Bloc Party: Two More Years

Just caught the video for this track. Perhaps it is tiresome and rockist to think such thoughts, but these guys are so clearly the best band in the world right now that it's not funny. Best. Rhythm Section. Ever. I'm going to see them in Atlanta next week - haven't been so excited about a show in a long time.

John Hunter, Saturday, 17 September 2005 05:29 (twenty years ago)

Shite song.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Saturday, 17 September 2005 05:32 (twenty years ago)

And their rhthym section is way overrated. Even in terms of the whole "post punk revival" thing, there are tons of bands with better rhythm sectiosn than them.. Interpol, for one..

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Saturday, 17 September 2005 05:32 (twenty years ago)

Tough crowd.

I like Interpol a lot, but their rhythm section is not half as interesting as Bloc Party's.

John Hunter, Saturday, 17 September 2005 05:34 (twenty years ago)

Sorry if I was hostile, I'm really tired and I sort of hate bloc party now (again).

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Saturday, 17 September 2005 05:35 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I don't get what makes their rhthym section impressive. He rides the hi hat some times. so uhmm... funky I guess.

the killers drummer is better

fjkfjk, Saturday, 17 September 2005 06:10 (twenty years ago)

Interpol's rhythm section = *yawn*

Actually, Interpol as a whole = *yawn*

I'm sort of cooling on "Two More Years," but I still think BP is bigger and better than the class they've been mistakenly lumped in with. And yes, the rhythm section is fucking brutal.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 17 September 2005 06:40 (twenty years ago)

solid song. why discuss rhythm sections, is this some kind of heavy metal forum from early 90s? is tom araya better than than the metallica drummer? blah, blah...

karl76 (karl76), Saturday, 17 September 2005 07:35 (twenty years ago)

the metallica drummer has a NAME, bro. lars ulrich, god among men, pounder of skins

gear (gear), Saturday, 17 September 2005 07:40 (twenty years ago)

also, Geoff Tate: underrated vox, introspective lyrics, best singer around.

later dudes

gear (gear), Saturday, 17 September 2005 07:40 (twenty years ago)

I have yet to hear a rhythmically interesting bloc party track.

simon 803 (simon 803), Saturday, 17 September 2005 07:58 (twenty years ago)

its their drummer that makes the band. theyre fucking dreary otherwise. kele's voice has no life.

okok, Saturday, 17 September 2005 08:36 (twenty years ago)

"I have yet to hear a rhythmically interesting bloc party track."

listen to the remix album

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Saturday, 17 September 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

I have yet to hear an rhythmically interesting bloc party track.

Fixed.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 17 September 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

haha Dom.

(you've heard them... just didn't like them)

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 17 September 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

haha you know why the dumb white indie kidz listen to party block? so they can say "oh i listen to BLACK PEOPLE MUSIC and so i am not a racism" without listening to hip hop ahahahaha

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, Saturday, 17 September 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

ive heard a lot of white people talk about bloc party and no one has said that.

harshaw (jube), Saturday, 17 September 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

also, the song is ok

harshaw (jube), Saturday, 17 September 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

that is because the indie kidz arent gonna admit it duhhhhhh

but look! the lead singer is a BLACK and has the DREADLOCKS

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, Saturday, 17 September 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

Tom Araya is a bass player. You mean Dave Lombardo. And Dave Lombardo creams every drummer. Including the Bloc Party bozo and his disco high hats.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Saturday, 17 September 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

dom... spot on but I didn't want to go full throttle on the dislike of bloc party and have a point discounted as such. remix album = dullsville. listened to it once and that was way more than enough. the original record was more than enough "good producer polishing turd' for me.
and wasn't dave lombardo kind of a shitty drummer too? not as terrible as lars ulrich but it was all fast double kick action no invention.

simon 803 (simon 803), Saturday, 17 September 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

Not bad song, though it reminds me some of the album tracks... maybe This Modern Love?

zeus, Saturday, 17 September 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

but these guys are so clearly the best band in the world right now that it's not funny.

Actually, I think the concept that they are even an average rock band is pretty fucking hilarious!

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Saturday, 17 September 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

Since they are clearly so much better than average. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 17 September 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps it is tiresome and rockist to think such thoughts, but these guys are so clearly the best band in the world right now that it's not funny.

oh ilm, so much to answer for

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 17 September 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

...said the man who hearts The Jicks.

xxp

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 17 September 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

OH NO YOU DIDN'T

mookieproof (mookieproof), Saturday, 17 September 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

I just heard the Bloc Party for the first time today! I like how the record sounds, I like that the guitars make room for the bass, and the drummer IS good.

Saddling them with "best rhythm section out there" hype is just mean though, there's no way they can stand up to that.

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

"the metallica drummer has a NAME, bro. lars ulrich, god among men, pounder of skins"

Lars' drumming is second rate... he can barely keep up with the band live.

