They suck on record too.

You're nuts. Was it the DJ tour or the live show?

Candicissima (candicissima), Saturday, 17 September 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

not sure, i don't know too much about him, i was just looking to go see a show on a friday night.

anyway, he just pressed play on a laptop, got behind a drumset where he played very badly (didn't matter cause he couldn't be heard) and some other dj tapped out bass hits & hand claps (which were already in the track) on a drum machine, and that was fuckin it.

Scott Heren's a 'they' now?

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Saturday, 17 September 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

well there's 73 of him, isn't there?

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 17 September 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

When I saw them at ATP05 they kind of owned it. But there was bass, keys, 2 drummers, turntables, etc. It was pretty tight.

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Saturday, 17 September 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

i saw him at bimbo's SF and was way underwhelmed. partly it was the combination of a standoffish indie rock crowd and an uninteresting electronic performance. shadow was much better live. at least he had some cool visuals. i have to agree about prefuse 73's recordings for the most part too. i think he has a great sense of melody but that stuttering sample tic bizness is way played out. i really dig the savath and savalas though.

ULTRA SHOCKER

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Saturday, 17 September 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i saw him at intonation. kinda really dissapointed.

jonathan - stl (jonathan - stl), Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

that ATP 05 set bored my hole off! it was sauna-like in there by that point on sunday though so my tolerance levels had probably evaporated by that point..
when they played there before with just three of them it was really really good though (imho), the drummer especially, oh well...

JonBenet Taxidermy (piratestyle), Saturday, 17 September 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

i saw him maybe a year ago and it wasnt terribly thrilling

astroblaster (astroblaster), Saturday, 17 September 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

he's a weak commie beat smith who is so full of himself
his recordings are way like totally over rated
and he looks like a dirty flea

'The '92 Vs '02 Collection' EP was good, and then ...?

But really, as far as the live thing, electronic acts can rarely pull it off to a satisfying degree -- especially when there's a laptop involved.

Anyone ever see Dabrye's live set? 'Instrmntl" and 'One/Three" are so good that I think I would give it a chance.

sublime - could it be that what you saw was the opener? I saw DJ Nobody and Prefuse last night in Miami...Nobody was two guys messing around as you described and Prefuse was two drummers and a laptop - marginally better but I've seen him three times now and once would've been sufficient, though the people I was with who hadn't seen him before were fairly into it.

You should see The Residents! They are great.

I was always tempted to by a Prefuse 73 album, but I felt like maybe someone was trying to pull a fast one on me. I'm a paranoid shopper. Plus, I'm still smarting from the time that ILM made me buy an Avalanches record.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 18 September 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

The Avalanches album was good, you fun-hater. Or at least Gimmix was pretty damn entertaining if a little sunny-day groove heavy. As a live act, I liked Prefuse when it was him, another drummer, a DJ, and one other guy messing with samplers and a keyboard. Not so hot when it was him alone messing with a sampler, although that might be decent if he had someone rapping over it. Who's his touring drummer anyway, is it the guy from Tortoise?

I still have lots of disappointment that he was touring with Battles and Beans and at no point did either of the first two acts come on to collaborate with him live. I mean, Tyondai and Beans were on his album!

mike h. (mike h.), Sunday, 18 September 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

i've never felt so ripped off as after the show the residents played in mtl a couple of years ago... and i didn't even pay for my ticket. totally pathetic.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 18 September 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

really? when i saw them they were great.

At the first NYC show in Brooklyn, Tyondai came out to do vocals over the encore song.

Candicissima (candicissima), Sunday, 18 September 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

scott: it was an AWFUL show... they were promoting their dvd, which was playing on a little screen above the stage. the singer would come out and use the remote control to navigate through the dvd menus and select tracks, which they'd i'd guess pretend to play along to. so dissapointing, so poor in conception and execution

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 18 September 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

eight months pass...
Yeah, saw him in LA a while back, it was ok, the drummer/bass player thing can be cool if it's done right but it was ok.

p.s. just saw four tet a couple weeks ago. He played with a live drummer also and it just didn't flow. Didn't like it at all.
