CMJ is totally overblown and not worth the $. I don't know why it continues to draw people... Talk about a scam!

CMJ Hater, Monday, 19 September 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

Wait, there's money involved?

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 19 September 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

There's two words in show business, dude.

Old School (sexyDancer), Monday, 19 September 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

Same with SXSW.

harken, Monday, 19 September 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

I think it's cool that someone is brave enough to disparage a famous music festival on the Internet.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 19 September 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

I fully support this thread. The more people that get fed up with CMJ, the less crowded the shows'll be when I attend them.

did Bloodshot do their saturday BBQ this year?

last time I went to a show the band was trying to sell t-shirts & bumper stickers, I was totally outraged

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Monday, 19 September 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

I was pretty bored with CMJ this year, to be honest. I had fun playing, but I couldn't really get excited about anything else.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 19 September 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

CMJ sucks only because NYC is a pain in the ass. SXSW is great because Austin makes it easy.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 19 September 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

sounds like somebody has some second-city blues

ryannyc (ryannyc), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

jaymc, who did you play with?

sleep (sleep), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

The dozen shows I went to weren't crowded at all. If you're gonna waste your time waiting in line for Clap A Ham And Say Yeah, then the problem's not with CMJ.

Clap A Ham And Say Yeah

*tumbles out of chair*

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 05:06 (twenty years ago)

yeah i mean i went to the dfa showcase and though i expected it to be terribly crowded it was bearable up until hot chip, at which point half the fucking audience cleared out before cut copy's set. weird

nervous (cochere), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 05:56 (twenty years ago)

I saw one band only - Voxtrot. And they were awesome.

Rick Spence (spencerman), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

I always hated the opportunity to see so many bands over a short period of time. I can't tell you how relieved I was to spend the past week in Minneapolis, where I didn't have to worry about being overwhelmed by so many choices.

subgenius (subgenius), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

jaymc, who did you play with?

Do you mean what band am I in, or who else was on the bill? I'm in the band Canasta. We played a Chicago showcase with The Living Blue, Baby Teeth, Cameron McGill, the Scotland Yard Gospel Choir, Head of Femur, and Le Concorde.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

five years pass...

So CMJ considers Nabisco a curmudgeonly music critic. Nice panel though.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 21:50 (fifteen years ago)

Curmudgeons of Rock Panel Is the music press too soft today? Not according to these ruthless critics who never mince words or beg to win favor.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 21:51 (fifteen years ago)
