jeff rosenberg (pukeandburn), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

The Arcade Fire's "Neighbourhood #1 (Tunnels)" makes me a lot of anthemic promises that I don't think the rest of Funeral properly keeps.

I Oppose All Rock and Roll (noodle vague), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

gotta agree on the Andrew W.K. I think "I Get Wet" and "I Love Music" just about sum it up.

Yo, yo, against the odds - devil with the gods
Fertilize the eggs, spread and plant new pods
The savior, three sixty degrees from the alpha to omega
Walks with the blue light saber, Remedy know the enemy
Ancient mathematics from the mentally headstrong
Physically and mentally, mind in meditation
Constant elevation, resistin' temptation
Hidden master plans of world domination

Chant my anthem, chant the anthem, chant my anthem
We got the Remedy, we got the Remedy for all your fuckin' ills

Chant the anthem, chant the anthem, chant the anthem
We got the Remedy, we got the Remedy for all your fuckin' ills
Chant the anthem, chant the anthem...

rogermexico (rogermexico), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 06:10 (twenty years ago)

I've always wanted to hear like a big football stadium sized crowd sing The Who song "Armenia, City in the Sky"- I think it would make a great anthem for Armenia, if Armenians didn't mind the weird contraction of their nation down to "city" size . . .

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 07:35 (twenty years ago)

I nominate "Anthem" by Rush. (Just before Sundar has a chance to.)

Le jour de gloire est arrivé
Contre nous de la tyrannie
L'étendard sanglant est levé
Entendez vous dans les campagnes,
Mugir ces féroces soldats?
Ils viennent jusque dans nos bras
Egorger nos fils, nos compagnes!"

Ride! Ride Ride Ride. "Nowhere" is the fucking greatest fucking teen-angst classic in the fucking history of teen-angst classics, and if they hadn't squandered their credibility on late-period mod-worship I would have no reservations about calling them the fucking greatest fucking band in the fucking world. so great that i have to curse excessively to get my point across! "Seagull", "Kaleidescopes", "Polar Bear", and "Vapour Trail" (plus every other track on "Nowhere") and a more-than-honorable mention for "Leave Them All Behind." Okay, I've finished.

owen moorhead (i heart daniel miller), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

fifteen years pass...

This word has become inescapable - it tests well with radio listeners apparently

But right now I'm really drawn to absolutely over-the-top sledgehammer anthems that shake you to your fucking core, and hopefully have a live video or two showing fuck-off huge crowds heaving as one as the music rolls over them

What are your picks apart from 'Thunderstruck' by AC/DC obv

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 22:08 (five years ago)

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 05:11 (five years ago)

note that "whoas" can count offshoots of whoas, like ooooh, and whooooa-oooooh! and things like that

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 05:12 (five years ago)

Misfits - "Hatebreeders" has a bunch

Hatebreeders
Whoa oh oh

Hatebreeders

Hatebreeders
Whoa oh oh

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 05:13 (five years ago)

whatever it is, though, when it comes to anthems i'm looking for whoas, the most populist of utterances, the one that paul mccartney turns to endlessly at the end of hey jude

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 05:14 (five years ago)

I think you'll find it's spelled "woah"

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 08:14 (five years ago)

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 19:35 (five years ago)

In all seriousness, the Ruts “West One (Shine on Me)”.

Yeah good call!!

brimstead, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:04 (five years ago)

Corey Hart - Sunglasses at Night

And another 😎

brimstead, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:05 (five years ago)

I'd never actually heard Van Halen 3, so I went ahead and listened to the first 2 tracks.
The first one is anticlimactic!!
The second one sounds *exactly* like 'Balance' but with slightly more of a Red Hot Chili Peppers influence. If nobody told me they'd changed singers I probably wouldn't even notice.
I don't feel any need to hear the rest of it.

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:13 (five years ago)

lol I was nominating it as your anticlimactic album for that reason

it's just....there

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:15 (five years ago)

"The most unnecessary music you've ever heard" :)

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:17 (five years ago)

listen to "How Many Say I", which features EVH singing.

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:21 (five years ago)

Will do. Irl lol at how pointless this record is

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:23 (five years ago)

OMG dying

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:35 (five years ago)

I don't think i can make it to the end of the song

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:36 (five years ago)

Gonna try

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:36 (five years ago)

Made it! Speechless.

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:42 (five years ago)

coulda been an ok song had he not sung it, tho...not at its length!

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:44 (five years ago)

Yeah, that track took quite a number of surprising wrong turns.

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:12 (five years ago)

It's like, once his vocal comes in all bets are off.

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:14 (five years ago)

This could have been Right Now's little brother maybe, or someone's high school graduation song.

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:19 (five years ago)
