Has anyone seen the re-design of the NME's site?

It was pointed out to me earlier today. All I have to say is: Ouch. Painful. This must be a prank pulled by Paul Morley.

better than their old one, homey

richard wood johnson, Monday, 12 September 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

This much is true, although it now looks like some sort of "due to close after two issues to public indifference" webzine now.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 12 September 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

The old one was cramped, certainly, but the new one looks even more amateurish, and I think they upped the font sizes especially for their new readership.

Why don't they archive all their old reviews like rollingstone.com does? I still have never had the chance to read anything by Tony Parsons or Julie Burchill.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 12 September 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

No, but I had to laugh at the redesign of iVillage - http://www.ivillage.com

most slowest, pointless shit ever...

I used to dig Chopping Block (web designers), but they did iVillage and all the latest Phish / Trey Anastasio stuff and they have this consistent problem with slow, lame flash navigation.

HA!!!

NME looks like Pitchfork.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Monday, 12 September 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

Oh god that is awful.
Have they made it look so crap in hope that everyone will buy the NME instead of reading the website?

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

is the most reliable constant on ILM the fact that any new web re-design will be panned?

keith m (keithmcl), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 01:52 (twenty years ago)

it looks like Q Magazine.

http://www.q4music.com/nav?page=q4music

but despite that - tis a lot better than the orig.

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

It's a huge improvement. If I was Googling and came across an NME link in the past I'd never use it cos that old site was so horrible to use, but I can live with this. (Course, there still won't be any content I want to read but hey, it's a start).

I Oppose All Rock and Roll (noodle vague), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 07:52 (twenty years ago)

It seems okay. Logical enough if rather drab. Questionable content as ever though.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

bit boring but seems ok to me. whats the big fuss, NME haters?

ilx, Tuesday, 13 September 2005 09:30 (twenty years ago)

I don’t read their reviews, opinions or interviews either. But news is news and they seem to break quite a bit of it. So I do go to their site, about once a week just to see what is up, and any improvement is alright with me.

BeeOK (boo radley), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 10:17 (twenty years ago)

is NME still publishing? hm.

Mitch Mitchell (mitya), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

yes, still publishing:

This Week

http://www.nme.com/images/69_130905_blocparty_cover.jpg

this week, earlier than usual it's the yearly student Uni special:

Free NME Student Guide 2005 featuring the inside knowledge in over 50 uni towns. Featuring:

The best pubs, clubs, gigs and record shops
The Rakes’ guide to saving cash
10 Things to do before you graduate by Franz Ferdinand, The Bravery, Maximo Park and more
Win! £250 of clothes

http://www.nme.com/magazine

50 Uni towns ! in previous years they have only focused on about a dozen big/ key uni cities

PS: I was also going to mention about the Q site, the style top navigation bar is a complete rip off.

The music coverage of the website is still far too narrow.

Creatively the content of the website is poor:

- no forthcoming releases section
- reviews poorly indexed
- hardly any historical content / context of music
- no links section
- no cross promotion with Uncut
- no media guide
- the news page has a useless information design, also no RSS
- the search at the the top could include a kelkoo option [owned by yahoo] who also power the web search option. [Kelkoo search is available elsewhere on the NME website to compare some CDs]
- the web search option also doesn't work at the mo

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

The Student Guide used to be really funny - even in the late 90s - probably down to Johnny Cigs for the most part. I wonder what it's like now. Maybe I should steal a copy of NME and find out.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

Have a look at The Guide free with The Guardian every Saturday. It's pretty much The NME Student Guide of the '90s transposed (the erstwhile Mr Cigarettes included).

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

one of the first nmes i ever got had the student guide (1994). it was genius, but i can't imagine that i read it when i actually went to university. like OH< GOOD ADVICE, buy AN EMBRACE ALBUM, the chicks will DIG YOU, you say (sorry nick).

N_RQ (Enrique), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

re: 10 Things to do before you graduate by Franz Ferdinand, The Bravery, Maximo Park?

What could these be ?

Franz Ferdinand: dress like Orange Juice 20 years on.
The Bravery: sing 80s pop rock Karaoke looking like a twat.
Maximo Park: turn Warp into a guitar music label ?

anymore ideas?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

Manage Portsmouth FC.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

I think you'll find that Warp turned Warp into a guitar label. They weren't bought out by the Maximo millions.

snotty moore, Tuesday, 13 September 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

well, i gotta say that this site indeed runs much smoother than the old one. and the search function finally works, so i can find my old reviews with ease! yay!

ken taylrr has gone off the internet because of you (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

wait, i take that back. i can find the reviews, but i can't actually view em! fuck!

ken taylrr has gone off the internet because of you (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

Why is the news page on the website now so horrible? At least it was in chronological order before...

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

Yep- I'll second that. It follows the general tendency towards Smash Hits coverage of late (minimal reviews / limited critique- max hype).
