Anybody heard this? The guitar playing is quite original, and at times has an Arabic flavor. There are a bunch of little carefully thought out guitar pieces, and it all goes together effortlessly. Fun to listen to, but also sonically interesting, and I imagine it will hold up well on repeated listens. I never heard their first album...any good?

Yeah it's a great album. I have their first album and I really don't know which is better.

But if you like this album then you'd like the first one.

I love the sitar in the last two songs. I think it would work well with every track...too bad.

Their guitarist is pretty great, but their songs come off pretty stale after about 20 minutes. They could make a few great eps.

i live in portland now. are these guys worth seeing live?

ten months pass...
Anybody see them in Chicago on Friday? My car broke down on the way to the show, so I never made it.

three weeks pass...
I'm still crazy about these guys. Their songs are simultaneously complex and accessible. Why isn't this band huge? The guitar playing, solos, song construction--it's all pretty inspiring.

it's a shame. they should be, i blame their label, an all around has been collection of artists, that sadly the joggers are now stuck with.

That's a mean thing to say about 4AD.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 August 2006 05:10 (nineteen years ago)

umm, have any of you people that like this band ever heard the fall? i can't believe dude sings like that, all i can think of when i see/ hear them is how much i'd rather be home listening to "slates" or something.

yetimike (McGonigal), Monday, 28 August 2006 05:15 (nineteen years ago)

Why isn't this band huge?

Probably has something to do with the terrible vocals. I saw these guys a few months ago and was impressed by their songcraft and chops. Then they sang.

Perfect body + ugly face = pass.

Uh, yeah, I have heard The Fall, but their songs don't have half the substance, and I bore of them fast. I hear more Malkmus than M.E.S., but I don't generally listen to music for the vocals anyway.

Patrick South (Patrick South), Monday, 28 August 2006 06:07 (nineteen years ago)

woah. the joggers = double "the substance" of the fall? i'm trying to think of the bizarro world that might be possible on; can't do it, sorry.

funny you mention malkmus, as he and steve anderson (slovenly) are two of the only singer i can think of who actually got away with having mark smith as an obvious influence.

yetimike (McGonigal), Monday, 28 August 2006 06:19 (nineteen years ago)

I like this album quite a bit.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 28 August 2006 06:59 (nineteen years ago)

Look, I like the Fall, but I really don't see any comparisons other than some slight vocal leanings.

The worst recent offenders of this phenomenon are The Wilderness (P.I.L.). I can't listen to them at all.
