Sound of Los Angeles. i may have asked this before (but it didn't get many responses if i did)

Dynasty. Shalamar. Midnight Star and the rest. what are your faves? talk about Solar, baby...

gareth, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You know, I should research them further as an adult. The fave that comes to mind immediatly is "And The Beat Goes On". Wasn't Babyface a product of this camp?

it seems so unlikely that a thread about solar should receive so few answers, yet it appears to be the case. i have a feeling ilm will be more effusive and engaged this time around though

Holy shit, I've been listening to the Solar box set, and Dynasty is the best! How are they not a more recognizable name? in a box full of Whispers, Midnight Star, Klymaxx, Shalamar, etc., it's the Dynasty tracks I love the most!

I only have a few Solar 12"s but the ones I have are great. Guess I should look into the box set.

I always loved "Fantastic Voyage"

curmudgeon, Monday, 4 October 2010 17:10 (fifteen years ago)

"Second Time Around" by Shalamar is the one I never knew about until now for some stupid reason -- hell of a song.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 4 October 2010 17:16 (fifteen years ago)

Shalamar "Take That To the Bank"
Dynasty "I Don't Want to Be A Freak (But I Can't Help Myself)"
Shalamar "Right In The Socket"
The Whispers "And The Beat Goes On"

Shalamar "Make That Move"
The Whispers "I Can Make It Better"

My own Shalamar thread got modest initial traction then faded pretty quickly:

"Solar funk will make you jump, dance with you". Carrie Lucas gives a self-referential nod to her record label.
