Blur are a pretty creative band. Considering.

I was just listening to Modern Life Is Rubbish, and I think it's one great record. Sure Blur hasn't done anything decent in a while (some ok, nothing *as* good since), but anyway I think that album stands up. Out of context, it's better than one-dimensional 'Nevermind' by a long shot.

Just making sure this appears in new answers. Mainly cos its bound to get some backs up amongst all you Damon haters out there!

Shout away...

'Modern Life is Rubbish" is a good album. Shortly thereafter though, Mr. Albarn tried to tranform himself into Damon Amis, and that's where things went downhill fast. At least he'd redeem himself a bit with that splendid non-Blur project... no, not Gorillaz. I'm talking about his work with Nyman on the 'Ravenous' score, even if it did recall Popol Vuh's work on 'Nosferatu.' As for 'Nevermind,' it predates MLIR by about two years... but I'll agree easily that MLIR makes it look pathetic. What is 'Nevermind' other than a slowed-down Seattle-grunge rip-off of Killing Joke?

Tim DiGravina, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That'll get Alex going. And he'll likely agree with you. ;-)

I listen to the B-sides of MLIR days more than anything else. I will say "Chemical World" is mighty nice stuff, mang. Friend of mine proclaimed the album after it came out in America as the best XTC album in a while -- which makes sense given that Mr. Partridge was allegedly set to produce at one point. And as we all know, he could easily give Damon a run for his money in both hair loss and, um, a strong sense of self-esteem, shall we say, which obviously led Damon to cut his losses before Andy P. thrashed him. WHICH I WOULD HAVE PAID MONEY TO SEE.

Modern Life Is Rubbish is my favorite Blur album.

Ally, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Holy God I agree with Ally.

"For Tomorrow" - marvellous single, still sounds great. Rest of album - eh, pretty disappointing. I'd spent the whole last year before it came out exploring the musical fantasy England created by Julian Cope and XTC so it was cool to find a current band interested in exploring that, and the goodwill thus generated made me try very hard to like it but...eh, the songs never grabbed me, the evocations never evoked. Then Parklife came out and I HATED it - now I think I'd probably like it a lot more and go along with the consensus that sees MLIR as an intriguing dress rehearsal.

No, you aren't allowed to agree with me after you called us rude for no reason.

Ally, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah MLIR is good. But then, the band is good. despite all the blur-haters, I've never agreed with anyone who said they weren't a creative and exciting band. Aside from their debut, I think they've produced a very high qulaity body of work, regardless of what you think of them as public figures.

g, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think they're rubbish these days.

And how often do you find yourself listening to "Music is My Radar"?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's only one song though, and obviously jsut thrown out to go on theat best of comp. I will give them the benefit of the doubt until i hear a proper album. Unlike some, I lilked 13 well enough.,..

i carn;t type btw

"Music Is My Radar" is the best Blur song I've heard since "There's No Other Way". I don't really understand why people are so down on it.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Music Is My Radar"

I, um, like that song as well. Then again, if this board were to grade contributors on the levels of their enjoyment of Blur I'd probably be in the 99% percentile.

Me too Tom. Though I loved Modern Life... There is something very English about it. Something peculiar.

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

aren;t Parklife and The Great Escape pretty English as well?

I just calls 'em as I sees 'um, yo.

I like the one that Greeham wrote

"Young and Lovely" is one of my favourite Blur tunes, a B-side on the Chemical World 12"

Other than that, I think 13 is about their best so far.

tav, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Music is my Radar is a good song, but I like it's b-side Black Book better.
