The Brainwasher (Twilight), Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

I just saw them the other night in Cambridge, MA and it was awesome.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Saturday, 17 September 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

mrjosh -

What did they play? Mostly new material?

Also, did they have any merchandise (I'm mostly wondering about some of their older harder to find CDs) for sale?

Michael Copeland, Saturday, 17 September 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

i was there, too... that was a great show
i had the luck to have a few words with (drummer) greg saunier, too... what a cool guy.

they played alot of new stuff (but some old favorites too of course)

, and they had a merchandise booth but i didn't even look cause i was flat on cash.

Reveille

rssgn, Sunday, 18 September 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

Favorite songs? "Milkman," "Dummy Discards a Heart," "Spiral Golden Town."

Douglas (Douglas), Sunday, 18 September 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

i prefer apple o to reveille but both are neat

jimmy glass (electricsound), Sunday, 18 September 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

All their albums have been pretty brilliant but especially those after John Dieterich joined (Reveille and beyond). I really don't much like Green Cosmos though. And the side projects are hit and miss.
Michael Copeland - I think they usually have Halfbird at the merch table but nothing older than that.

one year passes...

Anyone care to offer up a suggested playlist for the poppier side of Deerhoof?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 12 November 2010 14:28 (fifteen years ago)

some reasonably poppy songs without all those time changes & awkward chords (my favourite bits, sadly)

Top Tim Rubies
Matchbook Seeks Maniac
Chandelier Searchlight
Top Tim Rubies
Lemon & Little Lemon
New Sneakers
Spiral Golden Town

zappi, Friday, 12 November 2010 17:23 (fifteen years ago)

Dummy Discards A Heart
Milk Man

like, half of Apple O'

twisted sister hazel dickens (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 12 November 2010 17:30 (fifteen years ago)

I can't really think of any deerhoof songs that are non poppy.

reallysmoothmusic (Jamie_ATP), Friday, 12 November 2010 17:35 (fifteen years ago)

dirt pirate creed contains little pop

naked human hands and a foam rubber head (contenderizer), Friday, 12 November 2010 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

lol your label co-released 'Look Away', which is hardly a pop song

zappi, Friday, 12 November 2010 17:46 (fifteen years ago)

"Believe ESP" from Friend Oppo is pretty poppy. Missus T is still whistling the Stravinksian chorus thing from it three years after it came out. "Secret Mobilization" from the new record is a sweet jam also.

Stevie T, Friday, 12 November 2010 17:54 (fifteen years ago)

I probably have too wide a definition of pop.

reallysmoothmusic (Jamie_ATP), Friday, 12 November 2010 22:17 (fifteen years ago)

five years pass...

"Black Pitch" is great. Love when the rhythms collide and manage to stay in tune.

From Rolling 2016 Indie Rock/Pop:

Just finished my first listen to Deerhoof's The Magic(on promo, not First Listen, though that's linked below. Dunno how sound quality compares, FL's sometimes isn't as good). 15 tracks in 40' 29", and I know I haven't taken it all in, but plenty instant gratification---"Plastic Thrills" could've been the fitting title track---and I love the drumming throughout:

yeah, ive never been a huge Deerhoof guy but i thought that new one sounded great...for the band's fans, is this their most "accessible"? or no?

i don't think The Magic is any more accessible than Apple O' or Milk Man or Breakup Song. it is fantastic though, has some of my favorite songs of theirs in years ("Criminals of the Dream," "Acceptance Speech," "Debut").
