I was ::::ugh::::; working where I am now (and, kids, that's just not right!) I'd only been there a year and change, but it had just enabled me to move and get on with my then largely responsibility-free life.

Music-wise, I believe I was listening to lots of Cop Shoot Cop (who were about to break-up), the Bends by Radiohead, I Should CoCo by Supergrass...

Actually, here's the tracklisting of a mixtape I made for a friend in March of `95

march 17, 1995 - The Rites of Spring Mix

Tricky - Overcome Monty Python - This is Side Two!
Clerks - Jay's Chant Elastica - Blue
Sandals - Feet The Stone Roses - Driving South
Beastie Boys - Skills to Pay the Bills Deep Purple - Hush
Ween - Voodoo Lady Capt. Beefheart - Diddy Wah Diddy
Monty Python - Mary Queen of Scotts Freedy Johnston - Bad Reputation
Young Disciples - Apparently Nothing Robyn Hitchcock - Uncorrected…
The Beloved - Sweet Harmony Madness - Swan Lake
Massive Attack - KarmaComa Labelle - Lady Marmalade
Tricky - Ponderosa Tricky - Hell Is Round the Corner
Dead Can Dance - Rakim Annie Lennox - Love Song for a Vampire
Jeff Buckley - Grace Dead Can Dance - American Dreaming
PJ Harvey - Meet Ze Monsta Matthew Sweet - Sick of Myself
DJ Shadow - Lost & Found The Stranglers - Ice Queen
Elastica - Vaseline
Gene - Haunted by You
Monty Python - Fish Dedication

I was 29, working as a pastry chef. Contemporary music of the time I was listening to was Stereolab, Liz Phair, Beck, and Sonic Youth's then-new album Washing Machine, considered somewhat of a return to form by me at the time... I also listened to a lot of Mekons, The Ex, Chumbawamba, Nurse With Wound, Organum (Sphyx was out that year), Current 93, Legendary Pink Dots, and other such older favorites. I started listening to Nirvana finally (I almost went to see them in '88 but didn't). Living in the same town I do now... Eugene, Oregon. Writing for Snipehunt magazine (out of Portland) as a record reviewer. Doing a regular weekly public radio show like I do now on a different station.

I miss Snipehunt.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 01:31 (twenty years ago)

19 years old. 2nd year of Uni. Living on-campus. Taking my first American History class. Meeting my husband on usenet, on the PJ newsgroup. Winning free tickets to see Jeff Buckley play a rooftop gig at the Triple R studios. Going on pub crawls. Finally learning how not to puke when I drink too much beer, and instead go right on drinking. Want to play bass guitar like Janet in Spiderbait.

24 yo - Busy year... performed Wallghost with Frown on WPKN, gave up my editor "position" at Ugly American, broke up Frown and Prader Willie, moved from NJ to Nashville, stopped playing music, started writing poetry, eloped to Alaska, listened to endless reams of Wu-Tang and The Fall.

Edward III (edward iii), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

21. Started a band. Joined another as a hired hand (much to my dismay). Broke up with fiancee. Hooked up with best friend's sister. Got back together with fiancee. Didn't buy a car that year, like I had the previous two years and the year after that. Worked at a chain record store. Still can't listen to Jagged Little Pill after hearing it at least 6000 times that summer.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

funny how this thread mutated from my initial request of info about a tiga song. in '95 i was realizing that my steady diet of "alternative" was getting really stale and hoping there was something else out there. was that the year trainspotting came out? that movie pretty much kicked in the electronic thing for me. i was also living in a small city in the mountains, in my fourth year of a seven-year undergraduate career...that year i drove to florida to buy weed in bulk and bring it back to sell at a considerable markup, and i also went to alaska to work but really hated it and left after a week. i hate fish!

viborgu, Wednesday, 21 September 2005 09:39 (twenty years ago)

xpost
oh yeah, was that the year washing machine came out? i briefly followed them on that tour.

viborgu, Wednesday, 21 September 2005 09:41 (twenty years ago)

'trainspotting' went on general release start of '96.

got robbed in February, shortly after my birthday. moved out of my apartment forthwith into a house and got ripped off there too, by a roommate with a habit, yay. I moved then into the extra room of a condo owned by a really great older dude who I wonder how is doing every so often. (he was an interior decorator; the place was amazing to look at, the parts that weren't my room I mean.) all told though I still didn't pay more than $330 a month in rent, and I certainly miss that. (hell, $330/mo was the most I paid ANYWHERE in Minneapolis. maybe I should move back there.)

I spent the entire year working at Figlio, a restaurant on Hennepin and Lake in the Uptown area of Minneapolis, as a cook in various departments. some albums I listened to a lot were Everything Is Wrong, History of Our World Part 1, Maxinquaye, To Bring You My Love, Elastica, The Real Quietstorm, the "5" Royales anthology on Rhino, and loads more. (I didn't hear my actual favorite '95 album, Luna's Penthouse, until a year later.) I quit my job on New Year's Eve and went to a big rave. I went to a LOT of raves that year as well as to loads of shows. I also bicycled everywhere during the parts of the year it wasn't freezing. I biked regularly from Uptown to my mom's house by the Mall of America and back, which took about an hour and a quarter each way. I weigh a hell of a lot more now than I did then, unsurprisingly.

I was mostly stoned off my ass in a fraternity house on the Syracuse University campus. I had just gotten my driver's license (age 20; yeah, late bloomer) and was learning to love journalism for real for the first time.

As far as listening pleasures, a freind was huge into Ween's Chocolate and Cheese and I was huge into Weezer's Blue Album, Who's Next, Let it Be, old Otis Redding, Neil Young's Freedom and Petty's Wallflowers. My formative years as a classic-rock head ...

Chris O., Wednesday, 21 September 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

age 18, junior college, I was falling hard into black nationalism with a tinge of millenial/new world order paranoia, lecturing my parents about capitalism and white supremacy and christianity(though I was ambivalent about Islam, which should have seemed a natural fit at the time; I worked with and respected a lot of NOI dudes during the course of community activism but it was too cultish and cut-and-dry for me. Mainstream Islam hadn't the political appeal I was looking for at the time). I was more levelheaded than I seemed but I overcompensated my militancy to "wake up" others. Glad now that I wasn't very successful. Went to the Million Man March with a contingent from my black student group from college, still a great experience, and came back taking my activism in a more positive direction. Read a lot of black political stuff but also got really into Shakespeare(taking a cue from bro. Malcolm) also a lot of random history and for fun I pored through library microfiche newspapers(the internets was still something to laugh at double you ha ha wtf)for anything that interested me about the world, even though I read everything with tremendous conspiratorial skepticism I think this kept me balanced somewhat. Still had white friends and all, I didn't hate on an individual level, that never felt right. That's all I should say about 1995.
Listened to any political/bohemian rap I could find, watched and taped Rap City religiously, and Death Row held me in complete thrall, whatever qualms I had about the negativity; they really had a great run. Everybody wanted to be a 'playa' that year all of a sudden iirc, especially Bay area and southern cats, and I liked that better than the 'ruffneck' sound that was getting played out in the east. Just soaking it all in. A little jazz, very little rock, though I wasn't opposed to it on racial grounds it was just another world at the time and I wouldn't have known where to start.

looking at yahoo via netscape thinking it was the most amazing thing ever, then they added banners.

oh, and i was addicted to irc .. #altmusic channel.

musically i have absolutely no idea - i hadn't shaken off my FAX records addiction, and yet to have my Earl Brutus moment (ie my late 20's reawakening to the glories of dirty rock-n-roll), so it was probably all still warp/fax/rather interesting type stuff.
