Did she add anything to the Fall and was her own band, the Adult Net, of any merit?

MarkH, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nowt and No.

Dr. C, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a-33, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Adult Net singles had the same bass player as The Fall, I suppose that is of merit- plonk plonk PLONK.

Peter Miller, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Did they? Who? I thought it was James Eller or Craig Gannon.

Dr. C, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a) Yes, a dash of glamour.
b) No idea.

stevo, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Some.
None.

Dave225, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I LOVE what she did for the FALL... "Frenz Experiemnt", "Extricate", and even when she came back for "Light User Syndrome"... She did some amazing stuff for THE FALL... On LIGHT USER... Brix and Julia Nagle make a great team..

Todd, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dr C, I don't know the name, but the bass on the Edie Sedgewick song is very Fall-like. Might not be true of the others, of which I can only remember Incense and Peppermints and a Shangri-Las song. I didn't know the originals at the time so they probably sounded better than they were. They used to be easily found in bargain buckets.

Peter Miller, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

there's a review of the Adult Net album Honey Tangle here.

Blimey, Van Dyke Parks.....

MarkH, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

she was a bit to look at at least

g, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought she was hot and played a mean rickenbacker 330. I like "Cruiser's Creek" a lot. Generally I like the earlier rekirds better tho'. The adult net were OK-ish I thoughtm, but not as good as the primitives or the darling buds, & NOWHERE NEAR as good as girls at our best if U like that indiepop/girlie vox sound (as I clearly do, eh)

Norman Phay, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

She looked a little like a lost Arquette sister and therefore added much.

dan, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
"waking up in the sun" is a gem of a song. though i dunno any other adult net songs sorry.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 18 January 2004 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought the album on the strength of the single, but haven't listened to it in years. I might go and put it on now for research purposes.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 18 January 2004 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Brix currently co-owns a clothes store in Rivington Street in London's Trendy Shoreditch.

suzy (suzy), Sunday, 18 January 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I did listen to it. It sounds like the Bangles. It's OK. I'd totally forgotten what it sounded like.

I thought it was James Eller or Craig Gannon.

Both of them. Gannon on guitar, Eller on bass.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 18 January 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Rent-a-Mancs in session work shocker!

suzy (suzy), Sunday, 18 January 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

She's awesome. But Adult Net were never really good. Not bad, you understand, but...they are to The Fall what Crime and The City Solution is to The Birthday Party, kinda. Does that make sense?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 18 January 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Although Adult Net weren't consistently good (Their high points were usually covers, like "Rebellious Jukebox" and "Incense and Peppermints"), I'd still buy a new Brix Smith solo album anyday...

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 19 January 2004 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
Well, if anyone's interested, I have all of Brix's Adult net singles and album "The Honey Tangle" on LP. I bought them between 1987 and 1990 and have taken care to keep them in good condition.

I like the singles much more than the full length album, the latter being overproduced and fairly boring. The photography and artwork is really beautiful, I must admit.

My favorite Adult Net song is "Fat Hell", with Brix reciting spoken word over The Fall's "Elves" being played backward.
One day I will transfer them to digital files, along with all the other old Fall Lp's and singles I've collected.

Funny how old I feel when I talk about this band! I was fifteen at my first show, apparently the worst Fall gig Brix ever played, and I haven't seen her perform live since. I'm kind of sad I missed the Light User Syndrome reunion, but it would be weird seeing her.

Yes, Brix made The Fall more poppy and accessible, but I think I would have had a harder time tracking down their earlier work if it wasn't for her influence and ability to make The Fall's message available to a wider audience.

Juliet, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 05:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to know her mom.

hstencil, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 05:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Brix and the Fall were great, because the Fall moulded her their way, and she added vocal variety. Adult Net showed what she's like left on her own, ie. unoriginal and with a tendency to bland out.

Baravelli. (Jake Proudlock), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to know her mom.

But did you go to her highschool?

three years pass...

WTF?! Who knew she put out an album this year?!

I just grabbed it from eMusic. One listen so far but it seems good!

cheeky, it's called neurotica...

Saxby D. Elder, Monday, 10 September 2007 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

A bit "mom-rock" maybe, but it's alright. Surely better than Juliana Hatfield.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 10 September 2007 23:46 (eighteen years ago)

does anyone know if a concert film of "kurious oranj" with the michael clarke performance/ ballet/ whatever exists? i've seen clips on various docs, like the leigh bowery "hidden lives" thing, but would like to see the whole thing.

jed_, Monday, 10 September 2007 23:53 (eighteen years ago)

i brought a ton of records to the record store for trade a couple of weeks ago and at the last minute i took my edie single back out and held on to it. i still love get around. probably my fave adult net b-side. l.a. is a great fall/brix b-side too. i love the whole brix era of the fall. cruisers creek to kurious orange is a fine slice of fall.

scott seward, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 00:03 (eighteen years ago)

agreed... I love the Brix era and I wouldn't trade in any of my Adult Net singles either!

