Marmalade S/D

To my mind a one-hit wonder, with the one hit being "Reflections of My Life." Maybe in the the UK they had another hit, a cover of "Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da"? Some people I respect around here have recommended them to me as kind of a pop psych group (I think) so the other day I went and got Marmalade: The Ultimate Collection, which is not two but three CDs! Anyway, any recommendations on what songs I should be paying attention to as I listen to this gigantic thing?

I mean, right now I am somewhere near the beginning of Disc 2, where the hit finally appeared as the first track, and they are doing some kind of an R&B workout and singing about "Rolling, Rolling [somewhere or other]" and somebody just did a Big Bopper imitation!

"I Hear the Rain" is pretty good.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

Er, "I See the Rain" rather.

Yeah, that's track 5 on disc one. I wasn't paying too much attention at that point when I was listening, but maybe I read that Jimi Hendrix liked that one? In any case, I seem to remember hearing a version of "Hey Joe" on there.

It's on Nuggets II too! Is it really a Nugget if I forgot to dug it!?

"Kaleidoscope"
"I See the Rain"
"Butterfly"
"Man in a Shop"

trade in that "Ultimate" 3CD towards a copy of Kaleidoscope: The Psych-Pop Sessions. it's all the Marmalade you need.

"Rainbow" and "My Little One" are the strongest cuts, surprisingly sensitive numbers. The "Ob-La-Di" cover is pretty pedestrian and in no way an improvement over the Beatles' original. "Can't Stop Now" has a nice of-its-time beat, and "Wait For Me, Marianne" features strong vocals. Does that collection include their mini-comeback hit "Falling Apart at the Seams"? That one's kind of cute, in an anonymous-studio-hacks kind of way; it seems to borrow a bit from the Four Seasons comeback songs of the period.

And for the love of all that is good, skip "Radancer."

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Friday, 16 September 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

"Falling Apart..." is not on there. "Radancer" is, though. Is that a madeup word? Perhaps it is explained by the lyrics.

I should have bought one of the comps you recommended on allmusic, Joe. Usually I do my research a little more carefully.

The band they are reminding me of the most are the even less well-known Timebox.

Some other guy
Back on the road
Rainbow
Kaleidoscope
I see the rain
Fight say the mighty
Cousin Norman
Lady of Katrine
I'll be home in a day or so
The ballad of cherry flavour
Wait for me Mary-Anne
Baby make it soon
Junior Campbell's "Sweet illusion" and "Falling apart at the seams" are great too

Now I'm listening to a track that sounds exactly like Free! I guess they're pretty versatile.

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 16 September 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

OK, I see some repetition now- the first CD had a cover of "I Shall Be Released" and the third one has a song that sounds a lot like "I Shall Be Released."

I just got up to "Radancer." Ugh. Apparently it got a boost in the charts at the time of its release because there was a scandal sheet writeup about one of the Marmalades groupie activity.

what - radancer is great and its about the scandal so was recorded before the incident

Yes, I believe you are right - about the timing, at least.

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 16 September 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

I don't like their later stuff at all. "Psych-Pop" is all you need, in my estimation. My fave by a long shot is "Station on Third Avenue," which is super-pop at its best, and somewhat banal--super-banal, I guess. The Easybeats version of this, found on the collection of outtakes/rarities "The Shame Just Drained," is also real interesting.

"Can't Stop Now." A hit in Miami well before "Reflections."

What is it with Lawrence and the Scots?

k/l (Ken L), Saturday, 17 September 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

I mean, he hangs out with Momus, inspires Belle and Sebastian, sings about Marmalade- is he some sort of honorary Scotsman? What else is he up to, best friends with Billy Connolly?
