The return of Kevin Shields

Kev's back, with a track "outro" on a forthcoming Geographic Records compilation. This is what Stephen Pastel has to say:

"Kevin Shields always plays music in a really unegotistical way and everything he does just feels right; nothing's contrived or over-stated, which is one of the reasons why MBV music has been so enduring. At the moment he's rebuilding his studio and planning a Kevin Shields album and a new My Bloody Valentine album (to be recorded when they're all in their 40s). "

So, what are people expecting from this track? And does anyone truly believe there will be another Valentines LP? And aren't they all very nearly 40 anyway?

New "boring title, probably instrumental, d'oh" answers

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm tired of the "intros" and "outros" Mr. Shields contributes to various art installations, music compilations, and... chipmunk tea parties. It's quite clear by now that the well hath run dry for Mr. Shields. Still there's all this talk about a new MBV album. Shields keeps hinting at these future albums, seemingly just to keep his "genius" label intact. There's no denying, at least in my book, that 'Loveless' is an AMAZING accomplishment, but I stopped waiting for the new MBV back in 1994 (or was it 1993) when it was promised... I think there's going to be nothing but a series of intros and outros and no simple "tros" from Shields in the coming years/decades. "Map Ref 41N 93W" should have been a telling sign that things would never be the same.

If that's the last full song, there are worse ways to go, though. And as it is, "We Have All the Time in the World" was a beaut.

My earlier virulent frustration is now a gentle warm calm wait. I am patient. It will happen.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"We Have All the Time in the World" was a beaut.
Maybe even their best song. Only problem it is not theirs. It is John Barry's.

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Tainted Love" wasn't Soft Cell's song either.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've heard it. It's a wee nothing of an instrumental, though with lovely guitar sound--a variation of the intro the Pastels did for the same record.

Those remixes he did for Primal Scream and Mogwai a couple of years ago are sooooo good, though.

Douglas, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, Ned, but they made it their own.

helenfordsdale, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I know, Helen -- that's my point. :-) I'd rather hear MBV's take than the original Louis Armstrong version -- or Iggy Pop's, for that matter.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Haven't you heard, he's 2/3rd done with the next MBV record.

Its gonna be called About Bloody Time..

Lord Custos, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No no, it's The Complete Sessions. It'll be the size of the Merzbox.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i think it will be interesting to see what old sheildsey comes up with. he seemed to be one of the more daring producers of the 90s, so one would guess his style would change pretty drastically over ten years... only time will tell.

tyler, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"We Have All the Time in the World" = proof that Kevin & co. could actually have morphed quite nicely across into a pop-end post-rock game, and right at the cusp of that wave; "We Have All the Time in the World" + Kevin's jungle leanings somewhere in there = potential late-period-Stereolab-type record (except better) somewhere in the mid 90s; all that + Kevin's speed-metal fixation somewhere in there = potential Emperor Tomato Ketchup + speed metal! type thing, which oooooo imagine a swanky late-90s post-rock band with breakbeats plus a metal influence!

Nitsuh, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

heh...so it would actually be EMPEROR Tomato Ketchup.

(someone stop me.)

jess, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That sounds awful.

Sean, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The original "Map Ref" is up there -- like maybe #2 or #3 -- as one of my favorite songs, but I think MBV's version is pretty spectacular in its own right.

Andy K, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That sounds awful.

Oh, c'mon! A speed-metal "Metronomic Underground" would be the best best thing ever, ever. It's one of those ideas so good that I want to try and record it myself, just so I can hear it.

Nitsuh, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyone else note how painstakingly they recreated the guitars for both of those covers? The synth-strings in "We Have All The Time" must be from the same organ...and with all the muddy tracks Setve Nye loaded into 154 I'm just as amazed Shields was able to pull out and recombine his own guitars to create the same phasing in key moments of "Map Ref". His ears are unrivaled if he puts the hooka down long enough to work. ;)

Chris Ott, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Steve Nye? Obviously I was referring to Thorne, excuse me.

Chris Ott, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i am a lot more anxious for another Trash Can Sinatras album than MBV to be honest,,,

g, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

supposedly TCS is going in the studio this month but i'm not holding my breath...

g, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

NEW SHIELDS SHOCKAH: it's been long-discussed that Shields has recorded tons of material post-Loveless, and put it all up to the bulk-eraser because of dissatisfaction. Now, Shields has decided to release the tapes in the ultimate reaction to fan expections, kind of like a 4'33" for the modern age. True fans are expected to listen to this 8 CD set with the volume on full, trying to hear any blips at all emerging from the hiss. Doubtless, tomes will be written on the subject.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just wish the fat stoner would release something, anything. His quality control can't be that out of hand if some of his "less inspired" remixes are anything to go by.

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the fat stoner

Heh heh heh. He is the Buddha of pot, is he not? He looked sweetly comfortable on the Primal Scream tour.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

PRML SCRM = SXR!@#!@#!@#~

BBBY GLLSP = WNKR!@#!@#!@#~

(ps I really like "Loveless" & "Isn't Anything" even better but I think it will be a miracle if we ever hear from them again. Oh well)

Norman Phay, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

is he a smoker or a junkie? I always assumed that Heroin was his drug of choice.

mt, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Naaah, smack music is generally more minimalist. S3, VU, Trux - not really complex, multi-layered recordings..

