Has any of yous come across this alleged 7"bottleg single of Paul Stanley's live banter? Does it really exist?

peepee (peepee), Monday, 26 September 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

It exists, I gather, but I have yet to hear it. Which bugs me, as I must.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 September 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

I. MUST. HEAR. THIS!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 26 September 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

oh my god, a famous person talking on stage. i gotta have this.

richard wood johnson, Monday, 26 September 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

At least it's not a whole album of Elvis banter:

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Monday, 26 September 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Yeah but I've always wanted to hear that.

"England loves you?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 September 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

oh my god, a famous person talking on stage. i gotta have this.

You're obviously unfamiliar with Paul Stanley's spectacularly idiotic stage banter.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 26 September 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

The real question here is how it compares to the Venom single.

Keith C (lync0), Monday, 26 September 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

IT EXISTS, I HAVE HEARD IT, AND IT RULES.

It's fantastic. Having Fun With Stanley on Stage is something I have wanted my own copy of for years now, as a search through the ILX archives will attest. In fact, this is stupid; I'm going to email my friend Gravy and have her digitize the damned thing for me.

(damn, I shoulda capitalized!)

peepee (peepee), Monday, 26 September 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

I've actually heard an entire 90-minute tape comprised of NOTHING but Paul Stanley's stage "banter." Paul's voice is not only surprisingly high, but he has a noticeable lisp, which tends to undercut the badassitude of some of his comments. The other sad/hilarious thing about the tape is that it was apparently compiled chronologically, so that by the end of it he's saying things like, "Thith may not be the biggetht crowd we ever played to, but itth damn sure the loudetht! Yayeah!"

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 26 September 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

There are three or four volumes of Having Fun With Elvis On Stage now. Some Dutch bootleg label "reissued" the original, then started compiling sequels, a few years ago. At one point you could get 'em through Collectors' Choice Music, but I don't know if that's still the case and I never bothered.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 26 September 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

I patiently await a YSI of Stanley's golden god smacktalk here.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 September 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

The infamous recording of Venom's onstage banter is great fun.

a. begrand (a begrand), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 04:00 (twenty years ago)

I still want to hear "The Relaxation of the Asshole," Bob Pollard's own "Having Fun With..." I saw them live on their final tour, and if he tells anywhere near as many people to suck his dick on the album as he did in October, I'll be satisfied.

owen moorhead (i heart daniel miller), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 04:08 (twenty years ago)

heard there was a Neil Young bootleg of nothing but stage banter out there. Jeff Tweedy mentioned it once in an interview.

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 6 October 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

I did the compilation CD for the fmu fundraiser of between song banter (which I was querying about on that old thread before I compiled it in March) -- I put some Paul stanley on there; confused about where he was in Pennsylvania. I don't think it's from that 7" though. Love to hear that one though - can trade for some other banter if interested.

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Friday, 7 October 2005 01:59 (twenty years ago)

There's some funny Neil stuff from the Shocking Pinks tour where has some guy onstage between sets just giving weather, interviewing neil's roadies, photographers, audience members, and showing like rin tin tin movies. it's very surreal.

Jeezis - it's awesome.

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Saturday, 4 February 2006 00:20 (nineteen years ago)

Holy heck, Bobby, thank you for calling this to my attention, I must have missed this on Friday.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 February 2006 06:26 (nineteen years ago)

"Paul Stanley needs no introduction. Every fucking song at a Kiss live show, however, seems to need one, a completely inane overly-rehearsed one at that, and some mad genius out there has finally made a CD-length compilation of some of the gems in the Paul Stanley Crowd Interaction canon. My good friend Dave Viola, who’s been obsessed with Stanley’s on-stage patter for countless years, tipped me off to this one — he’s the one who pointed out to me that Stanley, in-between songs on-stage, sounds less like the frontman for an internationally known rock megaband than a shrill Christopher Street queen stuck outside a club at three in the morning, frantically searching on the wet pavement for the last few poppers that accidentally flew out of his hand onto the ground. The ZIP file below of 70 tracks’ worth of Stanley shenanigans has already been posted elsewhere on the web, but it’s good to get this kind of stuff as much exposure as possible." - Bret B. of http://postpunkjunk.com/

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Monday, 6 February 2006 06:34 (nineteen years ago)

This is AMAZING. I listened to the whole thing in one sitting on Friday. There's a subtlety in the artistry of the track sequencing... there are all sorts of layered callbacks, with the varying "Cold Gin" intros and the "we haven't played this one of this tour yet, Pittsburgh!"

