Compensation Question For Indie Musicians

This is aort of a silly question, but it's been one I wonder about and I've meant to make a thread on for some time and now that I actually have a few minutes to do so, here goes:

When guest musicians/friends appear on your records -- to sing, to play an instrument, etc. -- and it's not a co-writing situation, do you compensate them for that contribution, or just put their names in the liner notes and agree to guest on *their* records at a future time?

copies of the record, maybe a bit a cash, but usually it's done on the "honor" system.
