Had only heard "Squirrel song" (which btw has to be one of the funniest songs I have ever heard) I downloaded 1000 hurts and "Prayer to god" is also awesome, the rest I'm not so sure about. Seems a little bland on first listen.

So, are Shellac any good or what?

At Action Park is their best by far, check that out. some of their stuff drags a little bit but all their albums have their highlights and Action Park is by far the most consistently rocking. Their singles and Peel sessions are also pretty sweet, try and find those.

The Uranus 7" single which features the songs Wingwalker and Doris blew my mind when it came out. Those are two of their best songs and I like them both better than some of the stuff on At Action Park.

See them live and hear for yourself. They've awoken from their slumber and have played several shows this year. I imagine a new album is coming. I too love their singles and At Action Park. I have lots of great memories of their shows at unusual venues, like a comedy club with clowns and Rainbo Roller Rink with Fugazi, and a show in Logan Square Auditorium where they dressed in baseball outfits and cracked weird jokes about Canada. Assholes or not, they're actually pretty funny -- they even did some Three Stooges style comedy, dragging Trainer away from his kit while he strained to continue beating on something.

Yeah they're pretty incredible live, song-wise they play all their shit pretty spot on, but the stage banter, Q+A, and general performance is pretty amazing. Just watching Todd Trainer play drums is completely hypnotic.

Marc, your description of 1,000 Hurts is pretty spot on, part of why I've only listened to it all the way through maybe 10 times since it came out. Yeah, get At Action Park -- every full length since has been a shadow of it.

I haven't bothered with the singles as I don't have a turntable, but I'd LOVE to hear them.

1000 Hurts
Uranus
The Rude Gesture
Terraform
Split 7" w/ Mule
Varied OOP 7"s
The Futurist (the band effectively disown this, at least as a tangible product, but there are some really good riffs on it between all the radio static and flotsam)

They are possibly the only band I deem fit to be an obnoxious fanboy about on here or pretty much any other public forum for that matter.

agreed, for being a band of their size/fame/infamy they are remarkably mellow and easy to deal w/

I had a thought a wee while ago about the first 2 7"es (Uranaus and The rude gesture...). As far as I'm aware, these are still in print after coming out in 1993. I, and a couple of friends of mind, haven't been able to think of any other 7"es that are still in print and which have been available for longer.

The Mule split was in print for ages, maybe it isn't now. The others are long gone. Should point out that hearing their cover of AC/DC's Jailbreak (on a Skingraft 7") is a fine experience

The 7" with Billiard Player Song is definitely essential. They played that when I saw them at the Scala last year.

I think the split with Mule is still in print, at least I bought it new for about $3 a few months ago, I think at Amoeba LA or Fingerprints in Long Beach.
