Dylan never renounced or abandoned religion. Listen to "Time Out of Mind" from a certain angle: what lover is he singing to? And if you can't tell the difference, that's just part of a long tradition of religious writing.

But an example of what you're looking for: how about Paul Heaton of the Housemartins/Beautiful South?

sunny day real estate: jeremy enigk found religion, disbanded the group for that reason, only to reform several years later and relese "how it feels to be something on," a vestige of my high school days that i refuse to let go of. and it dont talk about jesus none at all.

z-post

well i prolly shouldn't have said 'renounced' necessarily. more like, 'stopped being publicly zealous or proselytyzing'. though that of course for the purpose of this thread includes fully abandoning and renouncing your faith. anyway, carry on!!

al green is making secular records again, despite still being a preacher. It's nice to hear!

Is there a sister thread to this just about artists finding religion?

Well... Bob Dylan quietly returned to a brand of casual Judaism shortly after releasing "Saved." So, he did reject the fish in way. At least that's what I learned at the Bob Dylan Museum.

Patrick Kinney, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 04:40 (twenty years ago)

"Reject the Fish" = my new band name

How about people changing their religion, such as Michael Jackson?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 09:14 (twenty years ago)

The Beatles all found Buddhism in the late 60s. However, George Harrison was the only one who stuck with it for all of his life.

He thought chanting was melodic.

Leonard Cohen did Jew -> Buddhist -> Jew didn't he?

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

I thought George was interested in a mystical Hindu mish-mash.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

Cohen's still a zen Buddhist -- he might mix a little bit of the old hebrew school in his worship/writing, but according to interviews about his latest record and lawsuit, he's all zen.

petesmith (plsmith), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

Prince is singing his old songs, but still a non-cursing Witnesser (J-Wit?)

Did that Fishbone guitarist ever return to the fold?

ryannyc (ryannyc), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

David Thomas of Pere Ubu was a Jehovah's Witness for awhile. I don't think he is anymore.

The Beatles all found Buddhism in the late 60s. However, George Harrison was the only one who stuck with it for all of his life.

George Harrison was not a Buddhist. He was Gaudiya Vaisnava, i.e. Hare Krishna. He died surrounded by ISKCON devotees chanting the mahamantra, gave ISKCON one of its most opulent manors, etc. AFAIK this was the religion that the Beatles all looked into when George was first learning about it.

Is Richard Thompson still a Muslim?

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

Rick James:

Crack, crack whores, sexual torture with crack pipes

Repented and found God

Died of a 9 item coctail overdose, crack included

Sinead O'Connor's bounced around a bit, including some time in a sect of Catholicism. Dunno what she's into now.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

Paul Heaton and the rest of the Housemartins' Christianity was basically a very dry joke that a bunch of journalists repeated.

Buddhism is barely a religion and I'd argue that Zen isn't one at all.

Bono took up Satanism sometime around 84, surely?