Quinn (quinn), Saturday, 17 September 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

But it's fucking fantastic on some of those records!

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 17 September 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I thought two more years was how long we were giving Bloc Party before they fade into obscurity.

ohisee, Saturday, 17 September 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

bloc party is so fucking overrated it's killing me. i used to love this band and now i can't stand them, thanks to oversaturation in the media, in like every outlet thinkable. reading the pitchfork interview with the frontman didn't help, as he comes off as outrageously full of shit. can't they just go away for a while?

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Saturday, 17 September 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

...now i can't stand them, thanks to oversaturation in the media, in like every outlet thinkable.

All I do is listen to the record. I see no reason to read any press about them anymore, since I've made up my mind that they're pretty damn good.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 17 September 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

i literally cannot avoid the oversaturation. the radio, tv, every blog, i get tons of emails a day, the remix album in the mail the other day, contests, target ads, blah blah blah. obviously the music is what matters and i understand your point, but i wish they had whored themselves out at least just a tiny bit less.

that said, i just listened to the new single and really liked it. so go figure.

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Saturday, 17 September 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

also i forgot, i was extremely disappointed with their live show, which was a huge turn off.

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Saturday, 17 September 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

Ahh, I have yet to see them live (and have been mostly disappointed with the live recordings I've heard). But that probably wouldn't sway me a great deal anyway.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 17 September 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

I like this song way more than anything on Silent Alarm, although I still like it less than the Phones remix of "Banquet".

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Saturday, 17 September 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

I can understand sovietpanda, I was bit the same with Kaiser Chiefs. I liked their record and the singles first, but in the last few months it's getting too much of them.

zeus, Saturday, 17 September 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

The Streets remix of Banquet is the real cream of the new single. fuckingly awesome appology for stealing jo whileys microphone some years ago. but, i know plenty ILMers hate overhyped music - both skinner and bloc party, so this should be their double hate issue.

karl76 (karl76), Saturday, 17 September 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

bestmost rhythm section ever

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 18 September 2005 05:15 (twenty years ago)

time for bed me thinks

trip you up, Sunday, 18 September 2005 05:28 (twenty years ago)

Overhype and unwarranted media saturation hasn't put ILZers off shit like MIA or Kanye West - both vastly inferior to Bloc Party and Kaiser Chiefs.

Pvt. Dave Goes To Far (scarlet), Sunday, 18 September 2005 08:44 (twenty years ago)

Their drummer's the only thing I like about them! His drumming's a breath of fresh air compared to the rest of the group. I swear, if The Comsat Angels were to reform this instant and Mik Glaisher didn't want to take part, they should contact BP's drummer as he'd be much better there than in Bloc Party.

Ian Riese-Moraine: Let this bastard out, and you'll get whiplash! (Eastern Mantr, Sunday, 18 September 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

I don't get the buzz over this band. They've so average they've perfected average into an art form. Everything's so well done and polished, but the fact remains that the actual songwriting is garbage.

Hat (Hat), Sunday, 18 September 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

BP are not average. They are one of the best new bands out. Matt Tong is a unreal drummer, and the other members are fantastic at what they do.
Anyone who thinks theyre average needs their head looking at.
And what the fuck is this about going off a band because they get alot of Appreaciation?! You should Appreaciate a band because of their MUSIC!!!! Idiot sovietpanda, fucking idiot.

Jonny, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

Ah preachy hate.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

saw 'em last night in ATL - very energetic show, the drummer is indeed a beast, they played a lot longer than I would have figured for a band w/ only one full-length album - on the downside, either Kele's voice was kinda shot from touring or else he's just not a very good singer - he was great on all the shouty parts, but any time he had to really sing ("Blue Light" "So Here We Are")...well, i'll just say he wasn't too close to sounding like he did on record (contrast w/ Sufjan Stevens the other night, who sings like a goddamn angel).

Josh Love (screamapillar), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

Okay, let's get one thing straight...Bloc Party are not just 'an average band'...personally I think that they're extraordinary-Kele's vocals and Matt's Drumming is effortless...as for 'Two more Years',it's a real grower and right now it's a quality track...it just shows that they can harness their skills from high tempo tracks such as 'Like Eating Glass' to the slower ones...Stop the bollocks and get with Bloc Party as other bands can seriously take note

Simon Brett, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

I love random googler fanboys.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

I think Matt Tong is a pretty decent drummer.

HE MOST CERTAINLY IS NOT, HOWEVER, "THE" JAMES LO, WHO SHAMES ALL OF THESE OTHER CLOWNS WHO HAVE BEEN MENTIONED

jb, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Please refer to them by their correct name, England's Ethnically Diverse Bloc Party. Or "The Rubbishes", as I like to call them.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

overheard:

"The singer's gay, isn't he?"
"No, he isn't gay, he's black."
"What, you can't be both? [Snort]".

Was the individual who started this thread from a street team?