One of you journalists ought to give her a break and write up her album. :-) I haven't seen or heard one thing about it yet outside of eMusic.

Seems downright newsworthy actually.

Saxby D. Elder, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 00:56 (eighteen years ago)

I think it's only an internet/digital release, don't think there's a physical version, which would account for it slipping through the cracks.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 01:43 (eighteen years ago)

Brix surely helped the Fall move on from one period to another. Some prefer the poppy Brix era - it was my entre to the Fall - but these days I find it's the stuff I listen to the least.

Adult Net wasn't a patch on The Fall. I believe there was a comp that came out in the last year or so.

Mr. Odd, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 02:44 (eighteen years ago)

I've kindof wondered that myself, Jed, about the Kurious Oranj. But I've never heard of one.

Bimble, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 03:17 (eighteen years ago)

I saw some excerpts from the ballet at (or shortly after) the time it was running so it had to have been filmed. I have not watched the Fall movie yet, is it in there? Would be great to see!

Adult Net wasn't a patch on The Fall.

btw, I don't think anyone (certainly not me) is attempting to compare the Fall and the Adult Net for quality or importance. (Adult Net might get a few points for brevity tho).

I have heard the post-Fall sessions that Brix did with Stephen Duffy in the mid-90's and THOSE were great, tho will probably not ever be released.

Strange that the industry is supposedly headed in the digital-only direction and then when someone who is actually of interest to people releases something this way, it gets ignored/slips through the cracks.

Saxby D. Elder, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 04:06 (eighteen years ago)

What Fall movie are you referring to? The Perverted By Language BIS is the only one I'm aware of and it only has stuff from the Perverted era and earlier.

Bimble, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 04:52 (eighteen years ago)

not sure, really... I downloaded one and haven't watched it yet. The film footage I saw was on the BBC (of the ballet).

I honestly don't think about the Fall too much anymore. I have about 20 (or is it really about 40?!) of their CDs and I kind of decided a long time ago not to spend quite so much money on them anymore.

I am more excited about a new Brix album, as you can see.

Saxby D. Elder, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 05:34 (eighteen years ago)

That 7 piece version of The Fall with Brix and Marcia Schofield was brilliant live, partially due to the female glamour element. Not my favourite period for records but a long way from the worst.

I used to quite like the Adult Net too and have, I think, three singles by them. Waking Up In The Sun used to sound good.

everything, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 07:22 (eighteen years ago)

that kurious oranj thing (with michael clark with no bottom in his trousers) was whistle test (or something similar) filmed specifically for the bbc, i think. my clip has mark ellen introducing it.

brix was on something on tv recently in her new role as boutique proprietor, judging or commenting on some aspiring designers first catwalk show. only caught the end.

koogs, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 10:23 (eighteen years ago)

classic for covering White Night by the Lines at least!

dan selzer, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

Brix has a knack for covers, methinks. I wouldn't rule out her having had some role in selecting Fall covers during her tenure there.

Saxby D. Elder, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

I think Brix rescued The Fall from disappearing up their own arses - I know people like "Perverted By Language", and I like some of it, but, Jesus, dreary penitential hairshirt-wearing indier-than-thou obscurantism or what? OK, "The Wonderful and Frightening World..." isn't great but "This Nation's Saving Grace" surely is...

Tom D., Tuesday, 11 September 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

Wonderful and Frightening World is pretty great!

dan selzer, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

Pretty great but not quite great

Tom D., Tuesday, 11 September 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah it is.

Prticulrly the CD/Cassette version.

(I'm leaving that bad typing in.)

Mark G, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

SEE ARR EEE EEE PEE

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

Wonderful & Frightening and Bend Sinister are only marginally less great than Nation's and all three are soaked in Brix.

Also BAZDAD/STATE COG/ANALYST = immortality

Well she's been appearing on one of Gok Wan's programmes on the same channel for a while now, so not that a big surprise. Was a bit weird the 1st time I saw her though (I'd missed the switch to fashion design).

Wandering Boy Poet, Monday, 2 September 2013 12:26 (twelve years ago)

The Fall's "Victoria" video was on TV the other day, I pointed out Brix to the kids, they were OMG and that.