The most amazing track has to be the "How many girls out there like to get LICKED?! And how many GUYS out there like to get licked?! You lick me, I'll lick you!" monologue.

Thanks, Bobby - almost always with this sort of thing, it's more fun to hear about it than to actually hear it, but this is just a solid masterpiece through and through.

"ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLRIGHT...TORONTO!!!!! YOU FEEL GOOD??? Cause if we try hard enough we're gonna GET THIS PLAAAACE...I SAY WE GONNA GET THIS PLAAAACETH...HOTTER THAN HELLgaspgulp..."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 February 2006 06:47 (nineteen years ago)

Fans of this splendid recording may also enjoy the last hour and a half of this release, in which the Mother Superior guys force Rollins to go to his first Kiss concert, and he falls in love with Paul's spiels, Gene's flying and The Cat's rendition of Beth, solo, to backing tape.

kit brash (kit brash), Monday, 6 February 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

This is possibly the most inane thing I have ever heard. Best part: clearly recorded off the soundboard, by professionals. Which leads me to the question - what did Stanley do to piss off the soundman at the Toronto arena so badly?

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 6 February 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

Probably exist.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 February 2006 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE THAT LIKES TO GET HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGH!?!?!?!

One of many beautiful moments.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

This is hardly just the Toronto show, there are lots of shows where this comes from.. this is a pissed off touring soundman, apparently. (That said, I admit to thinking the incidental musical bits sounded great!.. especially when pieced together a la the Venom dialogues.. like they were pre-Wire fragments or something)

Dom iNut (donut), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

May I offer Adam Woodrow's "The Love Theme From Kiss (Larger Than Life)" from Vermiform's Fear of Smell compilation:

I'm sitting here listening to Dynasty. I know that's not the album playing right now, but some people call that their disco album ... but their real fans know different. Not the kids who collect baseball cards and Kiss shit. I'm talking about those of us who hoped their parents would die in a car crash or something so they could be adopted. Maybe by Gene or Paul or Ace or Peter. I wanted to kill that little piece of shit Adam Rich: it said in Tiger Beat he was Gene's number one fan -- that was so fucking unfair. Just because he's a celebrity? Fuck him. I'm talking about losers from Queens and New Jersey and Long Island who defended Kiss when Van Halen was supposedly king. Kids who later dropped out of high school to work at their fathers' plumbing supply store. Cheesy chocolate milk moustaches and faded transfer t-shirts and work boots (unlaced of course). Girls with big asses and poofy hair and roach clip feather earrings who still wear leg warmers: these are true Kiss fans. Fans who would take the time to write into Creem or Rip to defend Paul. How dare they say Paul's a fag? Kiss is the greatest rock and roll band in the world. How could he be a fag, then, tell us. Kiss isn't a joke to look back on, they weren't a phase, they were the whole fucking world, they weren't an escape because they were my entire reality.

having fun with stockholm cindy on stage (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 6 February 2006 22:12 (nineteen years ago)

The best part of the whole tape is a very subtle moment where he's like "you gotta help out if you know the words, and if you don't...wow." The utter disappointment in his voice when he considers the possibility that someone might not have memorized the lyrics to "I Want You" is truly awesome.

The best part of the whole tape is a very subtle moment where he's like "you gotta help out if you know the words, and if you don't...wow."

Actually, I think he's saying "why?" instead of "wow", which makes it even more incoherent, and therefore greater.

This is the greatest Kiss related thing ever (though Jon Wurster's live tweets of Criss's autobio are a close second).

My favorite is actually Gene yelling what I for the longest time thought was "PITCH-BACK!!!" and I for the life of my could not figure out what he was really saying until it went off like a light one day when I was listening to it. He's saying "Pittsburgh".

I remember on the Crazy Nights tour (87? 88?), which I assume was around Thanksgiving, or maybe not, who knows, it's a logic-free zone at a KISS show, PS had this bizarre Thanksgiving rant which featured the culminating line, "And I SAID to her, I got the right STUFFING for your BIRD."
