Plush: C/D?

Drag City/Domino act Plush, aka Liam Maher. Two singles and an Albini-recorded all-piano LP. Cameo in High Fidelity. Eccentric genius or lazy bastard?

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I once saw him attempt to play the piano LP on acoustic guitar. It was one of the most bizarre and enchanting gigs I've seen.

Once at a Stereolab gig in Melbourne, Liam came out and played guitar on the final song. In the height of inebriation, I yelled out "Liam, you're a legend", which got a smile. He remembered it when I spoke to him later (by being a fanboy and getting him to sign some rekkids).

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He's due another record surely. More You Becomes You is ok but doesn't meet the majesty of Found A Little Baby which is a stunning track.

mms, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The 7" was the first and last time I ever buy a record Mojo says is "classic pop". The album I bought cheap and actually quite enjoy (saying this I can't remember a single thing about it except I got quite a good 'vibe' from it).

Tom, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought this was a Stone Temple Pilots thread. I almost shit my pants with disgust.

Poops McGee, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Found A Little Baby is a great record, if not a great song. The follow up, No Education was also fantastic, if even more um decrepit. The LP is an admirable piece of work, but not as likeable as I wanted it to be. He's really not the "classic songwriter" everybody thinks he is (he's closer to Will Oldham than Laura Nyro). The best thing about the LP is the size of the dead wax on side one (about 8" diameter). Genius. His live shows a few years back consited of side one of the LP followed by side two of the LP followed by the singles. Also genius. The he encored with Witchi Tai To. GEEEEEENNNNNNIIIIIIUUUUUUSSSSSS. He's playing All Tomorrow's parties this year. Might be worth it.

Oh, & his name is Liam HAYES.

harvey williams, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Stone Temple Pilots song "Plush" is a better Pearl Jam song than anything Pearl Jam themselves ever did.

Sean, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There's some great ad I have on a tape thanks to my 1993-era MST3K capturing on video, featuring clips of that ridiculous video for "Plush" interspersed with Batman-like word graphics -- "DOUBT," "FEAR," "ANXIETY." There's your grunge.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Another reason why STP were better than PJ is that STP was just a pop band pretending to be grunge, whereas PJ was sincere. Blech.

Sean, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

STP AND PEARL JAM. THE NEXT VH1 "WHERE ARE THEY NOW" SPECIAL. WELL WE ALL KNOW WHERE SCOTT WEILAND WILL BE.

Poops McGee, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

there's an interview with Liam Hayes in a japanese magazine that came out a month or two ago that says that he went broke putting his new record together ($20k or something), and that drag city passed on it...

or maybe my translation sucks! but i'm pretty sure his record (like o'rourke's) will be out in japan well before the USA.

http://gygax.pitas.com, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't believe I called him Liam Maher. D'oh!

$20k to record an LP? "More You Becomes You" sounds like it was recorded for $100.

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

four years pass...
what happened to this guy "plush"?
did he become like jeff magnum, wandering around the streets with no target to aim to?
i guess the coclusion of he's story is, if you wanna make "the citizen kane/titanic" mega-record,give up, or find yourself going down the drain.

fellini, Tuesday, 21 February 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

i don't know.

has anyone heard "underfed"? how is it compared to the 'proper' version?

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

i've actually only heard underfed--can't afford the expensive fed import... a ysi, perhaps? anyway I like underfed, though the mix is strange in parts. maybe that's intentional? good songs, interesting vocals--maybe not the "masterpiece" it's been made out by some to be, but it's worth seeking out.

Tyler W (tylerw), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 23:59 (nineteen years ago)

As much as I like that first 7", I can't be the only one who thinks it sounds a lot like Wings ("My Love" etc.)?

drench, Wednesday, 22 February 2006 02:53 (nineteen years ago)

harvey talked about the fugu album a long time ago, i wonder if it is ever coming out.

keyth (keyth), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 04:24 (nineteen years ago)

The new Fugu album is already out in France and Japan; I guess it'll be issued in other markets if anyone wants it. Just a reminder; it's a terrific record, probably my favourite of last year. His website's here:
www.fugumusic.com
As for Plush; I saw Liam play a solo show in London last spring, which was made up almost entirely of new songs. I guess they'll be recorded/released when he feels like it. Let's hope it isn't such a painfully prolonged gestation period as that for Fed.

harvey.w (harvey.w), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

He just played NYC in Nov. so he's defintely around even if keeping a low profile. He was pretty good, sort of what I expected - as Harvey says it seemed to be mostly new stuff as I didn't recognize that much. He had a real Nilsson vibe, I thought, which hadn't occured to me before although it might have been there all along.

