"A Girl Like You" by the Smithereens was written for Say Anything.
The Smithereens' "In A Lonely Place" was written decades after the film of the same name. It lift the film's catchphrase of "I was born when she kissed me. I died when she left me. I lived a few weeks while she loved me" almost whole, changing it slightly to "I was born the day I met you, lived a while when you loved me, died a little when we broke apart."

"William, It Was Really Nothing" by The Smiths is based on the film Billy Liar. I think there are other Smiths songs in this category, some maybe even based on this film as well.

There is also "Billy Liar" by the Decemberists.

No one has said "Breakfast at Tiffany's" by Deep Blue Something yet. But in a wierd way that's a good thing because no one should be thinking about that song. It sucks that I did. Sorry.

And I guess since i talked about it recently, "Proof" by Coldplay

Voodoo Child, Thursday, 15 September 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

more springsteen:

"nebraska," which was inspired by the movie "badlands."

"born in the u.s.a.," which was inspired by the working title of the movie that became "light of day," in which another springsteen song did appear on the soundtrack (as compensation for the boss having stolen the first title).

I'm confused. I thought this topic was more about bands that wrote songs with the intention of it appearing on the soundtrack but for whatever reasons didn't make it. Is it also about straight up movie-related songs?

I thought this topic was more about bands that wrote songs with the intention of it appearing on the soundtrack but for whatever reasons didn't make it.

Harry Nilsson - I Guess the Lord Must Be In New York City (for "Midnight Cowboy", they used "Everybody's Talkin'" instead)

Is it also about straight up movie-related songs?

The Jam - Absolute Beginners (maybe more about the book than the film?)
