Douglas Wolk steps up with a tape he made in 1990. Thanks Douglas! Submissions for this feature always wanted!

Very entertaining piece. I wasn't really tuned into the underground scene during this period, so it was also educational. Nice work.

just so douglas doesnt feel ignored in the mad rush to decide if pop plunderphonia is the next big, uh, something...

this feature is turning out perhaps my favorite ft has ever run. i really hope it gets kept up. (btw tom, i trashed another possibly entry last nigth. that makes 3!) ;)

Oh, yeah, this is the stuff. Nothing more needs to be said (at least, not from this side of the bleachers).

The two frenzies can be combined if anyone wants me to make them a CD of bootlegs to write about - first come first servedXoR.

Tom, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

!!!!!!!!!! (Translation: Why, yes, I would love free music.)

Boom Selection is great, BTW. Not that it needs to be said, of course.

David Raposa, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It will be all the usual ones you've got off boom selection already heh. Actually the thought of Mr Indie doing the reviewing is a tasty one - it will settle the are-they-pop-or-indie debate once and for AWL!

I'd e-mail you my address, but I don't want to have it swallowed up in Netcom's E-Mail Server Sinkhole Of Bad Stuff.

Of course, if you send me Bootlegs, I should return the favor and send you some of "my" music to villify and eviscerate.

David Raposa, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dave - netcom is fine with not losing stuff, it's just the dial-up that's a problem at the moment (which isn't even netcom anyway). Use emergencytom@hotmail.com if you want though.

Excellent writing, Douglas - I only know a few of these songs, but you've encouraged me to try and find a few more*. (Can you really get all 38 on one tape? ;-) Let alone write this much about each one in the time it takes to play said tape! ;-) )

*I downloaded that Lush track today, together with a few more of their cover versions. In retrospect, this (doing covers) seems to have been their forte. (I have just spent 10 minutes trying to explain this statement, but need more time so I'll just hit submit now I think).

You could probably sum up that argument in three words: "Rupert the Bear."

I actually wouldn't say they were best at that, but there's something about the presentation of that band that makes them ideal candidates for it. Probably it's that they were actually very funny: I seem to recall an early-90s period of poring over their interviews and continually laughing myself silly. Shoegazers Who Don't Take Themselves At All Seriously Shocker.

"Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" as done by Lush = proof of god's potential existence.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jeff: it's a Maxell 100-minute tape (meaning something more like 102.5 minutes), and I type very quickly...

Douglas, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it also helps that douglas seemed to know this particular tape back to front, whereas all my old tapes seem to have vanished from the face of the earth which is whats making this project so hard for me. (which i guess is kinda the point...)

really really nice stuff--and having done this kind of thing (though without the time constraints of this particular feature) a lot, I'm def. humbled by it. (need to ask D in private about that interview I mentioned once)

Yeah, Michaelangelo, this feature is right out of your 'zine, the first issue of which I loved. Are you still putting that out?