TRG (TRG), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

I was home alone for a few hours last night and, among other things, played the "No Education" 45 for the first time in awhile -- so good.

Procrastination-fueled googling of Liam Hayes/Plush today shows he apparently has a new album out this spring, a new website (http://www.liamhayesandplush.com/), and a new video on YouTube(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nz9QZTuMeMA)! Sounds far from No Education, but definitely in the direction he'd been heading with Fed. I like it quite a bit on first listen.

city worker, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:59 (seventeen years ago)

looks like you can download Fed for cheap over at Other Music ... http://digital.othermusic.com/search/?t=artist&s=Plush&releases ...

tylerw, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:08 (seventeen years ago)

It's been years since I've thought about this guy. I'll have to pull out the More You and the singles tonight. It's the kind of mood I'm in, anyway.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:12 (seventeen years ago)

I noticed Fed on the Other Music download site, too...damn, it doesn't pay to buy those expensive Japanese imports anymore...

can't wait to hear the new stuff...

henry s, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:14 (seventeen years ago)

i think i prefer underfed - i find a lot of the arrangements in fed really heavy and they seem to drag the tunes down a bit..

electricsound, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:46 (seventeen years ago)

OTM. Underfed is lighter on it's feet. Fed a little studio frozen.

new album 'bright penny' out next week apparently

electric sound of jim (original version) (electricsound), Friday, 25 September 2009 11:19 (sixteen years ago)

It's good. Plush clearly neither C nor D, but strong second divisioon.

ithappens, Friday, 25 September 2009 11:30 (sixteen years ago)

is the numero group putting this out?

new album 'korp sole roller' under his own name. some really nice tunes on this one, particularly 'rock and roll'. feels a bit fresher than the last one

I love Found A Little Baby, totally forgot how awesome that is.

Had no idea he had a new album out. Fed is one of my favourite albums of all time.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 13 August 2014 02:45 (eleven years ago)

New album is fantastic. Thinking of seeing him live in Chicago next month.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 14 August 2014 01:08 (eleven years ago)

four weeks pass...

Going thru a phase w him right now.

Great summary of his career online w Uncut:

@JohnRMulvey: "One way to make a duck salute..." An attempt to tell the long, strange story of Liam Hayes & Plush: http://t.co/ULoNv5AXOR

He can be frustrating but there's always this aspect of "unrealized potential" I am drawn to about him.

Naive Teen Idol, Friday, 12 September 2014 12:59 (eleven years ago)

Great article. This guy deserves way more attention than he gets.

Going to see him on Monday. No idea what stuff he will do, I would love to hear Found a Little Baby but don't want to get my hopes up.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 12 September 2014 14:14 (eleven years ago)

At the end of the day, he doesn't have a ton of songs – maybe 30? So I wouldn't be surprised if he busted it out.

One song I really fell for over the last week is "If I Could" from Bright Penny. It's a great blue-eyed soul number with just an awesome sense of atmosphere and feel.

Another one from the latest record is "The Sane Society" – which may be the most straightforward pop tune he's written (with a contorted lyric or course).

Awesome tunes, both.

Naive Teen Idol, Friday, 12 September 2014 21:44 (eleven years ago)

new record on bandcamp is sounding very nice. i actually always wanted to like this dude a little more than I do -- something kind of abrasive about the stuff I've heard that turned me off a little bit. but this one isn't giving me that vibe.

tylerw, Friday, 12 September 2014 21:56 (eleven years ago)

Have you heard his first album More You Becomes You? It's quite different from his other albums. It's really mellow and understated as it's just him and the piano. It's as faraway as abrasive as you can get. It's a really beautiful record.

Would love to see him do it. He must know it's a lot of people's favourite song of his.

Bright Penny is probably his weakest album for me but still some great moments on there.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 13 September 2014 02:45 (eleven years ago)

more you.. is far and away my favourite of his albums, but i think korp sole roller is now not far behind. keen to hear what the fat possum deal brings for him

a cheese has occurred (electricsound), Saturday, 13 September 2014 03:30 (eleven years ago)

Fed is still my favourite and one of my 50 favourite albums ever but he's yet to make a bad album. Korp Sole Roller just keeps getting better.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 13 September 2014 20:26 (eleven years ago)

four months pass...

New album out today. This guy has the strangest gaps between albums. It's gone from seven years to to seven months.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 13 January 2015 16:12 (ten years ago)

Yeah, bought this yesterday but have yet to listen. Looking forward to it though. Great packaging / booklet.

Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Tuesday, 13 January 2015 16:57 (ten years ago)

Still waiting for his last album to be properly released. It's still only available for $30 on import.
