Jahcoozi - "Pure Breed Mongrel"

Can't believe there's been no mention of this, although that's probably because it only just came out. Anyway. It bears a certain similarity to a well known and discussed by ILM artist.

I personally find the vocals (and the whole band setup) a lot more 'convincing' somehow, although I'm not sure if the tunes are as strong as M.I.A. that other act. They might have something over M.*.*. in depth, subtly and coherence though. I'll leave it to ILM to judge.

and only vaguely related... a blog I stumbled across in the process http://www.terrible.org/mt-web/sickgirls/

Am I really so completely jaded about the UK that I automatically think a grime night in Berlin would probably be 1000% times more fun & adventurous than one in it's 'native' country?

fandango (fandango), Monday, 3 October 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

I really like what I've heard. They played up the road from me in the spring and I went to something else that night instead, which was a shame. I'm glad they signed to Kitty-Yo cos it's the sort of thing that needs to be jumped on

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 3 October 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

bump!

I really should have mentioned MIA in the thread title. Guaranteed 1000% more page views.

Maybe I should append "M.I.A." to all my sad & ignored posts from now on. :/

fandango (fandango), Monday, 3 October 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

I totally am into that Jahcoozi disc as well. It is quite unique even though it hints at things at the moment. I really hope that is does well, it would be nice if it was tuned into a bit more.

I also have heard this rather interesting disc by Quio. She does this sort of insane music that is based in hip hop and it is pretty banging. It kind of makes me think of that Kate Wax woman on Mental Groove at some points. AGF is on a few tracks. You should check that out as well.

Primeau, Monday, 3 October 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

ahaha. I started a couple of threads about AGF already. I think she's rad, although I may wait for her next proper album rather than some of the side-project stuff which (so far) sounds a bit thin.

Antye Greie & related projects thread (just linking this here because it's not indexed properly by the ILM search so far, a recent problem I think).

Quio is quite individual yes! I didn't think it was out yet. I'll check.

Jahcoozi have some connections to Modeselektor (remixes) which is the breadcrumb trail that led me to them.

I wasn't sure what to make of that Kate Wax stuff, I had a little listen the other day (Ellen Allien's done her a remix, though I haven't heard it yet it piqued my interest). Mental Groove are an odd 'nearly, so close' what I like label for me.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 3 October 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

Jahcoozi were gonna be collaborating with Kano some time back, did that ever happen?

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 3 October 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

Fandango: Yeah, I am not sure if Quio is out yet, I was lucky enough to get an advance.

I did not know about the link to Modeselektor with Jahcoozi... what remixes were those?? I must have missed them

I felt the same about Kate Wax when I first heard it, I was just not sure but, like the Jahcoozi and Quio it really sunk into me later on.

Primeau, Monday, 3 October 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

They remixed 'Black Barbie' for their DVD thing re-titled as "Tits Of My Origin". I think it did come out separately elsewhere though.

And of course (I forgot this) Sasha Perera (of Jahcoozi) is on the track 'Silikon' on their "Hello Mom!" album.

What is it about the Kate Wax you like especially?

I couldn't really work out what was that great about it. Maybe I'm trying to be interested too quickly/easily but there wasn't much that hooked me on a quick shallow sampling listen.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 3 October 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

I am not all that sure on the Kate Wax record. Honestly, the first time I heard it I thought it was, just there... not all that interesting. I heard it again later on and, not even connecting that it was the same disc, was thinking "I really like this." I find out that it is Kate Wax at this point and was shocked. It must be a right place/right time syndrome. I went through a phase afterwards with listening to it non-stop when I was cycling... totally addicted to it now.

I'll look for all those mixes and so on... I have heard the Modeselektor disc is pretty great... I will have to keep an eye out for it.

Primeau, Monday, 3 October 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

The more I listen to this sampler... the sadder I am I still haven't heard the Ari Up record by now yet either. I wonder how they'd compare.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 3 October 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

anyway... I always forget to look on artist websites http://www.kate-wax.com/ but some full-length Kate Wax songs are on there, having a listen now.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 3 October 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

This (Kate Wax) could certainly grow on someone!

