Whats the difference? How many members do they share? Are there 2 saxes in Polar Bear? I've seen Acoustic Ladyland play on Jools Holland and at a gig and subsequently bought the album "Last Chance Disco" but have only heard of Polar Bear through the Mercury nomination. Are they worth checking out?

OK so Polar Bear's new album is totally teabagging my balls. I love it.

The lack of attention these guys get on ILM saddens me.

Blog it! :P

Also now you know how I feel about all MY pet bands.

Haha; I would blog it, and will at some point, but I'm writing up Polar Bear's new one for DiS at the moment. I'm gonna write up THE BALLET we went to last night for the blog, though.

I only know one song ("It Snows Again") from some cover mount freebie CD, but I love it. Should I get the whole album? Is that song representative?

Savannah Smiles, Sunday, 17 August 2008 16:35 (seventeen years ago)

I don't recognise that song title; there was a 90s American indie band also called Polar Bear - the one I'm ranting and raving about is a straight-up jazz band, though.

Somehow I've avoided any knowledge of Rochford or Polar Bear until today. It took James Acaster talking about Held on the Tips of Fingers for me to start digging, and that album is crazy good (and not at all what I expected). It's really along the lines of Birth (fantastic sax/bass/drums trio who no one knows), Happy Apple, or some Tied + Tickled Trio stuff, all high up in my pantheon.

Listened to Rochford's newest ECM release too, spare piano & drums elegies, very different but really good.
