for the 2 people here who don't hate her---M.I.A. live is a worthwhile experience

I came into the whole thing soured by media saturation and interminable ILM threads, not expecting much. But it was a fucking good show! No Tamil fist-pumping, good sound (although that could vary from club to club...) She had an arresting presence--a lot of energy, but more demure than the needling diva thing I was expecting. Plus she was wearing a cute baggy snoopy tee shirt at one point. The back-up singer (Cherry?) was awesome. My only complaint was the set was fucking short. Demand more, people. You paid $15, and you did not pay that money to see Spank Rock.

i'm glad i saw her with LCD soundsytem, because if i had paid money just to see her, i would be pissed. maybe it's just a cultural thing, but seeing a british sri-lankan trying to act like an american R&B star really didn't work for me. maybe some fist-pumping would have seemed a little more authentic to me.

I think she's great live. High energy, the music sounds great etc.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

I really didn't notice much "R&B" in her performances.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

Actually none to be exact.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

BTW, show was @ 40 watt, Athens, GA, 9/19

Did she break up with Diplo and not tour with him anymore? He was my favorite part when I saw her at the Knitting Factory.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

I could give half a fuck about their relationship, so I don't know, but no it was a different dj, dj _________

emilys. (emilys.), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

Kontrol?

emilys. (emilys.), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

I love how people who hate her for whatever reason always assume that Diplo or some other man must be making her music for her.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

Yes thats exactly what I was trying to say.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

OMG OMG OMG she broke up with Diplo? Is he seeing anyone? Is he in the Diplomats?

What, you mean the record buying public?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

xpost, I wasn't actually referring to your comment, although I can see how it was read that way.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

that was for Bill.

Dom, what?

for the 2 people here who don't hate them---an annual visit to your primary care physician is a worthwhile experience

Confounded (Confounded), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

i thought her set was mercifully short, but maybe that was because I was already mostly sober and had such a long drive to get back to my digs.

jxnx (jxnx), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 03:02 (twenty years ago)

I dug her when she was here in Seattle. Has the backlash really hit ILM that hard?

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 05:15 (twenty years ago)

Yo, viborgu, would she seem more authentic if she'd asked you to wave 'em like you just don't care etc.?

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 05:16 (twenty years ago)

I'm wondering how Arular will do on the ILM '05 poll.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 05:19 (twenty years ago)

"the backlash"

are you being ironical? to be honest it's been a while and i didn't take notes so i can't lay out any specifics of why i thought she was acting "urban". i think it was the backup singer's b-boy stance combined with MIA pretty much, yeah, "waving em". maybe thats just something to me that seems really out of context from a british performer, but they're so acclimated to b-boy culture that it seems normal to them. i'll admit i had pretty high expectations which usually leads to me being disappointed. i think diplo was great though. i guess i'd prefer to see a white boy hunched over the decks than a brown girl shaking her booty. please take that out of context as necessary.

viborgu, Wednesday, 21 September 2005 08:01 (twenty years ago)

Well, it's pretty funny to hear her criticized for copping from B-boy culture when she's supposed to be "grime" or whatever, given the discussions that have gone on here about how completely removed from hip-hop grime is. As for my own reactions, I dug that she seemed to be having fun. I know some people think she can't dance, but her moves were fine by me. I've certainly seen stiffer/less engaging rappers onstage, and I've been going to see them for 20 years or so.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 08:30 (twenty years ago)

there's that too. i have a hard time with most live hip-hop shows cause when they start in with that "somebody say hheeeyyy!" i really want to hit the door. mos def put on a great show this year though. yeah, i know, backpacker hip-hop. he just had a really distinct stage presence, as much an actor as a rapper. as for discussions that have gone on here, i don't know cause i haven't been around too long. i didn't think MIA was "grime", i kind of associated her more with the panjabi thing.

viborgu, Wednesday, 21 September 2005 09:28 (twenty years ago)

I actually am a bigger fan of Mos Def as an actor than as a rapper, so that makes total sense.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

MIA is supposed to be grime?!
