The meshing guitars. The voice that sounds like a thousand years. Thalia Zedek and Chris Brokaw. I love them to bits.

i dont know what you are talking about but Prince's Come is in my top 3 fav P joints.

chaki, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I love Come. Thalia Zedek's album "Been Here and Gone" is excellent, if you haven't heard it. Saw her play live last year touring the solo album and it was a great show. Opening was Tara Jane O'Neil who was also good, so have been exploring her music: Retsin, The Naysayer. There were only a handful of people at that show, which made me very embarassed for Seattle...

Ron Hudson, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Put on a great show when I saw them in 1993, they did. A lot better than Superchunk, who came after. Ended up having dinner with them as well -- personable folks, though Zedek was very withdrawn. Her girlfriend was a talkative, intelligent sort, though!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Saw them in the Borderline around August 92. Great gig -- messy as fuck. Eleven:Eleven is one of the best LP's amongst the grunge onslaught of that year. It's the voice that does it really. I loved the Car and Fast Piss Blues singles as well. Never bothered with the second album simply because it was Oct 94 they seemed pointless by then. Context context, bloody context, the killer of good content!! Stupid of me really but some day I'll get round to getting it.

David G is OTM. 'Sad Eyes' especially great. I never really associated them with grunge - 11:11 feels more like a modern blues album and the sprawling, wandering structure is something to get lost in. A dark, dark record.

Dr. C, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris Brokaw is now in Evan Dando's new band.

factman, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got that "Gently Down the Stream" lp, and it's good.

Sean, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am also disappointed that this thread isn't about the Prince album, which is marvelous and underrated.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris Brokaw is also a member of the New Year (featuring the Bedhead brothers).

David Raposa, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Quite right. It's his industrial/pop/funk album, if anything, and damn it's good.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what little Come I've heard has gotten my attention. is there a particular album that's the best place to start, any to avoid

al, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The first album was great, a 90's answer to N. Young's Zuma... I bought that in Portland and put it in the trunk of the girl's car... by the time I'd arrived in California, it was horribly warped... I followed somebody's advice and put the record in the paper sleeve between two heavy pieces of glass on a stool outside, in the sunshine... it flattened out and sounded fine, if not perfect. Anyone else ever fixed a fucked-up record in this fashion?

Andy, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Coming Spring 2002 from 12XU will be the full-length solo debut from Chris Brokaw, 'Red Cities' (12XU 010-2). One of the most inventive guitarists on the planet, Brokaw's playing has graced recordings by Pullman, Steve Wynn, Empty House Cooperative and the band he co-founded, Boston's Come. In addition to drumming on The New Year's recent debut album, Brokaw has been playing guitar this autumn for Clint Conley's as-yet-unnamed new band.

'Red Cities', only available in Europe via 12XU (North American release details are pending), is an instrumental, guitar-heavy recording that is simply staggering in terms of stylistic range and emotional power. Those who have heard Chris Brokaw's playing with Come over the years will not be disappointed --- though even longtime fans might be surprised at how devestating his first solo album turns out. If you're not inclined to wait a few months, a split EP featuring 2 tracks by Chris and 2 tracks by the Spanish duo Viva Las Vegas has just been issued on the Acuarela label."

andy: you can apparently do it in the oven with a couple pieces of 1/4 inch tempered glass, but the temperature is very important. Too hot and it doesn't work right. I've tried a couple times with less-than-stellar results. but look here for more info:

ten years pass...

So classic. Those guitars shoot out the lights and tear down everything. "German Song" floors me every time.

Mule, Saturday, 22 September 2012 10:34 (thirteen years ago)

top ten band of the 90's for me. i like them so much more than anything else on matador. probably the only band from the 90's where i own every record on vinyl too.

scott seward, Saturday, 22 September 2012 15:08 (thirteen years ago)

Was about to repeat my comment near the top about that 1993 show. Standout track would have been "Car" that night.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 22 September 2012 20:20 (thirteen years ago)

The second Come album was always my favorite one; maybe cuz it was the first one I ever heard, I dunno. Anyway the others never quite big for me. Was it "Don't Ask Don't Tell"? Yeah.

I've heard some Brokaw solo but can barely remember it. (New Year exceptrd: they were GREAT.) Never got around to Zedek's solo stuff, sadly.

Why did they break up, anyway?

Raymond Cummings, Sunday, 23 September 2012 01:41 (thirteen years ago)

First is my favorite, but I've only heard that one and Gently Down the Stream.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Sunday, 23 September 2012 01:50 (thirteen years ago)

I really like everything I've heard, but I guess maybe the third is the weakest of the bunch. "Don't Ask.." is flaweless, but I love "Gently Down.." as well. It was the first one I heard, and I remember "Recidivist" hitting really hard from the get-go.

Would have loved to see them live.

Mule, Sunday, 23 September 2012 10:03 (thirteen years ago)

I saw them in Brooklyn last year and the show was fantastic!

I'm not really such a big fan of reunion tours and whatnot. Might make an exception for Come though.

Fuck it! Ticket bought - thanks for the heads up WWM!

Thalia's voice sounds a little shot on those clips, but those guitars still sound flat-out amazing to me. Love these folks forever.

Bumping this for Brits who might have missed it last night - see upthread news of Come show at Dingwalls on 23 May.

Last time TZ played London was a Sunday night at Corsica Studios. There can't have been more than 50 people there - heartbreaking. She and her band were fantastic.

Supposed Former ILM Lurker (WeWantMiles), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 10:12 (twelve years ago)

Is that bad? I saw Strapping Fieldhands a year or so ago in NYC and the crowd was basically me, my girlfriend, a few others and the opening bands. I've seen worse is all.

Evan, Wednesday, 13 March 2013 13:37 (twelve years ago)

Aye, maybe so. Still, it's a long way to come from the US to England to play to that many people.

Supposed Former ILM Lurker (WeWantMiles), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 13:42 (twelve years ago)

Indeed. Hopefully wasn't the only stop!

Evan, Wednesday, 13 March 2013 13:59 (twelve years ago)

I must admit, I've been a bad fan of Zedek post-Come - haven't heard any of the solo albums, only seen her live just the once.

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 14:02 (twelve years ago)

saw come just lay waste to the black cat in dc opening for sleater-kinney in like 97. amazing band.

adam, Wednesday, 13 March 2013 14:07 (twelve years ago)

These two amazing shows popped up in the last few months. One of the earliest shows I've seen (prior to any releases), and then the final show (pre-reunion) with Arthur and Sean:
