Los Angeles this weekend?

I'm heading from Houston to LA this weekend to visit friends, sit out Hurricane Rita and catch the Dead Can Dance show on Sunday.

I have three nights to kill; what are some good dance spots in LA? Is there any place to hear microhouse, electrohouse, techno, etc? I'm down for pretty much anything except "eclectic hipster" nights.

jeffery (jeffery), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

I can't help you then.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

haha!

huell howser (chaki), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

well, not that this helps you, but tonight james murphy is spinning at the montmartre lounge and playing with some apparently sub-interpol band and peaches playing emcee. it's a party for the relaunch of bpm magazine. it's still shit, but should be a fun night. you can rsvp through http://www.flavorpill.com

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Dead Can Dance, waaah. I miss LA, I miss H'wood Bowl.

Thea (Thea), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

We already did this. LA doesn't have electrohouse events.

P.S. goddam do 'eclectic hipster' events frustrate me x 10000000

tylero (tylero), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

Why exactly?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Thanks Tylero.

jeffery (jeffery), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

Why exactly?

uh oh!

Lil' Skip, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

Because I can dj about 100000x better than them but they won't book me because my haircut suxxxx ;)

tylero (tylero), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

I'm actually kind of kidding. I usually have tons and tons of fun at 'eclectic hipster' events. I just wish those (fun, good-looking) crowds would turn up at my pure techno/tech-house/electro events (never gonna happen though)

tylero (tylero), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

I wish they would too, but yeah, the music selection is pretty conservative. I actually like it when Peaches or someone else DJs because they'll play the obvious new stuff that works and people are all "wow" etc. It's a party-focused as opposed to a music focused scene.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

The feeling I get when dancing at an "eclectic hipster" event reminds me of the way I felt when I went to the roller rink in the fourth grade. I never could skate worth a crap.

jeffery (jeffery), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

Instead our events are filled with dwindling numbers of (ugly, poorly dressed) rave die-hards on too much drugs.

tylero (tylero), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

I mean, the hipster songs themselves aren't conservative, but they keep going with the same hits (new, ironic, classic etc) over and over which is annoying for something that should be much more shambolic. I think it would make for better "parties" too.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

Instead our events are filled with dwindling numbers of (ugly, poorly dressed) rave die-hards on too much drugs.

See ya there!

jeffery (jeffery), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

what are eclectic hipster parties?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

xpost, yeah, anytime I go to a club night that's really music focused, the crowd is always odd. For instance, I love Marques Wyatt, but the crowds he draws are often kind of cheesy fancy.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

I'd love to do a pop night somewhere. Arthur and I were talking about it (like a Freaky Trigger west or something). Nobody would probably come, but we could FAP and laugh.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

x-post Jefferey you should have been here a couple of weeks ago for Interface13: http://droidbehavior.com/photo/view_album.php?set_albumName=interface13&page=1

tylero (tylero), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

Peaches is eclectic when? Did Chris Douridas get lucky?

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

There should be a gallery/music party on Saturday in Hollywood, I'll repost the details when I get them. Also, my friend is having a BBQ at this great house in Echo Park which should be crazy (pics from the last one: http://www.thecobrasnake.com/partyphotos/thirdof/index.html).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

for something that should be much more shambolic

make that- for somethat should be much more optimo.

the more eclectic the better in my opinion, though when everything works together that's obviously preferred. i generally get bored at nights that are genre-centric, unless it's areal-y or filthy dirty bassdiscohouse or whatever you would call that lindstromish brand of house.

i throw my own eclecticish night and what's even more frustrating than being asked/expected to play some hipster standard thing is when you play something that is either similar, led to, or derived from those same songs that SHOULD WORK but doesn't. many dance problems stem from homophobia/skepticism about dance music?

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

xpost - Hi Donut, yes she spins good music (electro/micro house mixed in with hipster stuff).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

UNITED STATES OF ELECTRONICA TONIGHT AT CINESPACE PEOPLE!!

huell howser (chaki), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

Donut that is a funny joke but most poeple won't get it, these days.

Thea (Thea), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

Chaki, I was totally planning on going (have enjoyed the disc Donut hooked me up with, actually), but I've got a cold and am probably not up for it.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

yah well they arnt even headlining. they have to play inbetween new dim mak sweethearts :( they killed it last night at knitting factory but there wasnt really many people there!

huell howser (chaki), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

UNITED STATES OF ELECTRONICA TONIGHT AT CINESPACE PEOPLE!!

Didn't they play last night at Knitting Factory? Or am I remembering that wrong?

DCD on Sunday, what to do...

Ummm, I would attend/participate in something like this.

"i throw my own eclecticish night and what's even more frustrating than being asked/expected to play some hipster standard thing is when you play something that is either similar, led to, or derived from those same songs that SHOULD WORK but doesn't."

Yep, I hear ya. The last time I DJed I put on the K&T mix of Maurice's 'This Is Acid' and I was so sure it was gonna make the place go off . . . and it totally killed the dancefloor. Who won't dance to Maurice? That's foolishness.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 07:43 (twenty years ago)

Drew, I have also dropped this exact mix with similar results! I think it's maybe a "big-room" record (that synth sound)?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

I'd love to do a pop night somewhere. Arthur and I were talking about it (like a Freaky Trigger west or something). Nobody would probably come, but we could FAP and laugh.

I'd probably be down for this - the only place I can ever hear the kind of stuff I like is when I put together CDs for friends' parties and such.

Feast of San Gennaro at the Grove 9/23-9/25
an Italian food and culture fest that's free admission(donation suggested, it's put on by Jimmy Kimmel's charity organization).
From the flyer it looks like Kimmel, Adam Corolla, and Dom Deluise will be there but don't let that stop you! I'm not going, just saying.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

what is electro hipster?

t-rex, Saturday, 24 September 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

I never made it to LA this weekend; all flights out of IAH were cancelled from Friday afternoon through Saturday morning. My flight was Friday night. Effin' hurricanes. :(

Ellen Allien is DJing a Native Instruments event at Avalon Saturday night...

jsoulja (jsoulja), Saturday, 1 October 2005 08:34 (twenty years ago)

Also, stay away from cheese-ball Hollywood clubs like Star Shoes. This is the exchange my friend and I heard earlier tonight that sent us for the door:

Hipster Guy in b/w stripe French sailor shirt w/blonde spike-y hair and facial growth is tapped on the shoulder by Electroclash girl.

Girl: Hey, I'm sorry, but you look like my friend Luke...

Guy: Really? I'll bet my hair is better, though....

See- it's just like you imagine.....

jsoulja (jsoulja), Saturday, 1 October 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

surely this weekend...

In fact, just avoid people in general.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 7 October 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

I stand by Star Shoes on Wednesdays. Definitely not a well laid-out place, but a fun night.