Nicht, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Dom Passantino don't care about black people (in indie bands).

LOL

jive session (elwisty), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

WHAT THE FUCK IS YOUR PROBLEM...YOU WNAKING SHITHEAD!
Leave the guy alone. So what if he's black. You just cant handle the fact that a black geezer cud do what you can do and even better! Indie music isnt just a 'white' thing and colour should not cloud the way you view music/things. He shares the same likeness for music as your average white kid growing up in the 70's pop culture, and all he's done is honed in on that particular style of music and does it and fucking does it well. The band 'are' extraordinary. They sound great and apart from coldplay, piss on all the other bands that are out there at the mo!

Esther La' Montagne, Wednesday, 28 September 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

Are the NME Forums closed ?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

Bloc Party have been touring so intensely this year it's not surprising if every show isn't a killer (factoring in how new and relatively unexperienced they are). That said, Bloc Party @ the Troc in Philly back in june was a really energetic show, everyone off their feet, the band super into it, lots of stage banter, Matt Tong crowd-surfing, breaking his styx... it was the last US show before their trip round Europe, so it was really kind of like a victory show.

bill neil (inabillity), Thursday, 29 September 2005 05:08 (twenty years ago)

Maybe it's just me, but I think the production on Two More Years pales in comparison to the album. The drums aren't mixed high enough, they kind of take second stage, which is unfortunate. Other than that it's an alright song, but not quite on the same level as pretty much anything from Silent Alarm.

bill neil (inabillity), Thursday, 29 September 2005 05:12 (twenty years ago)

Well, I really like both Interpol and Bloc Party, so there. Each to their own; if you don't like it turn it off. And I only just recently discovered that there is a *black* guy in the band, and it hasn't changed my perception of the band whatsoever. Shockah.

salexander (salexander), Thursday, 29 September 2005 05:19 (twenty years ago)

Was the individual who started this thread from a street team?

No, I'm not. Just a fan. I caught the show in Atlanta Monday night, and Matt Tong is an unfuckingbelievable drummer. Maybe Keith Moon was that good in 1965 - that's about the only comparison I can think of. The rest of the band are good, but Mr. Tong steals the show.

John Hunter, Thursday, 29 September 2005 06:27 (twenty years ago)

so there's a block guy in black party?

amon (eman), Thursday, 29 September 2005 11:11 (twenty years ago)

i though jack johnson was white

N_RQ (Enrique), Thursday, 29 September 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

No, jack johnson is black. Never seen the film but know of the man. Sad story......but what is your point?

essie, Thursday, 29 September 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

i like 2 more years it makes me have orgasms

penis, Sunday, 2 October 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

they b gud but need to make there bass lne a lot better cos there BOLLOCKS

bof, Sunday, 2 October 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

I thought Helicopter was too much like a derivative GoF song but I loved Banquet.

Cunga (Cunga), Sunday, 2 October 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

i like the music but the singer doesn't get any points for style since he's boring. i could compare him to luke sutherland cause he's black and he's gay and he was in an indie band too but he was awesome and actually bloc party aren't a million miles removed from the more aggro stuff from LFK like Rhino and Vanilla.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

Bloc Party is not for everyone, clearly, if you have enough time to be spending on these message boards, why not spend it with bands you actually like rather than hating on bands you don't? There is no perfect band, if you talk about anything long enough, especially a band, you are going to find something bad about it. Why not idealize the music and forget about the rare parts yo don't like. If you like exciting singers, check out System of A Down, the reason bands have a certain sound is because they know what they like and they get to choose their own sound, god save us if all the people in this message board got to have their way with Bloc Party's sound.

Be Happy or Get the Fuck Out!

Tim Bones, Saturday, 8 October 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

what?

Benjamin H (BillMartini), Saturday, 8 October 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

four months pass...
So Kele IS in fact gay, right?...just out of curiousity.

Vilma, Tuesday, 28 February 2006 18:10 (nineteen years ago)

No, he's BLACK.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 20:55 (nineteen years ago)

These guys better get a follow-up out before the buzz dies and they lose momentum...

Mitya (mitya), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 00:01 (nineteen years ago)

They've been touring for almost every day the last 18 months. I'm surprised they could even write and record two songs and release them as a single.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 00:16 (nineteen years ago)

I had not listened to Bloc Party until I looked at this thread (oh-so-out of the new rock loop). Do people actually think that this is what a good rhythm section sounds like?

Sean Braudis (Sean Braudis), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 00:25 (nineteen years ago)

It depends. Are you one of those geeks who worships King Crimson?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 00:25 (nineteen years ago)

Of course not. But I could name 30 better drummers in indie rock alone and not even break a sweat. Les Savy Fav was playing a vastly more interesting version of this shit six years ago.

Sean Braudis (Sean Braudis), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 00:28 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe so, but for every 1 LSF song I like, there are about 4 Bloc Party songs.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 00:31 (nineteen years ago)
