U2 opening acts

Rarely have I seen a big rock band pick a bunch of openers that made them look hip and completely lame at the same time. Apparently, the openers for the fall leg of U2's tour will be:

Dashboard Confessional – Sept. 12 through 25
Keane – October 3-14
Damian Marley – October 16th through Nov. 9th
Patti Smith – Nov. 21 & 22 at Madison Square Garden
Arcade Fire in Ottawa & Montreal
Kanye West December 14 through 19th.

I mean, really ...

Opening up for U2 I've seen the The Alarm, The Red Rockers, and Lone Justice.

If memory serves, the Velvet Underground opened up for them in Europe somewhere.

If I were Bono (and heavens above, I hope I will be one day), I would have more of Keane because they are so fantastic and less of those people who I don't know of (Patty Smith, The Arcane Fire and Key West).

Yes I saw the Velvet Underground opening for U2 in Paris. And it was absolutely traumatic. 50000 people wondering : "who are these old people on stage ?"

snowballing (snowballing), Monday, 19 September 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

They kept wondering that throughout the evening, doubtless.

I saw Stereo MCs and Die Toten Hosen open for them in Frankfurt and Berlin in '93. Interesting combo.

KPH, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

Die Toten Hosen!!!!!

I'm starting to think that U2 is some of amalgamation of the greatest band ever with the greatest practical joke ever.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)
