completism

OK so what bands/artists do you own every single known official recording of?

I thought there would be more for me, but the more I think about it the harder it is to come up with anybody. I think I have everything officially released by Syd Barrett. Then again, wasn't there some Kevin Ayers record he played on or something, and I don't have that. All of Joy Division? Almost, but then again there's some live album they featured on in the late 70s and I don't have that. Hmmm, not easy being a completist.

joy zipper (nearly - i think)
free association

I think I have all of girls at our best's records. I did have this thing for hawkwind completism in the dim & distant past, but I never managed to find a copy of the holy grail, the "hawkwind mind journey" album. I still don't know if it even really exists.

From the (also dim & distant) record store clerk days, drive yourself mad by becoming a completist for:

frank zappa
bill nelson
soft machine (or better/worse still, "canterbury")

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

Tommy Tadlock, as far as I know

Joanna Newsom

I think for a long time it was thought that Syd appeared on "Singing a Song in the Morning", which can be found on some classic Syd bootlegs. However, the song that appears on those boots is the Kevin Ayres single, actually called Religious Experiance(can't remember if it was released as Singing...) and doesn't feature Syd. The truth is in the liner notes to Kevin Ayres Joy of a Toy reissue. Syd came by, recorded a lead guitar line, then left. Then Kevin changed his mind and played guitar on top of Syd's, very much mimicking syd's style. So the final version is actually just Kevin playing like Syd. The CD features both the original Syd session and 2 or 3 later Kevin versions.

O/T storie: an acquaintance of mine owned the complete Bowie catalogue. This was mid-80's. He was also a fan of Mike 'Wombles' Batt. His flat was robbed. They took the stereo, TV, video but . . he was left STILL the owner of the complete works of Mike Batt.

Soukesian, Tuesday, 4 October 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

meat whiplash
2.3
boothby
and many other bands that only saw one single.

i would love to hear all the bart/cat's miaow stuff.

completing a label collection is more fun.

Dan Gr (certain), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Meat Whiplash - Don't Slip Up. Yes. But do you have the live tape? If I remember correctly ownership of both was required for entry into the Meat Whiplas fanclub.

everything, Tuesday, 4 October 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

never heard the live tape. have a motorcycle boy 7" though. what a piece of crap. if you -- or anyone -- has the live meat whiplash tape, i'd love a dub. i'll gladly offer a copy of something in return.

were their other songs as good as the single?

Dan Gr (certain), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

I have the Motorcycle Ride 7", but I think those songs came from a live tape as well. Damn.

I have everything by the Shop Assistants that I know of. Even that free 7" that came with Sounds with the different version of Train From Kansas City.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

But not including the Buba & the Shop Assistants 7". I'm not made of money.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

I've got the Meat Whiplash live tape - it's 5 badly recorded, almost identical 15 minute gigs recorded in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Paisley, I think, between 84-86, plus a radio session. They obviously only had 6 songs in total, plus their cover of "Now I Wanna Be Your Dog". I'd never give it up since I am a Meat Whiplash completist.

I could try computerizing it and putting it on slsk if anyone wants it?

everything, Tuesday, 4 October 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

All I need is Bobino 1981 and I've got the Magma back catalogue complete. Apart from the DVD's. And the 300 albums by offshoots / ex members / family members etc etc.

Does ANYONE own the complete Sun Ra discography?

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

I have all three Mwandishi albums.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

Yes please put Meat Whiplash tape on Slsk! or YSI!

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

I've probably got quite a few bands who've only put out a 7" or have a discography CD that covers everything.

I think I have everything by the Rosehips, cos I have the discography CD and the split flexi with the Fat Tulips.

Did Opal release anything that's not on Early Recordings or Happy Nightmare Baby?

If the Wedding Present hadn't reformed, I'd have everything by them.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

Completism, being a Completist: C/D?

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

I'll try mp3ing the Meat Whiplash then. Don't say you weren't warned about the quality though.

Do you Shop Assistants completists have the Rolling Stones tribute album with their version of "Respectable"? And then there's the 53rd & 3rd compilation with a song called "Tried To Tell You"...any others?

everything, Tuesday, 4 October 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

Ah bollocks then, I don't have those compilations. I have the Stones one on mp3 I think, but that doesn't count. I wonder if Avalanche have rereleased that 53rd & 3rd song on any of their comps?

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

Bob Dylan
Sonic Youth
The Slackers
Spacemen 3/Spiritualized
Flaming Lips

Ahhh the joy of torrents. But the real question is is it worth having all those albums?

Now why would that post twice?

buyabiznatch (buyabiznatch), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

Fuck! I just remembered there is actually another Meat Whiplash recording out there. "Losing Your Grip" on the Jello Biafra benefit album "Censorship Sucks". It's probably the best one on the album.

everything, Tuesday, 4 October 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

>Did Opal release anything that's not on Early Recordings or Happy Nightmare Baby?<

Yes, the version of The Doors' "Indian Summer" on a Chemical Imbalance 7" EP

All the bands I like are too prolific to actually get "everything". I'm usually missing one or two obscure things.

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 01:11 (twenty years ago)

i would love to hear all the bart/cat's miaow stuff.

all the CM stuff is on the two reissue cds, with the exception of a couple of songs on 'little baby sourpuss' (and the darla EP)

jimmy glass (electricsound), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 04:50 (twenty years ago)

opal also have a track on a syd barrett tribute lp. it is far and away the best thing on it

jimmy glass (electricsound), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 04:50 (twenty years ago)

neko case

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

i have maybe all the cat's miaow stuff; and a bunch of the bart and friends --- but there's just so much that you always feel there's tons you haven't heard. like that hanshalf trio 7" i just heard for the first time last year, of bart andrew withycombe and david nichols in 1991 or something like that.

