So I was reading the thread "Has Bjork really sold 80 million records?" (I don't buy those numbers either) and click through a few links. Yes I'm board and can't sleep. Ultimately found a thread that was posted just today and has the top 100 best-selling artists of the Soundscan era, which means the U.S. only right? Copy and paste and here you go:

Here's the offical list of bestselling artists since Soundscan started in 1991 through last week.
Note it doesn't take collaborations or name changes (eg P Diddy and Snoop Dogg) into account

The list I received was a bit corrupt, so a few errors may have crept in.

What the fuck is Mannheim Steamroller?!!?!?!

Raymond Douglas Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

are there any international figures?

Marvin Gaye 11 million

If only I could jump into that Belgian documentary on Marvin Gaye living in Ostend. He's sitting in a pub. Some people ask him if he's a fisher. "No, I'm a singer." They ask him to sing a song to prove it.

nathalie's pocket revolution (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:34 (twenty years ago)

Can’t find international, as of yet, but did find a UK list:

These figures are taken from the end of year sales lists for albums and artists over the 18 year period 1987 to 2004.

There are a few gaps. The second figures are the maximum possible "missing" sales. In practice, the actual missing sales are likely to be far far less.

No artist sold more than 14 million in this 18 year period.

Sales figures pre-1987 are so far extremely patchy and we would need a lot more to extend the number of years covered by this list - but 18 years is a start!

An explanation of why you can't get an accurate count of worldwide sales. It's actually quite fascinating but a bit long.

Mannheim Steamroller is New Age Christmas music. Having heard it, I think it might be the result of an experiment to extract all humanity from a given musical composition.

There are artists on the UK list whose ranking seems like a posting from a parallel universe. Gloria Estefan! Deacon Blue! Big ups to Daniel O'Donnell, proving that a wax man in a comfortable sweater is more than a match for the Rolling Stones.

John Allison (John Allison), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

The amazing thing is that I'd bet Garth Broooks sold about 98% of those albums between 1991 and 1996. He was truly a phenomenon and then disappeared.

matt2 (matt2), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

46. 19,390 Tupac

no fucking way that's correct.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

Meaning too high or too low?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, that sounds right. Pac's stuff went platinum, but I don't think he ever sold more than 4 or 5 million per, did he? It sure is a white list for such a hip-hop era, but hip-hop hasn't kept people from buying their Beatles and Stones.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

Tupac's top sellers according to soundscan:

Asthmatic Cajun (Asthmatic Cajun), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

too low. he's around 24 mil last I checked.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

is soundscan info (aside from these aggregate type stats) available to non-industry people?

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

It's actually pretty strictly controlled; you have to pay a boodle to get access, although anyone who wants to pay can get it.

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

(In fact, message boards generally discourage posting Soundscan figures because it's bait for intellectual property lawyer-sharks.)

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

Points to ponder:

1. Pink Floyd's massive sales -- WHY? I mean, if you told someone that in the recent past, Pink Floyd has outsold U2, Backstreet Boys, Eminem, Britney Spears (!), wouldn't most mouths drop?

2. Looking at the top 11 (the first list), you'd think that country is the hugest market around (garth, strait, jackson, shania, mcgraw)... Put then, country disappears until 22 (reba), 27 (dixie chicks), so maybe it is just that when there is a country "smash", EVERY country fan buys it...

3. Dylan outsold Prince ? and Van Morrison outsold them both ?!

Matt Sab (Matt Sab), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

Pink Floyd's massive sales -- WHY? I mean, if you told someone that in the recent past, Pink Floyd has outsold U2, Backstreet Boys, Eminem, Britney Spears (!), wouldn't most mouths drop?

Fuck no. That's the classic rock market for you and there will always be disaffected 16 year olds getting 'deep, man.'

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

thanks eppy...i figured as much. some very cool things could be done with those numbers.

i always wondered why billboard never listed actual sales (even if they're just approximations).

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

xpost: not only do Pink Floyd have a constantly renewing fan base, they also have a long catalog of LPs.

Old School (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

I know Pink Floyd sells loads of product and I remember that billboard changed their 'catalog' criteria essentially to get some things in there beside Dark Side of the Moon (or something like that ...)

but I guess I didn't know they were Still that Huge.

As stated, I guess getting "deep" is forever...

Matt Sab (Matt Sab), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

As long as kids get high, there will be Dark Side of the Moon.

Plus you have to remember with them, the Beatles, Stones, etc., this era covers when a lot of people replaced old vinyl with CDs.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 15 September 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

you'd think that country is the hugest market around

I'd also think that country artists release albums with greater regularity than do artists in other genres. Alan Jackson never goes more than two years without a new album.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Thursday, 15 September 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

55. 17,939 Beastie Boys
56. 17,926 Michael Jackson

I know that the Beasties have several more albums and all, but jeez, that's a mindbender considering how Thriller is still considered the Biggest Blockbuster Record Ever by so many.

disco violence (disco violence), Thursday, 15 September 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

well, thriller probably did 80 or 90 percent of its sales before soundscan existed. michael jackson has been largely a nonentity on the u.s. record charts for most of the soundscan era.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 15 September 2005 03:24 (twenty years ago)

Smashing Pumpkins ahead of Springsteen - is that for real?! I had no idea they'd been anywhere near that huge.

Sundar (sundar), Thursday, 15 September 2005 03:35 (twenty years ago)

Garth *almost* disappeared after 1996. I'd swear it was him who gave me a big thumbs-up from across the hall at the Sunset Hiatt when I opened my door with Motorhead blasting a couple years ago.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 15 September 2005 04:21 (twenty years ago)

Also, heh, no wonder the Who started selling songs to every TV ad and series around.
