I'll take Welsh rockers for a thousand, then: Gene Loves Jezebel, the Alarm, the keyboard player from Kula Shaker, Tom Jones, ummmmmmmm.....one-time Killing Joke bass player - Taif, the Stereophonics, ummmm....aren't the Manic Street Preachers from Wales too?
I guess leeks and silly accents don't always sprell rock'n'roll splendor.

None of the bands that Alex in NYC mentioned are from Cardiff.
Young Marbe Giants came from Cardiff.
but after that No Cardiff band of note made it - not even in the indie charts. In the 80s Welsh rock music had a very low profile - [the only Welsh bands to make any sales impact during the eighties were North Wales, Rhyl band The Alarm, and Gene Loves Jezebel were from Port Talbot.]
Rick & Karl (from later Underworld fame) attented Cardiff University in the early 80s and formed Freur.
There is the naff Shakin Stevens with his Elvis impersonation.
For a capital city of Wales and a key regional city of the UK - Cardiff's contribution to rock music has been abysmal.
[Darling Buds were from Newport, Gwent and as Andy mentioned Green Gartside woz born in Wales - somewhere in Gwent/ Monmouthshire I think - indeed in the 90s he moved back to Wales]
