc. Madison Avenue is smart...they realized that having people like Robert Plant prance around with a bottle of coke was a peculiar sort of 80s fad, and was not going to work in the 1990s/grunge era.

But the real turning point, at least for indie rock, was Moby's Play.

the master of flop threads, Tuesday, 13 September 2005 00:04 (twenty years ago)

with the malkmus ad i kinda don't care because "phantasies" is so out-there anyway that only a real fun-hater (or media-savvy subsistence ice-fishing activist) could object to its use.

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

Could someone upload this commercial? "Phantasies" was always such a nice song.

enjoy bell woods (sjjd111), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

the new zealand labour party is using the clean in their current re-election campaign...

chris andrews (fraew), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

Haha. Wow.

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

its from getaway, i can't recall the name of the song, but the lyrics go 'the sun shining alll of the time..." its david singing, so i might actually be confusing it for a heavy eights track

chris andrews (fraew), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

All of these bands should take the money and the run, it's the only part of the record industry that can provide them some substantial easy money.

maybe if you're on a shitty label with a shitty deal and all your fans download your albums, but believe it or not malkmus gets paid royalties.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 04:57 (twenty years ago)

are his royalties substantial and easy?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 05:40 (twenty years ago)

i'd imagine they're just fine, esp. when you figure in pavement back catalog sales, songwriting royalties, etc., etc.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 06:07 (twenty years ago)

seriously I'm 100% certain sm's checks come regularly & are pretty big, not that I think the commerical use is a big deal - I think if it'd been "Silence Kit" (as if, but stranger things have happened) then my "fuckin' commercial is invading the margins of the text" problem that is generally viewed as corny or outdated, but whatever. "Phantasies" is a pleasant li'l song that won't suffer from a li'l commercial association

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 06:51 (twenty years ago)

I have nothing against indie rock or whatever being in mainstream adverts -- and I like that SM's gettin' paid for it -- I just found this instance surprising, in a pleasant way, in that I never thought I'd hear one of my favorite Malk songs on non-video television.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

As I used to be an ultra-big pavement fan, I can't believe I am so out of the loop that I did not know this but I am getting older and more disconnected but ...

Malkmus has a kid??

Matt Sab (Matt Sab), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

the kid's relatively new on the malkmus release list, dude.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

The kid was released on his website only, right?

A|ex P@reene (Pareene), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

fan club only

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)