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, definitely pot. MBV list members confirmed this in the occasional run-in with him on the Primal Scream tour.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

His work on Curve's "Gift" and the last Dinosaur Jr was pretty freakin' great. That MBV album that's rumored to be all Smashing Pumpkins covers, though, that's gonna hurt.

John Darnielle, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It would certainly be preferable to an album of Billy Corgan doing MBV covers.

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As both of these options sound like heaven on earth, clearly your pain is my gain.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Come now Ned and admit it. You only likes the Billy because him gots to play wif Bernard and the boys. Please say it's true. Even if it isn't. I'm begging you.

John Darnielle, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Initially I thought you meant Bernard Butler and I was scratching my head in confusion.

Anyway -- sorry, John. Got Gish in 1991, saw them at the Whiskey that year, loved and adored the Pumpkins ever since and think that Zwan is pretty damn good. You'll have to accept that and my Depeche love both, I'm afraid. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How could I love you any less? I am after all the only guy besides yourself who not only bought that Revenge album with Pineapple Face on it, but actually listened to it a whole bunch of times. With a straight face.

John Darnielle, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, but John -- I only ever got the "Pineapple Face" single, not the album. :-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Did anyone here like Kevin Shields' remix of Yo La Tengo's 'Autumn Sweater'? There were 3 remixes I knew of--Mu-ziq, Tortoise, and Kevin Shields all did one. The Mu-ziq one was my favorite of the three, though.

geeta, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ned.

i know for a fact that kevin shields hates you.

mad one, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

D'oh! I can't claim to know the guy, there was just the one interview, but if I ended up leaving a bad impression that's gotten worse over the years, then that's my goof. Ah well.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's not a very peace-loving attitude

In other news, the movie has been pushed back to 2015 while Coppola waits for the soundtrack to be completed...

it was kind of a dirty trick to include "Sometimes" by MBV next to those lifeless kevin shields snippets on the lost in translation soudtrack, don't ya think? talk about suffering in comparison. yeesh!

two years pass...
So Patti Smith read aloud her Coral Sea elegy for Robert Mapplethorpe at Queen Elizabeth Hall, London in June. She added musical accompaniment from Chan 'Cat Power' Marshall and Kevin Shields.

Here's a review:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/arts/critic/review/0,1169,1513315,00.html

an image of the stage:
http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/5811/kevin8xl.jpg

and a YSI of the performance.

In brief, Smith's reading is an acquired taste (I don't mind it, but I can see how others might), but Shields clearly still has it in him to make astonishing and transcendent music, and I'm baffled as to why he doesn't release more.

logged out regular SC, Wednesday, 14 September 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

He does, it's just in the background of Primal Scream records so ilmers avoid it.

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

Yes, but it's in the service of the Primal Scream project, which is great, but I still want to hear more from My Bloody Valentine.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

...and this piece with Patti Smith is definitely in that MBV vein, much more so than even his soundtrack work as 'Kevin Shields.'

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 September 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

So I was in NYC last summer, and my friends and I (2 girls, 2 guys) went to this Mexican restaurant in Long Island City after going to P.S. 1. The only people working in this place were a pack of girls who were all about 18-years-old and there were no other customers.
We order our food and start overhearing them all talking/whispering about this awesome show that's going to happen in the club downstairs later that night. Then some of their friends come in and they all start talking about how awesome the show is going to be and how they can't believe MY BLOODY VALENTINE will be playing at their restaurant!
The four of us are sitting at our table laughing at them a little bit and wondering just what the hell they're talking about.
Finally our waitress comes back over and we ask very politely about the show:
Waitress: My god! My Bloody Valentine is playing downstairs tonight!
Us: Wow that's great. [snicker]
Waitress: I am their biggest fan. I have all their albums burned. Do you know them?... OH! MY! GOD! ARE YOU THEM!?!? [squeals]
We all started laughing out loud at this point and she kind of sulked off. I still don't know if we missed the best show in Long Island City that night.

There's been almost no discussion the actual recording of "The Coral Sea"!

I finally listened to this all the way through ... it's incredible, 60 minutes of hazy guitar ambience, and Patti's chants blend in nicely so you don't have to try to understand the words if you don't want to. Damn. Now I gotta follow that up by listening to some Tim Hecker ...

'goodbye' from the lost in translation ost sounds a lot like a fripp song, i think 'bringing down the light'?, or something? it is nice.

i don't know though, i sometimes think he's in danger of having too trademark a sound. like i saw that jools holland had made a record with tom jones a while ago, and you know it's just going to be alternating tinkle tinkle tinkle WOAH WOOAH WOAH, two people just doing their thing. kevin's obviously a total genius and any sliver of his greatness would be good on its own, but i think my bloody valentine, with the melodies, and colm's drumming, bilinda singing etc - it's a pretty good vehicle for what he's doing.
