Caribou - The Milk of Human Kindness
Explosions in the Sky - Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die...
McLusky - The Difference Between Me and You Is That I'm Not On Fire
Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene
Bjork - Drawing Restaint 9
SLeeping People - Sleeping People
The Radio Dept. - Lesser Matters
Ghost - Hypnotic Underworld
Fennesz - Venice
Pluramon - Dreams Top Rock

The Red Krayola - God Bless The Red Krayola and All Who Sail With It
Low - Things We Lost in the Fire
Os Mutantes - Os Mutantes

Eno - Before and After Science
Tom Waits - Rain Dogs
Talk Talk - Laughing Stock
The Red Krayola - God Bless The Red Krayola and All Who Sail With It

Do you own:
Dntel - Life Is Full of Possibilities?
Keith Fullerton Whitman - Playthroughs?
Pan Sonic - Kesto?
Gas - Pop?
Tim Hecker - Haunt Me, Haunt Me, Do It Again?
Cyann and Ben - Spring?

You might like those too, looking at that list - I'd take them over most of the other records I didn't mention.

Also, it depends when your birthday is: my birthday is in October, and I'm buying myself Deerhoof - The Runners Four and Wolf Parade.

In recommendation order:

Tom Waits - Rain Dogs
McLusky - The Difference Between Me and You Is That I'm Not On Fire
Bark Psychosis - Codename: Dustsucker
Low - Things We Lost in the Fire
Bjork - Drawing Restaint 9 (I actually didn't know that this was out, but if it is, the samples I've heard are good)

As for other thoughts, "Franks Wild Years" and "Swordfishtrombones" by Waits are pretty indispensible if you don't already have them.

Also, it depends when your birthday is: my birthday is in October, and I'm buying myself Deerhoof - The Runners Four and Wolf Parade.

The Runner's Four comes out a few days before my birthday, but I'll be getting it on release day.

Pluramon - Dreams Top Rock
Talk Talk - Laughing Stock
Laika - Sound of the Satellites
Explosions in the Sky - Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die...
Bark Psychosis - Codename: Dustsucker

The Pluramon tops my list, being both 1) the most entertaining MBV-alike album I've heard since, um, 1998 or so, and 2) the only one on my list likely to go out of print permanently in the near future. Those Stereolab and Tom Waits selections will be still be around, and won't date too badly, 10 years from now.

pirouette (35 Hertz), Thursday, 26 October 2006 16:13 (nineteen years ago)

Hella - Hold Your Horse Is (no question..none)
Talk Talk - Laughing Stock (no question..none)
Tom Waits - Rain Dogs (" " " " " )
and the Eno and Stereolab