Dan Gr (certain), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 07:14 (twenty years ago)

don't forget the ampersands and girl of the world

jimmy glass (electricsound), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 07:27 (twenty years ago)

also: starstreamer and anstey station

jimmy glass (electricsound), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 07:27 (twenty years ago)

who's in ampersand? i thought that was a swedish thing.

Dan Gr (certain), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 07:28 (twenty years ago)

no, the ampersands. andrew was their bass dude

jimmy glass (electricsound), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 07:32 (twenty years ago)

same one from fantastic records?

Dan Gr (certain), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 07:33 (twenty years ago)

nevermind. just checked the fantastic records site, ampersand (sans the "the", who i was thinking of) are from san francisco and not the same as the ampersands, it seems.

Dan Gr (certain), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 07:36 (twenty years ago)

I own every official (& a few UN-official) MX-80 Sound. Or so I THOUGHT, until last night, when I discovered the existence of a track from '99 called "Surfin' Pope". (And their latest LP may or may not have been released already.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

I've got pretty much everything Kevin Ayers appeared on from 1967 to 1983, including collaborations. The only exception which comes to mind is "After The Show", a single from 1974.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

Further to all the comments earlier, there's also the cover of Elizabeth Cotten's "Freight Train" that's only on the UK 12" of "Fell From the Sun". From memory.

Did they ever release "Rocket Machine" as a single? Someone told me they did, but I can't find any reference to it at all. Anywhere.

jon dale, Wednesday, 5 October 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

hmm, better track that down. there's apparently another (unofficial) opal collection out there.. i'd love to hear it

Christopher Costello (CGC), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

a discography CD that covers everything.

that's cheating!

Bob Dylan
Sonic Youth
The Slackers
Spacemen 3/Spiritualized
Flaming Lips

Ahhh the joy of torrents. But the real question is is it worth having all those albums?

the notion of downloading a torrent being equal to owning every recording aside, how the fuck did you manage to download RRR-500? have you got it spread across 500 infinite hard drives, or just one?

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 6 October 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)

Bob Dylan

I find it difficult to believe that anyone apart from a totally anal fanatic could have absolutely every official release that Dylan has ever sang or played on.

jz, Thursday, 6 October 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

wait wait wait.... we've gotten way off the original bit here, haven't we?

the original question was "OK so what bands/artists do you own every single known official recording of?"

not passing judegement on downloading, but having all the mp3s is not the same as owning all their official releases.

i also took the statement to mean owning all the releases, not just having all the songs. like having all their original releases vs having talulah gosh's backwash or charles bronson's discocrappy.

buying the complete records of ... hardly seems like completism to me. and downloading every mp3 just seems sad.

Dan Gr (certain), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

I guess the closest I can get to that is Lush - I have all their CD releases, but that doesn't cover compilation appearances and the tracks on vinyl that didn't get to CD - there were definitely some songs on 7"s from Lovelife that weren't on the CD singles.

Oh crap, and I've cheated by having Gala instead of the 1st 3 EP's individually. I do have Scar though, so I'm only missing Mad Love & Sweetness & Light.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 6 October 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

I have every World Domination Enterprises official recording.
I have both "The 012" records (one album, one track on a compilation single)
I have a CDR with all their tape/zine appearances.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 6 October 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

.. but if anyone has their stuff so nearly issued on One Little Indian, or around then before they split, I .....

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 6 October 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

I think it is less sad to download everything than to traipse around trying to buy it.

Well, I don't, but I wish I did.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 6 October 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

I have everything the 60ft Dolls put out just because all their stuff kept turning up in bargain bins. And I nearly have everything by the Super Furry Animals - these days I'm not so much of a completist, that remix album didn't interest me, I haven't been able to find their last two singles and I can't be arsed to pay top dollar for them on ebay.

Louie_Strychnine, Thursday, 6 October 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

I bet you don't have the promo of the second album, on Indolent.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 6 October 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

how is the 012 stuff? i only know fish from tahiti from the weird sampler, which i picked up when dave from anthrax for the people was briefly selling off his old cassettes. and that song is great.

what happens to those cassettes? i figure they just disappear 'cause people aren't so into selling them on ebay or elsewhere as vinyl.

Dan Gr (certain), Thursday, 6 October 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

I've got the reissue of the Dolls' Joya Magica. I notice that my local record shop has got the promo - they started off selling it at 6.90, I think it's been marked down to 3.90 now! I might consider getting it when it's 10p!

Louie_Strychnine, Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

opal early recordings 2!!!! i knew there were more tracks out there, but had no idea that they had leaked out - after a quick google i found this guy who has 30 second samples of each track - how frustrating....ARGHHHH!

zappi (joni), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

WOW, I had no idea about all that additional Opal stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!

I own everything by My Bloody Valentine that includes Bilinda.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

Dan Gr, the stuff is very umm, unhinged. They got hinges later, then got better, then became World Dom.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

i've got the world domination cassette of their "let's play..." album. haven't listened to it since i've been too lazy to buy new batteries for my cassette player. been so long that i forgot why i bought it in the first place; i guess it was because of the 012 link. i'll be sure to buy batteries now.

just realized i've been fairly completist about the clientele. after seeing them in an nyu student hall (or some such building) basement in i guess '99 or '00, i've made sure to buy each single as it comes out. i think i'm only missing a live single and the compilation appearances (which i don't think are ever exclusive, anyway). i sometimes feel guilty for owning the march records 10", since they never got paid for it, and skippy march is a dick. seen them at least once live since then, but it's never been as good as seeing them play in that basement with the trial projected behind them.