It's like super-minimal electrohouse with sung, near-spoken vocals. REALLY minimal and low tempo, although not as swinging as something like that Matias Agayo record (or Closer Musik) perhaps. Reminds me a little bit of Laila (of "Like Weather" and Björk production fame) somehow.

I don't think all these songs are amazingly strong, but the music alone is great a lot of the time. "Pleasure Zone" is great, kinda walking on that edge of campness-but-direct fun that you find in OLD pop/dance hits (pre-acid house).

fandango (fandango), Monday, 3 October 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

Seemed like the Young MC/Tone Loc version of grime to me...

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Monday, 3 October 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

Fandango, Wow, I never thought of the comparison of Kate to Leila. I absolutely adore Leila. I really wish that she was a little more prolific. I guess she was always a bit of an acquired taste however.

Primeau, Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

this album is sick. just checked it out on the kitty-yo site. "Shake the Doom" is my favorite. Best beats. definitely. don't buy that M.I.A. comparison. it's bunk. galang - you so wrong. not so into some of the slower stuff. but, overall, big ups!

maddprofit, Wednesday, 5 October 2005 02:07 (twenty years ago)

I think I might like this, but I have silicone earplugs in my ears since I'm getting ready to go to bed. Will try later. (Seriously though.) Where are they from?

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

I haven't heard the lp proper yet, but I've pieced together a compilation of singles/sides that makes a pretty fine album of its own.

Originally, an M.I.A. comparison came to mind for me. But it disappeared pretty quickly. Sort of a drag, really, but I have no idea who or what to compare them to.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 03:07 (twenty years ago)

to rockist: i'm pretty sure jahcoozi is out of berlin. not sure of the provenance of individual bandmembers - though i think the bassist is israeli (very hot). i saw them perform once in cardiff. great live band. serious stage show action. the singer is shameless, but in that "oh no you didn't" way. from what i've heard of the album they're also pretty good canned.

filossurthighs, Wednesday, 5 October 2005 23:53 (twenty years ago)

Dang. The Cardiff show was the one I passed up

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 6 October 2005 07:59 (twenty years ago)

yep - JAHCOOZI is from berlin. sasha perera, the lead singer and one of the most amazing women on the planet anyway, is of london origin but seems to be quite happy in berlin (who isn't...). robot koch is berliner as well and is also programming for THE TAPE and since you know the kitty yo label website now you can just as well listen to THE TAPE too because they are worth it. oren, the one with the guitar or bass or whatever is from tel aviv and a radio star over there and totally cool especially when he takes off his shirt on stage.
never ever miss a JAHCOOZI performance. sasha is the shit live and if you're really really lucky she brings her stunningly beautiful sister
for some asian bride dance performance with her.

and who ever asked for the modeselektor black barbie remix:
its great and out on the 'the girls ep' on shadetek records.

and thanks for mentioning our blog www.sickgirls.de, it's true - GRIME parties in berlin are big fun and way better than in london (i did not say this, a native londoner told me, fo'real.)

and in case you need the perfect djs to go with JAHCOOZI always choose us. SICK GIRLS is our name, hello. nice to meet you.

alexandra droener (adbiz), Thursday, 6 October 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
Probably the wrong thread, but did anyone download that sick girls mix recently? It was pretty great fun but I was kinda surprised it didn't feature any grime at all! (xpost - Whiney G. Weingarten OTM... basically)

I would have thought they'd have used the opportunity to showcase some of it instead of coming over like 1000% other hipster diplo hollertronix whatever DJ's out there (not that it wasn't a really fun enthusiastic mix). Anyway... and I was being utterly pissy, negative & prejudiced upthread (first post) too. I'm not sure what I'm trying to say here.. revealing my ignorance as usual..

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 22:39 (nineteen years ago)

two years pass...

I like this.
